3km to Brehec's Sandy Beaches, Coastal Cliff Walks - Old Farm (Sleeps 6, 3 Bedrooms)

Overview

Property

Updated: 02-Dec-2016
Farmhouses in Plouezec, near Paimpol, Cotes d'Armor, Brittany, France - Situated on the Goëlo Coast, Brittany, 5 mins Paimpol, 3ks Brehec's sandy beaches

The two farms originate from the 18th century and were restored some years ago. Providing welcoming and comfortable accommodation from which to explore this exciting region. Both the houses have generous living space and have retained many original features. They are light and south facing with sunny gardens. The two houses are detached stone farmhouses and are in an offset position i.e. below one another and not overlooking each other having their own private gardens/entrances and BBQ areas.

Old Farm has 2 double bedrooms - one with an ensuite shower room and wc. The third bedroom is smaller and has two full length twin beds. The sloped ceiling on one side would make this more of a children's bedroom.

The Granary has two bedrooms. A double and a twin again with the typical roof slope on the outer sides. There is a nice light landing with chest seat and a good sized shower room off. The small twin bedroom has two full length single beds at each end of the longish bedroom. The eaves - see photo, would make this room more suitable for young adults or children. All beds have a bedside cupboard, bedside lamp and some with a radio with LW.All bedrooms have clothes storage and often extra draw space.

These farmhouses retain a lot of their old character and have not been made into monotonous plasterboard boxes. There are wall lights and centre lights in all the lounge and dining areas and their are spotlights over the kitchen areas. The format seems popular with guests returning here year after year. and the prices have been kept to sensible levels.

Brehec Beach and Port can be reached by foot on the footpath below the houses. This is not a public footpath but is used by a few locals and the civic society which has restored it! This 2.5k path takes around 35 mins and the first part is down a steep path to the stream with new footbridge.

It soon joins the main forestry trail in lovely deciduous forest. At Plouezec (3ks) there are Boulangeries, banks, supermarket etc , and the La Horaine restaurant! A real bonus is to have Paimpol close (5 mins) with its portside cafes and restaurants, headland walks, Latin Quarter, summer festivals, etc! So much to do and see!

This is a great base for exploring the lovely headlands of the Goelo Coast. The nearest is Pointe Minard which can be reached on foot by bike in 15/20 min or by walking the lanes. The GR34 coast path can then take you to any part of the Goelo Coast.

When booking you will receive walking sheets to make the best parts of these walks and cliff zones easily accessible. These save you time as the lanes are tricky to work out on some routes!

You will also get a Welcome set of sheets to explain how to get to the house, how to find things within the house and the best shopping areas plus the info on Brehat ferries, parking and so on.Although two weeks would still leave you loads to see and do one week with your own and our research will still prove a great holiday!

About the Owner

We have always loved coastal locations and now are fortunate enough to be enjoying these.

The nice thing about these is that one gets to know the local people and this leads to a deeper understanding of the area and its culture. However we would never claim to be locals but just more informed about these lovely areas which we can pass on to our guests.

The Celtic links are also dear to me (Chris) as my mother's family were from the Outer Hebrides. My grandfather was a proud Gaelic speaking Scot with a deep love of the Celtic tradition!

The sheer physical beauty of these western edges of Europe are hugely energising and will keep me motivated to maintain this contact as long as possible.

Just to say we returned home yesterday after spending a glorious week in Brittany…. the cottage was delightful and had everything we needed….the first time we have visited the Paimpol region and I think we will be visiting a lot in the future. There are so many beautiful coastal walks and very pretty villages

Old Farm

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at old farm - 4 adults and 3 children. The house and garden are very pretty, and though the garden is fairly small there is plenty of space to play in the tracks adjacent to the house. The house sits in a lovely position on a tiny road allowing the children to use their bikes straight from the house.

The track down hill through the woodlands that runs from next to the house is truly magical - perfect for making dens/early morning strolls.

And the location of Old Farm just a few minutes drive from Plage Bonaparte (the best beach in Brittany in my opinion) is hard to beat.

We enjoyed lazy evenings around the BBQ, and the local supermarkets and close and excellent.

Thanks to Chris for promptly sorting out a minor plumbing issue too.

Lovely peaceful location, near many fine beaches!

  • 4 of 5

This is a really lovely property which has been nicely restored and simply but well and attractively furnished. The large downstairs room has a spacious kitchen/dining area (kitchen well equipped although no dishwasher) and a comfortable lounge area with TV (including BBC/ITV/C4 etc.) and DVD player. The stairs which go up to the bedrooms are quite steep and occasionally uneven and not recommended for people with knee / mobility problems. Upstairs in the attic bedrooms (sloping ceilings) there are very nicely furnished double and twin bedrooms which both have plenty of storage space for clothes - all beds are very comfortable. The bedrooms are separated by a large landing area which has lovely natural light and is ideal for playing board games / racing toy cars etc. (mind the stairs!). The bathroom is a good size with an excellent cabin shower. The only loo in the house is inside the bathroom. Outside is a small gravelled seating area and a small grassy area with a (very useful!) drying line. There is room outside for gentler outdoor games but not enough space for eg. football. The house is on a very quiet road which runs through the hamlet - it feels very remote but is actually only a couple of hundred meters away from the main Plouha - Plouézec road, which gets you quickly to the nearby towns / shops and many fantastic beaches!! The house and garden are not overlooked by anyone. This is a lovely property and I can definitely imagine returning here.

Comfortable cottage in idylllic countryside

  • 5 of 5

We arrived at the Old Farm to find everything spotlessly clean and ready for use. Downstairs the cottage has a spacious kitchen\dining room with French doors onto the garden. and leading onto a comfortable sitting room.Outside we found a pretty garden with table and chairs and the all important barbeque equipment. Upstairs the bedrooms are well fitted out with plenty of storage space and comfortable beds. Both bathrooms had efficient showers with plenty of hot water. Chris provided useful instructions for use of the washing machine etc as well as information on places to visit, restaurants and coastal walks. We thoroughly enjoyed exploring the lovely sandy beaches nearby, and further afield Le Roche Jagu is a castle/chateau well worth a visit. We also enjoyed Paimpol with its Wednesday market and harbourside cafes. A great place for seafood. Thank you Chris for providing us with the ideal holiday home from home.

Comfortable cottage in tranquil countryside

  • 4 of 5

We found the Old Farm easily with the instructions given and located in a pretty, quiet hamlet. We weren't disappointed; the cottage was clean comfortable, spacious and well equipped with useful information on places to visit, local restaurants and stunning walks. There are good supermarkets a few minutes drive away. The sandy beaches nearby are ideal for families and with plenty of rock pools to explore. We loved Brehec beach and the local brasserie Chez Tonton offered a good lunch menu. Wednesday

market in Paimpol is well worth a visit, as are the numerous cafes fronting the harbour.

All in all, the Old Farm was the perfect choice for a most enjoying holiday.

Peaceful location, but with lots to do and see.

  • 5 of 5

The directions about getting to the cottage were straight forward and easy to follow, and the information sheets we received from the owner on booking, were really useful. This was our second visit to these properties, having enjoyed our stay at the Granary last year.

The weather was perfect, so we were able to make good use of the walk suggestions (very accurate) and they led us to some interesting sites we would not have found. One walk was from Pointe de Plouezec to Pointe de Minard. What fantastic views, and what we missed one way we were able to see on the way back! Day trips included Cap Frehal and Fort la Latte, as well as south to Pontrieux on the train. The walk through the forest from the cottage to the beach, is always interesting, with the first section in particular, a nature paradise for young (and old) children.

Old Farm is a spacious, well equipped and comfortable cottage, fitting in well with the rural unspoilt surroundings. It is light and airy and has a relaxing atmosphere. On arrival it was very clean and we found everything we needed in terms of equipment, comfortable furniture and outside space. The BBQ was frequently used during our stay. Shops are a few minutes drive away.

We are looking forward to visiting again in 2015. We would recommend Old Farm to anyone wanting a quiet location but with lots to do.

Location

From the Owner

Brehec (3kms)and the Goëlo coastline has always been one of my favourite places. It has everything that one wants close at hand :small towns such as Plouzec(3kms) with tempting boulangeries and all local services;bustling ports like Paimpol (8 mins) with medieval centres and cafe life overlooking the yacht basin; empty golden beaches and coves 5- 15 mins ; small ports and lively restaurants - St Quay and Binic -all linked by the magical GR34 cliff footpath! So when I saw the Old Farm and Granary in 2001 in need of TLC I knew it had to be a good idea. The local villagers, (always a friendly "bonjour!", were delighted to have the houses renovated! Being in a small hamlet without being on a through road is peaceful. There is even a footpath down to Brehec Beach now totally refurbished!

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : Brest at 145 Kilometres Nearest Barpub : Plouezec at 3 Kilometres Nearest Ferry : Roscoff at 100 Kilometres Nearest Golf : Lanvollon at 16 Kilometres Nearest Train : Paimpol at 10 Kilometres Nearest Motorway : St Brieuc 4 lanes at 35 Kilometres Nearest Restaurant : Plouezec at 3 Kilometres Nearest Beach : Brehec Plage by road 2.5ks by path at 5 Kilometres Car: recommended

The jewel in the local crown is probably Paimpol because of its lively port from with lots of cafes and restaurants to people gaze! Plus its immediate access to headland walks. Plus the cobbled streets behind the port full of independent boutiques, cafes, bars etc.

Then there is the must visit to the nearby Iles de Brehat by fast launches from the Pointe de l'Arcouest. The view of this island archipelago -literally hundreds of islets and larger isles is awesome. Ferries are about £10 return and the village at the port of entry has bakeries and a foodstore etc. On the island there is the walk over to the Paon Lighthouse on the Granit Rose outcrop and there is no traffic. Bikes can be hired at the port for reasonable rates.

Local Beach and coast Haunts 5/15 minutes drive or 35 mins walk direct from the house through coastal forest!

Brehec Beach 5 mins car or is 2.5ks via forest trail - 35 mins walk. First part, after leaving cottages, is down the valley path to the stream which now has a new bridge and a completely refurbished path soon joining the wide forestry trail in deep deciduous forest. The height of the trees reminds me of the Amazon tree canopies! Pure nature! This is not to say that there are no thorns or steep bits on the first 500 metres.

Within 10 mins drive are the unspoilt beaches of Plage Bonaparte where the local resistance rescued scores of shot down British airmen got them onto naval gunboats under the eye of the Germans and then got them underway to Dartmouth in Devon. This extraordinary venture is recorded on plaques and at a large Cliff memorial. Le Palus is the beach for Plouha and is a bit tricky to find but worth the effort.Therte are two restaurants here

One of my favourite must do short walks along the coast path is between St Quay and Portrieux now bundled together as St Quay Portrieux, Arrive at the Casino in St Quay park up and walk along the coast to Portrieux. At the modern port there is the Bar Victoria with great lunchtime deals! Plus a glorious beach or two.

Then there is lovely Binic with its hidden beach by the lock gates an pretty town.

Just a few of our favourite haunts! All within 15/20 mins of the house.

The nearest ports are Roscoff from Plymouth and St Malo from Portsmouth - details on owners site.It takes about 90 mins driving from these ports.

Best airports are Brest,Dinard and Rennes. One can rent cars from these and a car is necessary to explore.

Distances:

The nearest town/village with all facilities needed is Plouezec 3ks(2 miles). Paimpol a much larger town and port is only 8ks away.

The port and sandy beaches of Brehec are 2.5/5ks by foot/car.

The Iles de Brehat - a must visit - are just 6ks from Paimpol

Pontrieux a delightful inland port is only 12ks and the magnificent La Roche Jagu Chateau is just 2ks further! Catch the steam train from Paimpol to Pontrieux June - Sept.

Pink Granite Coast just 40 mins.Worth the journey.Volcanic wonderland

Further Details:

Sporty? Here one can follow most sports and leisure interests. There is indoor tennis year at Plouezec, horse riding 3 ks, fishing and of course sea bathing! The local baths at Paimpol have chutes, sauna and the other sorts of activity. Good 18 hole golf course at Binic, a 15/20 mins drive. The local Brehec beach has a sea school for sea sports and at Pontrieux is a school for canoe and kayak. Both Brehec and Pontrieux have safe launching areas for boats/canoes/kayaks. Plouezec 3 kms has banks with 24 hr cash withdrawals, boulangeries, supermarket, hairdresser, post office, tourist office open most days, garage and restaurant (La Horaine). There is a small shop open all week and in summer the Intermarche supermarket opens to 12.15 pm on a Sunday. Nearest diesel/petrol is at Plouezec and nearest supermarket petrol etc is at Plouha (8mins). Plouezec's local market is on a Saturday morning though the lady who sells her husband's fish caught the night before, is outside the supermarket most mornings - be early ie 9ish.Nearby Plouha has a great market on Wednesday mornings. Paimpol's market is on Tues am. Most markets are am only! Restaurants, 2 good ones in Brehec - Chez Tonton and La Salicorne. The La Horaine at Plouezec (2.5 kms).

Nearby Plouha has : Carrefour supermarket open Sun am; small shops and a superb Wed market (am). Palus - its seaside is 1.5ks -2 good restaurants.

Paimpol is open all year with many restaurants around the port - choose carefully to get the best value! A real treat at modest prices is La Sterne on the port at Pontrieux 13 euros - 3 courses inc wine. Treat yourself at the La Roche Jagu Chateau for 13 euros(2 courses) nr Pontrieux. (midday only). Paimpol 8 mins drive is a major attraction for visitors as it has a variety of leisure activities sailing school at Loguivy 5 mins from Paimpol, indoor and outdoor tennis courts, large swimming pool. Facilities

From the Owner

These two farms have been fully renovated but still have lots of character and the grounds between them have been landscaped and hedged offering a good level of privacy. Both have private entrances and a common parking area. The Granary has no road frontage but has an entrance from the lane/footpath. It also has a loading entrance gate from the parking area. The gardens are in sun all day so just come and relax! Being on a large loop road off the coastal road means that there is no through traffic - only about 5 cars a day of the neighbours and postman! The houses rear gardens blend in with the coastal forest below whilst remaining in full sun all day. Thus there is the tranquility of a rural setting yet only minutes are lovely ports, restaurants, beaches and coast paths!

Notes:

  • Notes on accommodation: CH can be ordered for Old Farm but there are electric heaters. Details are on owners site re free allowances etc. The two log burners can give out a good heat. Though we do try to leave off cuts for off season tenants, wood can be purchased in supermarkets locally. The houses are good for children as the gardens are private and gated and lead onto a quiet lane with no more than a half dozen cars passing daily. It is in fact a no through road. Old Farm has the option of the French windows/doors being the main door as the terrace has a gate to the little road and parking area. The Granary has a gate entrance from the footpath at the back of it. Both properties have microwaves, electric kettles, coffee makers, toasters and etc! Only Old Farm has a dishwasher though extra facilities are always under review. Outside: Both have private gardens and entrance paths.Opposite the rear of Old Farm is its creche - useful for bike storage but also serves as the laundry room. The Granary has also got an outdoors storage area as can be seen in photos. This now benefits from a lockable door! Both have BBQs and ample garden furniture. Old Farm has new hardwood garden furniture( resourced from renewable sources!).
