Beautiful, large and comfortable cottage

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely two weeks at Furlongs. On our arrival, the owner David (who very usefully lives next door) greeted us and gave us a guided tour of the wonderfully converted barn, the games room and the pool.

The main lounge was huge and beautiful and the ample seating was incredibly comfortable - a great relief to my Mum especially who suffers from severe back pain. The downstairs ensuite was also ideal for my parents.

The upstairs second lounge (or snug as we named it) was also very comfortable and mainly frequented by our three boys. It afforded beautiful views over the countryside.

The large kitchen was very well stocked and the bedrooms all had good storage.

We all enjoyed the pool - a very good size - and had it been an outdoor pool, it wouldn't have been used as much due to the weather. Instead, we were in there every day. We also enjoyed the games room (even my Mum and Dad - aged 84 and 77!). I also think my snooker has improved (or maybe not!).

Furlongs is a fantastic base and we had many lazy days there but we'd also recommend the Tamar Otter and Wildlife Centre, Tamar Lakes (especially if you enjoy a good walk or angling) - both very close. Our favourite local beaches were Summerleaze and Widemouth. Bude is also a lovely little town to walk around (we had a very nice meal at the Brendon Arms for my Dad's birthday).

Lovely cottage, beautiful surroundings - a great holiday. Thoroughly recommend.l

Amazing place with stunning views. Great location.

  • 5 of 5

We were a family of seven ranging in age from 17 upwards and found the property spacious and comfortable. Plenty of room to all be together or to have your own space. The views from the property were amazing, especially the upstairs lounge. We used the pool, sauna and games room daily which was a real bonus. David, the owner was very welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. The only downside was that our week went too quickly - we all agreed it was probably the best place we had ever stayed and we will definitely be back soon.

David made our group of 8 feel welcome from the first moment and the cottage was amazing. We especially liked the cosy downstairs lounge with lovely fire (logs kindly provided) with the escape of a quieter upstairs lounge overlooking the distant fields. The swimming pool was used every day, warm, clean and safe for our children of 15, 8 and 7. Would highly recommend.

Home from Home

We have stayed at furlongs on several occasions at various times of the year. Every holiday has been relaxing and enjoyable due to the fantastic peaceful location. It's is in a prime location to explore Devon and Cornwall with beautiful coastal walks and several beaches around the area to explore if you don't want to travel too far. The local village has all the amenities you require. Furlongs is very clean and well maintained with everything you could possibly require. Furlongs is the most homely holiday home we have ever stayed in and we've stayed in several. The owner David is very welcoming and close at hand if any problems occur but he is not at all intrusive. He has on several occasions taken in and packed away our food delivery for us which is very much appreciated. The house is very nicely decorated with lots of creature comforts. There is ample space for myself my mum and my four children. The lounge downstairs is big enough for everyone with ample seating and an open fire for cold winter nights. There is another smaller lounge upstairs we call the snug!! With Tv and DVD player which we use most of the time, it is very cosy and has wonderful views of the country side. In the evenings you can see Bats flying past the window. The bedrooms are all spacious and cosy, a full size cot and high chair are provided. The kitchen is always warm and cosy with ample seating around a large table. The kitchen is very well equipped and there is also a utility room off the kitchen with a full sized washing machine, dishwasher and tumble dryer. Another bonus with Furlongs is that you have exclusive use of the heated swimming pool, the children swim everyday and love the pool and games room. We would fully recommend staying at Furlongs for families due to its prefect location and easy access to beaches etc...

Absolutely stunning

We were very impressed with Furlongs .As a family of 6 adults and 2 children the property was ideal. It was spotless. We loved the log fire. Had great fun in the pool. I would highly recommend Furlongs. The kitchen is amazing,as is the whole property. We were sorry to leave. David the owner was very friendly and helpful. One recommendation, if you are looking for an evening meal, we would highly recommend The Bay View Inn. Widmouth Bay. Thank you Furlongs for a fab holiday.

Ideal for family gatherings. Some negative aspects

  • 2 of 5

The major plus of this holiday accommodation was the exclusive use of the indoor pool. This was in very good condition, available from 8 am to 8 pm. The games room had a table tennis table and a small snooker table Wifi was only accessible in the games room, which was unavailable after 10.30 pm. The unavailability of the internet in the main house was a great disappointment. The wifi went down during our stay which was very unhelpful. The bedroom on the ground floor was small with limited storage. The bed was less than firm. Pillows were poor quality. The en-suite attached had a very compact shower cubicle, toilet and sink. Water pressure was weak. The sitting room was huge with comfortable seating for eight. The open fire was used every evening and the owner kindly provided ample wood during our stay. The country kitchen with an oil fired rayburn was the warmest room in the house. The kitchen has a full sized hob and oven. We felt the fridge / freezer was too small to meet the needs of our large party. There was a full sized-dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer in the attached utility rom. There was huge quantities of assorted crockery, cutlery, glassware and cooking pans. The layout of the kitchen and utility room was, in our opinion, inefficient. The three upstairs bedrooms were more spacious and offered reasonable storage capacity. The accommodation was particularly well-equipped for the baby, with a full sized cot in the master bedroom and a high chair in the kitchen. We felt that the house could do with a deep clean, especially focussing on the windows and light switches / sockets.

The house is centrally heated but is not subject to control by the holiday makers. It was a major hassle to have to ask the owner to keep switching the heating on when we wanted to be in the house during the day (at extra cost!!). It was helpful to have three showers in the main house but effectively only one could be used at once, lest another user would suddenly find their shower running cold (less than helpful in February). This meant that it took quite a long time for everyone to have a morning shower, delaying our departure on a day trip.

The general impression created on us, having experience of many self-catering holidays, was that this property did not represent good value for money.
