Converted Barn in Anduze, Gard, Languedoc - Roussillon, France - Set Amongst Vines and Olive Trees

This beautifully converted stone barn is set on a rolling plain just south of the Cevennes hills. It has been furnished with a mixture of antique and new furniture. The barn has a huge open plan living area and a very large and well equipped kitchen. There is also a separate sitting/sun room with comfortable sofas. The whole house is equipped with air conditioning which makes summer living much more comfortable. The three bedrooms all have their own en suite bathrooms and there is also a wc and basin downstairs.

Outside there is a roofed terrace situated perfectly for watching the summer skies and for sitting reading, even on stormy nights. The gravelled courtyard is partly shaded by a tall almond tree and has pots of geraniums and dipladenia giving colour all summer long. The garden includes a small orchard and a large open grassy area for playing badminton, football or table tennis. The gated car park has room for at least two vehicles.

The large pool (12x6m) is surrounded by lavender and rosemary bushes and is fully fenced in accordance with French regulations. There is a large shaded area to lounge in.

About the Owner

Etienne and I moved to France in 2001 having acquired the property a few years previously. Etienne came from Paris and I was an army child who had lived all over the world. We lived together in Clapham in London for 25 years, bringing up 4 children and decided to make a real change whilst our youngest son could go into the primary system in France. Etienne had worked in the wine and spirits industry and I was a primary teacher then literacy specialist.

We now live the country life with dogs, a cat, chickens and a large vegetable garden. We have lovely neighbours and regularly help with the grape harvest or are called on to help round up cows. Very different to Clapham. We can always be called on for advice and Etienne is always happy to arrange wine tasting in local caves.

We have had a lovely relaxing week in this fantastic barn equipped with everything you could need, especially for the children, and so well looked after.

The children loved the tractor rides and the animals. Lots to see and do.

Gorgeous property in a gorgeous area

Our party of 6 adults and a toddler had a fantastic weeks stay at the barn. It is a beautiful property with everything you could need for a fab holiday, including lots of toys and provisions for our youngest member.

Joanna and Etienne were on hand throughout our stay to provide us tips for things to do and eggs, fresh herbs and bikes during the stay.

The pool is lovely and relaxing overlooking some gorgeous countryside and so peaceful and quiet. The house is quite a haven for bird watchers too!

We enjoyed trips to Nimes, the beach, the bambooserie and the steam train up St Jean du gard, all very much recommended!! Lovely times had splashing in the nearby rivers and bbqs at the house too.

Thanks once again for having us to stay at your lovely barn and we hope to come back soon!

Like a home from home

Being the sort of people who once they find a good thing, stick with it, this has become our regular family holiday destination.

Firstly, the particulars and descriptions of the property are all accurate. It is a lovely spacious barn conversion in a quiet and pleasant situation.

It has a large and well equipped kitchen, a rather grand dining table(not shown) that can comfortably sit 10 or more, (and I mean comfortably- very nice chairs!)

In spite of being vast, the main living room has a very comfortable ambience, with very effective aircon.

The pool is great with plenty of space around to relax, and lots of shade if you need it.

Jo and Etienne, your hosts, could not be more friendly and helpful, and are sure to make you feel very welcome. They are both fully bilingual.

The area around the property is quiet, and mostly taken up by vineyards.

Some of our favourite local activities-

The spectacular steam train from going Anduze up into the Cevennes.

Some lovely canoeing, and swimming in the nearby rivers.

Maries' Amazing fruit and vegetable stall just down the road.

The local Wine Cave has a weekly lunchtime open air oyster and seafood knees up complete with local bands.

Anduze is a lovely busy little town with a vast weekly market, and lots of cheap and cheerful cafes.

All in all, a lovely relaxing place to be, certainly we don't seem to be able to keep away.

Location

We had great friends who had moved to Nimes and we spent several holidays in the area so when we decided to move to France it was an obvious choice. It is a wonderful region - it is rural but you can be in Nimes in less than an hour. We live on a plain but you can be up in the Cevennes mountains in half an hour and there's a ski station one and a half hours away. There are several beaches within an hour's drive and lovely spots by the river for picnics. The house itself, whilst within 20 minutes walk to a village with all amenities, is in a hamlet of three houses. The little road outside has very little traffic and you can walk in all directions.

Activity and Interests

Car: necessary

Coast/Beach:

You can be at many Mediterranean beaches within an hour. La Grande Motte, Palavas, Le Grau du Roi and Ste. Marie de la Mer are all easily reached by car. There are large, wide open sandy beaches with cafes, restaurants and shops nearby.

Travel:

Ryanair operate flights from Luton, East Midlands or Liverpool to Nimes - 40 mins transfer by car. They also have flights from Montpellier to Leeds. Easyjet have a daily low-cost flight from Gatwick to Montpellier and Marseilles. A car is essential. A regular TGV service operates from Paris to Nimes. Eurostar runs from London to Nimes, via Lille or Paris, or direct London to Avignon. From Calais, it's about 8 hours drive.

Distances:

Nimes airport is 35km away. Ales is 15km and Anduze 8km.

Further Details:

Lezan, the nearest village 3km has a small supermarket, two bakeries, a newsagent and chemist. It has a takeaway pizza place and two restaurants. It has 2 doctors, a dentist and a physiotherapist! Anduze, 10km away, has banks, restaurants, lots of shops and supermarkets and a bustling Thursday morning and Tuesday evening market.

The barn itself is completely independent from our house, with its own garden and parking areas. The interior is spacious and always stays cool in summer. The air conditioning is great for hot summer nights and The covered terrace can be used all year round. The barn works brilliantly for children - there is so much space inside and out with a fence all around both the property and the swimming pool.

  • Notes on accommodation: The property is cool in summer but the air-conditioning ensures that the bedrooms stay pleasant throughout the day and night. The property and garden are well fenced and suitable for small children, with swings and other toys available if wanted. This lovingly converted barn retains many original features - the three bedrooms have original beams with velux windows and en suite bathrooms. Downstairs is open plan, with an additional sun room whose large picture window overlooks the countryside and pool. The large garden offers shade and sun. Outside: The garden is well fenced and secure. The large fenced swimming pool (12x6m) is shared with the owners. There are 8 loungers and a shady lounging area. It is surrounded by lavender and rosemary and is not overlooked by owners or neighbours. The barn has its own private garden area complete with roofed courtyard and fruit trees. There is a large outdoor table, parasol and barbecue, ping pong table and swings. Fresh eggs can be supplied by the owners' chickens and often there are fresh vegetables as well. You can walk out of the barn and stroll round the vines and surrounding area - the owners' dogs are always happy to be invited to join you. The owners live nearby and are happy to help in any way. Utility Room: There is a downstairs WC and handbasin off the kitchen. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels, linen and swimming towels are included. For longer stays extra linen can be provided by arrangement. Other: A large sun room with a huge picture window overlooks the garden and pool and includes more comfy seating, books and games. There is a tuned piano. This is a no smoking house.
