About this property

A well equipped, quiet, private and comfortable self catering Holiday Home

The house comprises a kitchen (with space to eat), a shower room with WC and a lounge and dining area, and also the three bedrooms (there is also a sofa in the lounge that converts to a double bed). In addition, the main bedroom has an ensuite bathroom, with WC.
The living area is all on the top floor - the ground floor being a 'sous sol' which is the traditional 'service' area in the houses of the region. In the past this would have been where the animals live - in our more modern house it is where the washing machine and ironing board live. Also the garden implements and small workshop and it is also a garage space. So this makes even more living space upstairs. As the house is on a slope - in the pictures it can look deceptively like a bungalow - but it is not.
We have recently added a third WC which lives downstairs in the Sous Sol

Before we confirm a booking, we like to have a conversation with any new guests; just to iron out any questions that are hovering. We are certain that most guests would also like this facility; to discuss some of those unanswered details. On VRBO, this is not easy, but can usually be done via emails. We can also be found on FB.

We ask you to NEVER to allow animals in, or on, the beds. Any evidence of this will mean deductions made for the purchase of replacement bedding/linen etc..

La Brunetiere is the perfect place for us!
My husband and I, and our three sons, first stayed in La Brunetiere in 2011. We have already been back twice, and we will be returning again this summer! We absolutely love the house, which is located in a small and quiet hamlet, and is perfect for relaxing! The house is comfortably and beautifully furnished and is always very clean. It is also very well equipped. The owners, David and Nicola, have thought of everything that you might need for your stay, including a well-stocked selection of books. The garden is also a real treat. It's spacious and secluded, and we spend a lot of our time lounging around in it! We also really like the nearby village, with its large church, shops and restaurant, all run by very welcoming local people. We have always stayed in the house during the summer, when there are lots of fetes, either in the local village or in the surrounding area, including a fantastic annual firework display at the nearby Lac-sur-Graon. We have also eaten in some excellent nearby restaurants, all within between 5 and 25 minutes drive away. My husband and I also really enjoy walking in the surrounding area. The big attraction for us is the beach at Les Conches, which is about a 25 minute drive away, and which is great for surfing. Even though lots of people go to the beach in the summer, the beach is so long, that it never seems to get really crowded! We love spending our days there, and watching the sun go down over the sea! We have also really enjoyed some great evenings in La Tranche-sur-mer, listening to live bands playing in the open-air. La Brunetiere has been a perfect place for us to stay, and we would certainly recommend it to our friends and our families.

Brunetiere
The gite was very comfortable, clean and well-equipped, and all as described in the listing. It is in a very peaceful location on the edge of the little hamlet of Brunetiere, but only a short distance from the small town of Le Champ-Sainte-Pere, which has a good supermarket. A short drive away, the old market town of Moutiers les Mauxfaits has an interesting and very old Halles (covered market), and good shops and restaurants. Just off the main D949 road to Lucon, which runs south of Moutiers, there is an extensive Lotus Garden, which is well worth a visit (there are things for children to see and do, a restaurant, etc). Lucon is also worth a visit for its cathedral, and good shops. The sea is well within reach, as are village markets - the market at Angles, on the way to La Tranche-sur-Mer - is a good one. We were only able to spend a week there, but we would recommend it as a place to relax, or as a base from which to explore beaches, local markets, small restaurants, and many other things. La Rochelle, about a hour or so away by car, is an historical city and port, with very many excellent shops and restaurants. A car is necessary!

Oasis of tranquility
We enjoyed a lovely fortnight’s holiday in your idyllic gite. It was much bigger than I anticipated and surprisingly cool with the shutters closed, considering the beautifully hot weather we enjoyed. The setting was perfect - so peaceful and pretty. Our 2 sons (in their 20's) also appreciated the complete rest and calm it afforded. I quite envy your access to such peace and tranquility. La Brunetiere was well equipped, clean and well maintained with the information advertised very accurate. David was most helpful in answering all my initial questions and in advising places to visit. I would definitely recommend this property.

Relaxing Holiday
This is a home from home in peaceful surroundings we always have time to unwind and relax. The house is very comfortable with everything you need for your holiday. The garden is quite to lounge around if not exploring the countryside. There are some lovely towns and villages to explore. The sandy beaches are a short drive of less than half an hour. We have visited several times over the last few years and have enjoyed every minute.

About the host

Hosted by David and Nicola Phizacklea

Host profile image
David and Nicky Phizacklea are resident in England - in Somerset - and we have owned our cottage in The Vendée for 19 years. We love to go as often as possible but we are happy to rent it out at reasonable rates to people who will appreciate a quiet and peaceful holiday. This way we manage to pay some of the overheads and that makes us feel less guilty about the expense of having our own hideaway in France! Nicky is a retired teacher and David is now retired from their small consultancy business.

Why they chose this property

We love the area because it is truly rural and still very French. The people are friendly and as long as we make the effort to speak their language they are happy to return the compliment though they are not all used to speaking English. The house seems to combine being away from everyone with having all the necessities (such as shops) within easy reach.

What makes this property unique

We like our holidays to be a combination of pottering in the garden, or spending the day on the beach if the weather is OK. In the Southern Vendee the weather has the reputation of having sunshine hours equivalent to the South of France. The house is easy to get to, despite being far enough South to have such wonderful summer weather. We are only 50 mins away from the airports of La Rochelle - Nantes and a little more from Poitiers. We prefer to travel by ferry - that way we can begin the holiday with an overnight cabin and a delicious meal in a Britanny Ferries restaurant. Usually we go from Portsmouth to St Malo overnight. We land at 8.30am and we are 'home' by 12.30 - in time for lunch! We can help you get a discount of 10% from Brittany Ferries. Just ask us.
