About the Owner

We are semi-retired from our consultancy in Scotland and love to spend as much time as possible in France. We are looking forward to taking even more time out there now.

We bring our family and friends together in our 'home from home', as our daughter and her husband live in France and our son and daughter-in-law love to visit there. We're already making great friends with our neighbours in the village too.

Hi Pam,

As for our stay at the Ivry- en Montagne we had a fantastic time, little tricky to find the even with your map. What a cute village! We especially enjoyed the view of the windmills on the hillside and the beautiful chateau below. The bikes were great to have available, we used them several times riding around the countryside. The highlight on one of the rides was a Roman column that we found not far from the Ivry out in the middle field surrounded by cows and yellow mustard. That was a real treat.

Regards,

Norm

Exceptional holiday cottage

  • 5 of 5

As there are few named streets in Ivry it took a few wrong turns before we found the cottage but it wasn't really difficult. First impressions from the outside were exactly as in the photographs which was a very good start. The inside was also exactly as pictured which was better still. The kitchen is easily the best equipped of any holiday rental we've had anywhere, clearly a house that is used by the owners and we lacked for nothing. More than enough plates, bowls, cutlery, pans and basics such as salt, pepper, oil, cleaning materials etc.

The bathroom was a decent size with plenty of good quality towels and hot water. The dishwasher and washing machine worked perfectly and were supplied with all necessary liquids and solids for use.

Every room and surface was clean and the whole cottage is well sized for 2 adults and 3 children.

WiFi is supplied and the speed is good although it barely works outside the living room due to the thick walls. French TV is available and kids are happy to watch cartoons in any language. There are also some DVD's and a huge selection of books plus family games monopoly-style.

The barbecue was used on 4 days and everything was in good order with all materials to start and maintain it being supplied, we of course replenished the stocks.

Ivry-en-Montagne itself holds few attractions except peace and quiet (there is a chateau a few hundred metres down the road) but short drives through some beautiful countryside get you to La Rochepot (bigger and more castle-like chateau), Beaune (Hospices de dieu), Autun (Cathedral, Ancient gates) and slightly further afield Dijon.

I recommend this cottage, the weather when we stayed was 25-30C most days and although it's cooler inside due to the walls, it's still fairly warm at night but there's no noise when sleeping with the windows open.

A delightful stay in a charming Burgundian gîte

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely stay in this well-appointed gîte, set within old farm buildings made of beautiful golden Burgundian stone. Particularly nice is the access to the area in front of the house, where our daughters enjoyed playing, the table and chairs where we could enjoy outdoor meals, and the meadow down below the terrace, where one could watch butterflies.

Ivry is a very small, quiet place, with very little going on. But it is a good position for expeditions to Beaune, and, of course, it is surrounded by excellent wine country. (The very best cave we found was a bit further south, at Cheilly-lès-Maranges - well worth a detour.) Chateauneuf, one of Les plus beaux villages de France, is nearby, and, on our way there, we stumbled across a gem of a Templar church in Echarnant.

The week flew by and we were sad to leave.

Owner's Response: Dear Emma We're so pleased that you enjoyed all the things we enjoy about our holiday home at Ivry en Montagne. We're always so relaxed that we don't want to leave. You obviously discovered the Cheilly les Maranges wine cave that we do most of our purchasing from, such friendly folk and a lovely canal side walk thrown in for good measure. Thanks for taking the time to write a review. Pam & Nick

Relaxing, comfortable, excellent cottage.

  • 5 of 5

We loved our week at Les Vignes. The house was everything one could wish for. In particular, the kitchen was really well equipped and the whole house had everything that we could need - including English plug converters! The beds were comfy, the water was hot and plentiful and the lounge was very relaxing. The wifi worked well too.

We had a very hot week and the house was cool and comfortable when the temperatures outside were in the high 30s.

We made plenty of use of the terrace. My husband spent ages watching a pair of booted eagles and a pair of kestrels as well as numerous smaller birds. He even saw an owl once, though we heard it frequently! We also liked the way that we could always find a place to relax in sun or shade, depending on how we felt.

We had a very relaxed week but enjoyed looking round the area. We loved Beaune and the centre of Nolay and also had a great trip to Autun. We would recommend Les Vignes to anyone and I wish I was still there!

Facilities

From the Owner

Located on the edge of a small village we feel part of a real community. Yet we can wander out for walks down country lanes into woodlands and villages, cycle, jump in the car to visit beautiful towns, chateaux, vineyards, pre-historic sites, the Morvan Regional Park. Even nip into beautiful, historic Beaune and Nolay to indulge ourselves at the markets or in some of the area's fantastic restaurants. We can offer some very good recommendations. If we simply want to BBQ, our terrace overlooking the chateau offers the perfect dining location and in the Spring we can listen to Nightingale song under the stars right up to midnight and beyond. Just as enjoyable are the rural morning sounds of cattle and cockerels.
