About the property

Cottage in St. Laurent de Cuves, Manche, Normandy - Located In Peaceful Normandy Countryside

The house is set in the grounds of an old farm dating back to the early 19th century and has great views over the rolling Normandy countryside. There is a private parking area and garden adjacent to the house. Nearby Brecey has all you need, with a supermarket, bakery and restaurant. Slightly further afield are the beautiful towns of Villedieu les Poeles famed for its copper and the fishing port of Granville favoured by the French for its seafood restaurants. The Normandy landing beaches are but a short drive and are steeped in the history of the liberation of France. Mount St Michel is a must see for anyone visiting Normandy and is just a short distance along the coast. The English/French owners who live nearby are able to help with any queries and are flexible regarding changeover days.

Our clients can receive up to 10% discount on the fare when using Brittany ferries, ask for details.

Quiet countryside retreat

  • 5 of 5

The boulangerie is indeed carefully restored (and yes, watch your head on those beams - though I don't think there's any escaping them!). My dog was extremely happy and welcome for his week on the farm. Mike and Valerie are indeed gracious hosts -- especially in answering so many questions about places and getting there. And do take a meal with them - lovely hosts and Valerie is an amazing chef. Recommend Villedieu-les-Poêles (find the pottery shop just off a little square), the beach at Bec d'Andaine for wide open space, sand dunes, and view of Mont St Michel (this is my favorite recommendation, many thanks), and exploring all the food -- from Super U to Casino cheese aisle and butcher, to all the marvelous cake shops (ok, I perhaps tried them all). The vet in Brecey town square was lovely and experienced with requirements to return to UK (she knew as much English as I do French so we managed, though if you need anything, your hosts will surely help). The wifi was surprisingly fine other than a couple brief spells. Really very lovely first trip to France. I feel most fortunate to have visited this part of the countryside. And I thoroughly enjoyed the woodstove for a chilly spring week. Highly recommend.

Can't recommend highly enough - superb cottage in a beautiful part of Normandy with lovely owners

  • 5 of 5

I rented the Boulangerie cottage for somewhere to get some peace and relax and as a base to explore a bit locally. The pictures on the website looked lovely but the reality surpassed my expectations! It is beautifully restored, cosy and comfortable inside, and set in a lovely garden in a really beautiful part of Normandy. I really enjoyed the views, and seeing spring and all the blossom around. Lovely and peaceful, no sound or light pollution and great views of stars at night. Nearest village ten minutes walk for bread in morning and everything you could need in Brecey.

Mike and Valerie the owners are really lovely people - lots of helpful advice about what's good to see and do around and about (lots!) and great to chat to, but equally not in any way intrusive. I really enjoyed joining them for dinner and Calvados!

I have no hesitation in recommending the cottage, it's immediate surrounds, how good it is as a base to see places and the lovely owners. I genuinely plan to come back.

Perfect Stay

  • 5 of 5

Spent a wonderful fortnight at this great little Gite.

The Gite is well equipped with everything you may need for your stay. The Geese and apple eating sheep only added to the charm of this lovely property

Its location was perfect with all the tranquility of the countryside yet within easy reach of town and just a short drive to some lovely secluded beaches. Mike and Valerie were great hosts from the day we booked and throughout our stay..

We would not hesitate in recommending this Gite to anyone, we loved our stay and hope to return in the future.

Wonderfully quaint, characterful and peaceful

  • 5 of 5

We found the gite to be compact, but clean and comfortable ... perfect for a breakaway for two. The owners were extremely kind, helpful and accommodating, providing us with lots of much needed advice.

Only downsides were a) my husband managed to headbutt the odd rustic beam or two (though I did not being shorter). b) being shorter, I struggled to see anything below my nose in the the sole mirror (in the bathroom cabinet). Another mirror installed somewhere for 'vertically challenged guests', probably would be welcome.

Though the property is more suited to the twin bed set up, the owners were more than happy to push the two beds together for us, ready for our late evening arrival. Thank you Mike.

Owner's Response: Dear Tamsin and Haydn, Thank you for your kind review, sadly there is nothing we can do about our “low rustic beams” other than provide hard hats! A second mirror has been fitted in the bathroom at a lower level. It was lovely to meet you both and we look forward to seeing you again. Thank you again for your review. Best wishes to you and your family. Mike and Valerie

fantastic country retreat

  • 5 of 5

We are just back from a very relaxed week’s stay with Mike and Valerie in the glorious Normandy countryside. The gite is exactly as described, it is clean, fully equipped and a wonderfully calm oasis in a beautiful rural setting. There is plenty to do nearby, recommended visits include- Cancale, St Malo (do not miss the cake shop!), Mont St. Michel, Granville (home of Christian Dior and wonderful sea-food restaurants), Domfront, Fougeres, the landing beaches and many more. There is plenty of fishing and walking nearby. The geese are a delight to watch with their amusing antics and the cockerel made sure that we did not oversleep. Don’t forget to try the Calvados!

The nearby village of Brecey has all the amenities you might need, the bread and cakes at the boulangerie on the Main Street are to die for and Super U supermarket has a good selection of reasonably priced wines.

All in all a thoroughly enjoyable and restful holiday, we will be back

Home from home

  • 5 of 5

This is our third stay with our very good friends Mike and Valerie and once again we have had the most wonderful, relaxing and memorable holiday. We have both fallen totally in love with this beautiful and tranquil part of la belle Normandie and it has become for us a real ‘home from home’. La Boulangerie is cosy and comfortable, and equipped with everything you might need, including a great selection of books and games, a table and chairs outside as well as comfy recliners for sunbathing.

We enjoy exploring this region and visiting new places as well as revisiting some of our favourites – St Malo, just over the border in Brittany, is a must! This year we were delighted by the Château de Guillaume-le-Conquérant at Falaise and also the stunning Château at Fougères, well worth a visit. Not to be missed are the markets, always bustling and colourful – our favourites are Villedieu-les-Poêles on Tuesdays and St.Hilaire-du-Harcouët on Wednesdays,as well as Brécey on Fridays – the friendly tourist information in Brécey has a useful leaflet giving the market days in Manche. We must also give the Bar du Dinandier in Villedieu-les-Poêles a mention for the wonderful food and friendly service – and the pâtisserie next door sells the most amazing cakes and pastries!

Speaking of food, you must have a meal with Mike and Valerie: Valerie is a fantastic cook, who prepares meals with love and care – her crème brûlée is divine and you won’t get better in any restaurant. We sat one warm evening outside with Mike and Valerie enjoying delicious nibbles and a glass (or three!) of wine and Mike’s amazing Calvados, chatting and drinking in the scenery – Life just doesn’t get any better.

In fact, it is the warmth, kindness and generosity of Mike and Valerie that makes all the difference between a good holiday and a superb one – both of them go out of their way to ensure that you have a wonderful time and will help you in any way they can, but they never impose – they are the true essence of hospitality.

We count ourselves lucky to have found such a beautiful place to relax and recharge our batteries and doubly lucky to have met and made friends with Mike and Valerie. We have already booked to return next year and for many more years to come,hopefully..Mike and Valerie – merci et à la prochaine!
