Charming Cottage With Riverside Garden

Updated: 31-Oct-2016
Country Cottage in Lustleigh, Nr. Newton Abbot, Devon - Quiet Location Between Dartmoor And The Sea

Originally believed to have been a refuge and overnight halt for cattlemen bringing their herds off the moor on their way to market, Ivy Cottage lies between Packsaddle bridge over the Wrey Brook and Drakeford Bridge over the River Bovey. Ivy Cottage is built of stone and cob and has been considerably upgraded over the years! In the main living room we installed a wood-burning stove a few years ago. This is a great success, warms up very quickly and gives off a terrific heat. Other heating is by newly-installed wall-mounted electric radiators. The well-tended quiet garden is a real suntrap. The cottage is just outside Lustleigh village (with pub!), a 5 minute drive or 20 minute walk. Dartmoor is readily accessible, either walking, or by car to Widecombe and Princeton. The sea is about half an hour away. There are so many different places to go!

About the Owner

My family originated in Devon (Beare is a common local surname) and the cottage has been in our family since the 1920's. We mainly keep the cottage for family use - we are spread around the country now - but let it out for short lets. I am a professional in financial services working in London. Our eldest son Jamie, was married in Lustleigh church in September 2010, so the close family connection with the village has not been lost!

Guestbook comments from the owner

We'd just like to say thank you for sharing your gorgeous little cottage with us! It was perfect! I couldn't imagine a nicer place to stay for our holiday, we even had a visiting badger and a buzzard come to see us!

Its location is great, and perfect for what we wanted - the piece & quiet of the devonshire countryside but with the fun of the seaside only 30mins away!

We had a lovely walk into lustleigh & enjoyed a really nice meal at the Cleave Pub, and we took a walk round the local woodland walk too, aswell as going on the Paignton Steam train, Goodrington sands for crabbing & sandcastle building, Dawlish for cream teas, Becky Falls....and loads more, not forgetting the beautiful moors with the wild ponies!

I would be more than happy to recommend Ivy Cottage to friends and family (although I really want to keep it for myself). Mrs M. October 2012

Lovely New Years break

  • 4 of 5

We had a three night break over the New Year period. The cottage is in a stunning location with the river literally running past it. Despite the extremely wet weather we had a really peaceful break. We even managed wine in the garden one afternoon, it really does get the best of the sunshine. We would love to return when its drier! The local people are very friendly and there are so many walks from the doorstep. The only slight criticism, due to its riverside location and the exceptional rainfall we had, was that there are signs of a lot of damp on the walls. However This did not affect the quality of the stay and the cottage was really warm and toasty and did not feel damp at all. The owner was very helpful and easy to deal with. This cottage really feels like a well loved family home. It does need a few champagne glasses!

Food for the soul

Beautiful location, very comfortable, simple, unspoilt cottage with everything you need, slept like a log, walked in the woods across the road onto the moor, explored the whole area. The garden is a dream, cannot wait to go back.

An unrivalled peaceful setting combined with a comfortable cottage makes Ivy Cottage an absolute winner for any family looking for a chance to get close to nature. The cottage is always clean and has everything you need and accommodated 6 of us with ease. I firmly recommend a stay here if you are seeking the opportunity to truly unwind and appreciate the natural Beaty of it's surroundings. Top marks again from family Richardson.

We have been going here regularly for a number of years now and already looking forward to our next visit. The cottage is unspoilt and wonderfully secluded. A great place to just relax and a great centre if you want to go on excursions. We have dogs and they adore the place, great places to walk along the river and, weather permitting, a great place to sit out of an evening and take in the peace and quiet.

The location was great. However, we were very disappointed with the cleanliness and overall decor of the cottage. The downstairs bedroom smelt very damp and was unusable. The outside loo was filthy. The fire had not been cleaned out and the cooker was covered in grease. There was broken lampshades and furniture. The wall in the kitchen was damp which was clearly visible. We appreciate that the cottage is old but feel it definitely needs a thorough clean and decoration before it is let out for a holiday . Also it would have been useful to know how narrow the entrance was as it was difficult to maneouvre in and out.

Owner's Response: The cottage is old and has imperfections, and each year we work hard to address the problems of age. As a family we love it for all its querkiness and charm. The cottage does not suit everyone and we are very disappointed when the cottage does not meet the expectations of holiday makers. For all that, many of our visitors think that it has great charm and we have many repeat bookings each year. We will of course be addressing the specific issues raised here.

From the Owner

Dartmoor has a special feel to it. The higher moors are wild and can be bleak during winter. There are lots of steep valleys with their own microclimates with pretty churches, old bridges, pubs and quietness. The situation of Ivy Cottage is arcadian, a rural idyll. If you are thinking of writing a book, this is the place to make a start!
