Elegant Gascony Villa heated pool in secluded gardens~Ideal Family holiday~

Updated: 10-Oct-2016
Stylish Villa , set in Glorious Gascon Countryside with Fabulous Panoramic Views

is classed as "maison de Maitre" -literally "the Masters house". It was built more than two centuries ago, as a replacement for the original Chateau.de Miramont. Over the years it has been upgraded and modernised without ever losing its character or charm. Sitting atop a small hill and dominating its surrounds it continues to remain a landmark site.

The whole estate is at the same time secluded and yet very much part of the village. Its vantage point offers awesome panoramic views from every aspect - from here you can see the Pyrenees mountains, the Madiran hills and the Bearn countryside.

With over 300 sq.m. of living space it has generously proportioned rooms and lovely high ceilings. Its massive outer stone walls means it enjoys a delightful ambient temperature at all times . You can enjoy the very best of a Gascony summer without the need for artificial air conditioning.

On entering the imposing reception hall, with its genuine regency furnishings, you will immediately experience a sense of well being - . a feeling that you are truly home. The quality of furnishing, carpeting and decoration continues throughout every room and grand hallways.

This quality spills over to the garden where you'll find marble and teak tables together with an array of modern loungers arranged amongst the park-like gardens of terraces, mature trees, fruit trees, rose beds and your own "potager"

A characterful house, with wonderful pool and gardens

  • 4 of 5

6 adults and 2 teenagers enjoyed a fortnight's holiday at Le Presbytere.

The house is spacious and easily accommodated us all. We particularly loved the pool, which was appetising and refreshing, and very much needed when the sun was at its hottest.

We loved the village of Miramont-Sensacq, with regular visits to the boulangerie in the mornings. A particular highlight was the evening spent by the lake, at the night-time market, sampling local food and drink, and soaking up the friendly atmosphere.

Susan was most helpful, answering our many queries in the run up to the holiday and assisting with our preparations, and provided very efficient and prompt service.

We made the most of a few cloudy days exploring the local area a bit further, walking a section of the Pilgrims route to Pimbo; we visited several vineyards, notably the Domaine de Maouries and the co-operative Tursan.

We rendezvoused with family near Biarritz and experienced the challenging rollers of the Atlantic.

We ate and drank, explored and relaxed and have returned home with many happy memories of a beautiful part of France.

Another enjoyable stay

  • 5 of 5

This was our second stay at the presbytery, the last time being in 2013. It is still as good as we remembered. The pool was a real plus this time as it was 35C when we arrived and stayed that way for a couple of days before cooling off into the low 20s.

Miramont-Sensaqc is very well placed to explore Aquitaine. Furthermore a couple of hours driving had us in Spain, this time in San Sebastian which is a lovely old town built around its own natural harbour with a 2km long beach of the finest sand, a coastal walk and an old funicular at one end. Great tapas too.

The nearby (20km) village of Lasserade has an outlet for the Plaimont producers of Saint Mont wines and is well worth a visit.

Clos Nicholas in nearby Eugenie les Baines, although mainly a hotel for those looking to slim a bit, also has a great restaurant available to non-guests.

Around Miramont-Sensacq itself, there's a lovely boulangerie a hundred metres away and a good supermarket in nearby Garlin.

Susan McCarthy provided excellent customer service.

Great stay at Le Presbytere

  • 4 of 5

Le Presbytere immediately drew our attention on Owners Direct website, as it seemed to be at first sight a quite unusual place for a holiday stay… As a matter of curiosity, we tried as much as possible to figure out how it would be once on the spot but the result was way above all our expectations !

This house is not only spacious, well-equipped and comfortable : it is full of character and its history gives it a sense of being alive and you enjoy each moment you spend there, offering an easy switch onto "holiday” mode and allowing you to feel the real warmth that emanates from the house and its peaceful surroundings.

We had a wonderful time there and really appreciated that the owner (Susan) got in touch with us to see if everything was alright, this is quite unusual nowadays and makes you really feel at home. Susan’s house book provides you with all the details about the house and the area so you just have to relax and enjoy your stay.

Charming village, friendly inhabitants, house, garden and pool well maintained, vegetable garden at your disposal, all facilities within a few minutes’ ride or just a few meters’ walk (bakery), a top place to stay in South West France, really.

Sun in Splendour!

  • 4 of 5

Two 40-something adults and two children aged 7 and 10 seek holiday home for relatively chilled fortnight. Must contain pool, comfort, character and something to do if the weather worsens.

That was the basic requirement for our holiday at Le Presbytere and it certainly didn't disappoint!

Our two children are water babes and the pool was perfect; bigger than the normal private pool and deep enough for diving. I suspect that the kids spent 75% of daylight hours in the pool, which meant we had just enough time to relax in the sun before being pulled in for our next swim, or inflatable-related pool game! The grounds are nicely secluded and felt safe for the kids to wander at leisure.

The house itself is fantastic and unlike any we have stayed in before. You can physically feel the history in the rooms and it makes a very peaceful setting. The rooms are huge and the house could easily accommodate two families without feeling cramped. Indeed, we went for 24 hours before we even found the third bathroom!

The décor in the house is eclectic and care would be needed with younger children, as there is a proliferation of delicate ornaments and furniture (take the ball outside kids!). On one of the rare days of bad weather, we set our kids the task of counting all of the chairs and paintings in the house. Prepare to be staggered if you count them yourselves ;-)

We made good use of the boulangerie, which is a two minute stroll away and sells fantastic croissant (hence the need for all the swimming). The local supermarket though is a ten minute drive and there is no nightlife nearby, which was fine by us but may trouble others.

We did manage to drag the kids out of the pool long enough to visit the Betharram Grottos and Pau, which were both well worth a trip. The Chateau de Pau is interesting for adults, but the guided tour proved to be a little long for our kids.

The only other word of warning we can think of is the steps down from the back of the house and then on down to the pool area. This means that it may not be suitable for very young children or older visitors and non-swimmers need careful supervision, as the pool is 50 yards or so from the house.

Everything considered though, we loved our holiday at Le Presbytere; it was perfect for us and we would happily return some day. The owner, Susan, made sure that we had everything we needed and was very efficient in all of our dealings with her.

Go enjoy it; you won't find anywhere else quite like it!

Great base in SW France

  • 5 of 5

We very much enjoyed our fortnight at Le Presbytere. It's a well equipped and delightfully furnished property which made for a most comfortable holiday base. The grounds are private, well maintained and spacious, and the swimming pool came into its own when temperatures were in the low 30s. We particularly enjoyed opportunities to ?raid? the kitchen garden. The owners have put a lot of thought into their reference notes for guests.

There?s an excellent 7 day-a-week boulangerie within 200 metres and a medium-sized Intermarch? in Garlin about five kilometres away.

Miramont-Sensacq is set in a beautiful part of a lovely country and we made the most of the chances to jog and drive in its rural environment. Yet the house is only 30 minutes away from Pau and close to a range of small towns, each with its own character. Viewable from the house, stretching across the southern horizon, the Pyrenees can be reached in an hour or so. We especially enjoyed - and highly recommend - the ?petit train? of Artouste in the Oassau Valley; accessed by cable car it runs spectacularly along the side of a mountain range at 6000 feet above sea level. The house also provided us with an opportunity for a two-day drive into Spain where we visited Pamplona and Jaca, just over the mountains.

All up we couldn?t have asked for a better place to stay in South West France.

Le Prebytere

  • 4 of 5

What a beautiful house, quite grand in appearance but with a homely feel. Well equipped and comfortably furnished, a real taste of France. The garden and pool were beautiful and well maintained, very peaceful. The owner went out of her way to get in touch before and during our stay to see if we had any queries which made us feel very welcome. We really enjoyed our stay.

The Atlantic coast, with several beaches to choose from, is about 50miles away - reputedly boasting the finest surfing in Europe. A little further afield you will find the Basque country - with its great cities of Bayonne, Biarritz and St. Jean de Luz. A different world, a different language - then up into the mountains of Col d'Ibardin to find cheap wine, spirits, food and petrol (plus an excellent cheap lunch in one of its many restaurants).

The drive from the channel ports and Eurotunnel can now easily be done in a day with the new autoroute via Rouen and Le mans. Further Details:

This is Gascony, - the ‘real France’! Set in the gastronomic heartland of France and surrounded by quiet unspoiled countryside of enchanting rolling hills, and soft gentle colours; if you want a relaxed holiday in beautiful surroundings where the kids can wander free and discover nature - you've just found it!

The Gascons are renowned for the warmth and effusive welcome they extend to visitors - Gascony now part of Aquitaine - is home to ‘D'Artagnan’ (he was a real person! Charles de Batz Castelmore - born in nearby Lubiac). The village was founded by Edward I of England. History is all around - churches (many dating from the 12th century), museums and fabulous roman mosaics. Even the historic pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostelo passes though the village.

Food and Drink -The Gascon passion. If you enjoy food and wine this is the place for you. Pork and beef are of the highest quality but the duck is king - along with its princely foie gras. You can buy all these at local markets, where you can also buy fresh fruit, vegetables, home produced cheeses and honey. Restaurants abound - from the small family run hostelleries offering a 4 or 5 course menu (including wine) for about 11 euros, to the 3*** Michelin restaurant at Eugenie les Bains (just 12 kms away) where the bill could be 10 times as much!

Maybe eating 'in' (especially for the children) is a more practical idea. Not a problem. Supermarkets - big and small - are within a few kilometers, and here you can choose from a mouth watering array of pre-prepared dishes ranging from wild boar through shellfish to a bewildering variety of terrines and pates. For a real shopping experience go to Pau - not only is it a fascinating town - but it has a truly magical food market. The wines here are arguably some of the best in France and certainly the cheapest -Madiran, Tursan, Jurancon (names to conjure with) and Armagnac without dissent the finest brandy in France.

  • Notes on accommodation: Le Presbytere is fully equipped in every way - elegantly furnished and appointed in great style, as befits this beautiful old mansion. It has space, it has character and yet offers comfort at every turn. If you want more than the minimalism of commercial furnishings in the modern style, this is for you . Oak and mahogany in all its glory, the best of England and the best of France at the same time. If you don't believe me see what our guests say! Outside: The house is set in an acre of gardens on a slight hill which overlooks and dominates the village. The garden is on three levels and the pool and its adjoining terrace are a virtual suntrap. The pool with easy ‘walk-in’ steps has salt water, very gentle on the skin and also very hygienic. There is underwater floodlighting for those midnight dips and a fridge in the pool house for aperitifs. The pool is heated. There are sunbeds in abundance and ample chairs and tables. The double BBQ is serious and can easily cope with the largest roast joint. The terrace off the study is effectively high above the garden and seems to nestle amongst the treetops. It has fine furnishings to match. The vegetable and herb gardens should give you the chance to sample real French produce at its freshest. Utility Room: Beyond the study is a laundry room, equipped with washing Mc.,tumble dryer and ironing gear .There is a separate cloakroom and toilet. Upstairs there are 3 other proper bathrooms each with bath/shower and WC Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels and linen are included and changed each week. The house is cleaned at the beginning of each stay or more often if required. Other: Study - a lovely corner with its extensive library and TV facilities. It has French windows which open onto an ornamental fish pool and tiled patio where, seemingly set in the treetops, you can take lunch or just luxuriate and admire the views.
