"HOLIDAY HEAVEN !!"

  • 5 of 5

The Villa is in the most beautiful setting with stunning sea views and outover the bay, and well equipped for a great holiday. Can't find enough adjectives to say how good our holiday was at Kokkino Chorio staying at Villa Marranna. Stunning sunsets each night over Souda Bay and lazy days around the pool when we weren't out exploring Crete. Local for beaches and Chania Town, but you do need a car. Mark and Jo, you have done yourselves proud !!!!!! From our first contact with you at booking to all your follow up emails we couldn't have chosen a better villa and owners to book with. Thank you a great holiday.

Delightful villa in a wonderful position

  • 5 of 5

This is an excellent two bedroomed villa in a great position. The views over Souda Bay are wonderful at most times of the day and it also provides a great spot for watching the sunset, preferably with a glass of something cool in your hand. The bedrooms are spacious, the master particularly so, and two bathrooms saves any fighting over occupation. There is a very good kitchen with ample equipment and everything has been planned out very carefully by the owners.

The pool is great, although May still proved a little challenging as the water temperatures are quite low, but heating up noticeably by the day. There is plenty of space to lounge around but also a number of country walks can be found around the property with even more after a reasonable drive.

Chania and Rethymno are both about an easy hour's drive away whilst there are a number of very good tavernas within ten minutes of the villa.

If we were to return to this area then we would certainly try to rent this again.

Stunning, but let down by several easily remedied issues.

  • 4 of 5

Stunning property, a lovely mix of traditional rustic charm and modern conveniences. The washing machine and dishwasher were a godsend. It's about 25 years since we last did self-catering abroad, when our children were little and we found that we'd taken far too many clothes, as having the washing machine meant we didn't wear half of what we took.

Tip: we took 2 small Tupperware boxes with laundry capsules and dishwasher tabs in (things like that are VERY expensive in the supermarkets, as are cleaning products we discovered).

Particularly liked the full-size fridge freezer too as we enjoyed doing a large part of our own cooking and eating in the privacy of our 'home-from-home'.

The location is truly beautiful; virtually uninterrupted views of the sea to the north elevation (except for the odd overgrown bush near the pool area) and stunning views of the White Mountains to the western elevation, which were still snow-capped when we were there!

It is peaceful, tranquil, secluded and affords a great deal of privacy - just what we were looking for - but still only 5 or 6 minutes drive to Plaka with its pretty square and selection of eateries, and only 10 to 12 minutes drive to Almyrida where the beach is sandy and the sea shallow and warm, particularly at the far eastern end where it is protected by a raised jetty/breakwater.

The decor is lovely and the layout spot-on, very practical for making the most of the pool area and the views.

However we had some issues with a dirty pool (partially resolved), excessive dust (no access to vacuum cleaner and trying to sweep up dust is a fool's game), no extra blankets for the beds (I was cold on the first night and didn't sleep) and the barbecue was very disappointing, especially for a property of this calibre. We felt the property would benefit from a more substantial/heavy duty barbecue with a closable lid to stop the wind blowing the ash into the pool. Or even a built-in one like some properties have.

All things considered though, the property is truly beautiful and we would definitely consider staying again.

Places to visit:

Kournas Lake - large pedalo boats, swimming, tavernas.

Georgiopouli harbour area - lunch at Arkadi right at end of little pier, fresh fish.

Chania - Old town and Venetian harbour, beautiful.

Scenic drives through pretty villages and towns. A car is a MUST!

Nearest sandy beach - Almyrida (highly recommend area in front of CostAnita taverna, beach service!

Owner's Response: Dear Rayma, Thank you very much for your generally positive review. We are glad you enjoyed your stay at Villa Maranna and it’s always nice to hear words such as “stunning” and “beautiful” in describing your feelings towards the villa and its surroundings. Thank you also for pointing out a few issues which need addressing. Without your comments we the owners would never know what needs rectifying. I’ll work with the property managers to fix these issues ASAP, so they do not reduce the enjoyment of future guests. Things like the over-grown bush beside the pool is something easy to solve and this can be added to the job list of the gardener who visits weekly. Whilst the BBQ was replaced for you at the beginning of your stay, which hopefully you found to be an improvement, we will consider upgrading this to a stone built fixed unit for next season. Portable BBQ’s don’t seem to fair too well if left to the elements. I understand it can get chilly at night early in the season, but you should have found sufficient blankets in addition to the other bedding and room heaters. I will ask that we get a few extra blankets in for use on those extra chilly nights. Something beyond our control at this time of the year however, is keeping the pool 100% clean. During the shoulder seasons it is nigh on impossible, as no sooner has it been cleaned does the wind blow and with it environmental sand/dirt follows. Andy who looks after the pool does a fantastic job at maintaining this but even he is only human. Same goes for the dust in the house I’m afraid, as it doesn’t take much of a through breeze for the natural sandstone walls to deposit some fine dust; this is a by-product of traditional construction. Thank you once again for your feedback and we look forward to welcoming you back should you decide to visit this area of Crete again in the future. Kind regards Mark and Jo

Great views, secluded retreat

  • 4 of 5

We had a wonderful time at the villa. Very relaxing, feels like home. We had a minor hiccup with hot water not working properly, but it was quickly sorted by the property managers. Mark and Jo were also very cooperative and prompt with contacting.

It's a little remote, but it's a nice drive to the villa, and Kalyves is a great town with a lot of good food.

Great Villa, great location with stunning views

  • 5 of 5

Villa Maranna is excellent with a great design that worked well for a family of 5. The property is very well appointed with a superb pool to match and in an area that was just perfect for what we were after which was a relaxing holiday within easy access to the best of the rest of Crete. We had no issues at all whilst at the villa and made the most of what there was on offer locally and beyond. Having explored the region the local hidden cove was real favourite of us all which made staying in the area all the better.

Thanks Mark & Jo for allowing us the opportunity to rent your place. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend e will be sure to direct others to it.

Lovely Villa With Stunning Views

  • 4 of 5

Spent 2 wonderful weeks relaxing at this villa. The views from the property are stunning, looking out over the sea to Souda Bay and across to the White Mountain's. Although there is another villa immediately next door it is still very private and luckily for us the other villa was empty the whole 2 weeks we were there. It could be classed as remote, a car is essential in our opinion. The local village of Plaka is a 6-7 minute drive away and is a lovely place with a number of taverna's to choose from. Takis Taverna comes highly recommended. Just up from the villa is St George's Retreat, again would recommend going in a car, although only 5 mins, they are not the best roads/tracks to be walking back to the villa in the dark. Fantastic food and absolutely to die for sunsets.

Almyrida resort has loads of good quality taverna's/restaurants, never a a bad meal in any and all huge portions and priced reasonably.

Chania is only 30-40 minutes away and is a lovely city with great shopping and harbour front restaurtant's.

The villa is open plan with plenty of space for eating either in or out. It was too windy for the first couple of days to eat outside on the balcony so chose to eat out. Good air-con in bedrooms and living area. Maybe the upstairs shower room is in need of an update but the shower works perfectly well. Great to have dishwasher and washing machine (took own tablets) and not come home with loads of washing and ironing to do. Plenty of everyday plates, cutlery and glasses. The welcome pack was adequate, but very surprised not to have a bottle of water just to see you through the first 24 hrs. It included bread, milk, butter, eggs and a bottle of wine. We had already stopped off at a supermarket so the lack of water was not a problem for us.

The pool area is lovely with sunbeds, brolly's, tables and chairs. We did have an issue with the pool on our 2nd week but the property manager who lives local, resolved it within a couple of day's, unfortunately we were unable to swim in it as it was just too dirty, so spent a couple of days at the beach.

As it is off the beaten track, so to speak, the gravelled driveway would look great with some solar powered lights when arriving back in the dark. No streets lights anywhere near the villa.

Would definately recommend this villa for total relaxation in a stunning location.

Owner's Response: Thank you very much for your detailed review. I’m glad you had a wonderful, relaxing stay at Villa Maranna and found most of your experience up to the high standard our guests expect. You should have found a torch at the villa, which can be taken out of the property, for use after dark. The upstairs shower room is scheduled for a fresh lick of paint later in the year but as you say it is perfectly functional; the shower hose and head were only replaced in March this year. As for the lack of bottled water upon arrival; I can only assume this was an oversight but will ensure this forms part of the welcome pack in the future

There is also a quiet cove only 5 minutes drive from the villa. This offers seclusion and picturesque surroundings, ideal for diving and snorkeling.

Further Details:

The Apokoronas region of Crete, where the villa is located, is an ideal spot for walking, bird watching and just general exploring. There are many points of interest including gorges, coves, caves, historical buildings/ruins and museums that illustrate the history of this part of the Mediterranean. Kokkino Chorio, also known as The Red Village, was used in the 1964 film Zorba the Greek. It also plays host to a cave which was used in World War II by the Nazis as an artillery spotting position. From this cave it is possible to see right over to Souda Bay. Souda Bay is home to the Navy and Airbase and we do see some fighter planes flying over the bay on practice days. You can often also see naval frigates and the occasional submarine in the bay. A great day out for the children lies about an hour's drive away at the fabulous water park. THE WEATHER IN CRETE:- APRIL: Spring time in Crete with medium temperatures and low rainfall. Crete is full of wild flowers and it is magnificent. MAY: The weather in Crete becomes warm and sunny. Rain is unlikely to occur past May 10th. The sea is calm and nature is at its best. May is considered the best month for outdoors activities. A jacket will prove useful for the night.

JUNE: Sunny and hot. Time for the beach! JULY & AUGUST: These are the months that the seasonal North winds blow. It is hard to do anything else during these months, than spend the entire day at the beach. Look for a shady place and drink plenty of water. Do not forget your hat and sunscreen. Not the best weather for people who cannot stand high temperatures (30-35 C). SEPTEMBER: Sunny, less windy and slightly cooler. Good for outdoors activities. Get a light jacket for the night, especially if you plan to visit any mountainous areas. OCTOBER: Sunny, very few windy days but some rain will fall, especially in the west part of Crete. The weather is very good for outdoor activities
