This old Victorian barn stands in a large quiet garden laid mainly to lawn with south facing sandstone patio and private enclosed courtyard, off a small farm track away from any traffic noise with views over open farmland and countryside. The property is arranged in an 'L' shape with 2 king size bedrooms on the upper floor each with its own en-suite shower room, the lower floor houses a king size room (with double sofa bed), 2 twin rooms, a feature bathroom, additional shower room, utility/boot room. The main kitchen/dining/living area is open plan arranged around a huge double sided stone fireplace with cast iron log burner, bespoke kitchen, reclaimed oak dining table, leather sofas, 37" plasma flat screen TV/DVD and slate floors with underfloor heating. About elaine green

My husband and I moved here in 1998 with our then 2 small children. We wanted our family to grow up in a rural environment and learn to live 'the good life'. We have never looked back. Our children are almost grown now both loving the outdoor life (the eldest loves sailing, surfing, climbing and all kinds of outdoor adventures) and the youngest is a horse and wildlife enthusiast. We are closely involved with the Devon Wildlife Trust, caring for the 'farm' which is now 130 acre wildlife sanctuary and our large vegetable plot which produces most of our needs without any chemicals or food miles.

Why elaine green chose Torridge

The land and buildings at South Beer, including some old stone barns and a dairy was a neighbouring property to our own here at Beer Mill. It was a natural addition to our own land and offered possibilities to expand the nature trails and holiday cottage business we had already begun in 2001.

This really is a fabulous area without major commercial development, lots of peace and quiet, lovely countryside and walks from the garden gate, no noisy neighbours or parking problems - yet all the convenience of a small market town nearby, the lovely sandy surf beaches of North Cornwall/Devon only a short drive in one direction while the wonderful wilderness of Dartmoor or Bodmin Moor is only a short drive the other way.

What makes this barn unique

The 'green' nature of the Stone Barn was essential to everything we were working for here at Beer Mill. We had the opportunity to start with blank canvas and create somewhere wonderful and luxurious to stay which proved that comfort does not have to cost the earth.

Stone Barn is only an hours drive from Plymouth, Exeter and Barnstaple and only just over 2 hours from Bristol and yet you arrive in this oasis of calm and quiet.

Walking, cycling, fishing and many other outdoor activities are all available nearby. Local and organic food available with hardly a food mile in sight !

We love it so much we live here and take our holidays here so if you need us we are always around with help and advice to get the most from your holiday or family celebration.

Booked Stone Barn for a 60th birthday celebration. Incredibly spacious, very well furnished and equipped. Great layout. Lovely welcome as well with biscuits and milk. Really peaceful area and a great enclosed garden for young children. Would highly recommend and if ever we are doing another family celebration in this area would definitely stay here again.

Notes on accommodation: This is a luxury holiday cottage which doesn't cost the earth and welcomes families and their well behaved pets. Underfloor heating pumped by 'green' electricity combined with triple thermal insulation, controlled in zones throughout the ground floor (heating turned off during summer months as environmental measure). Rainwater harvesting system feeds outdoor tap, laundry and toilets. PV electricity generator, solar panels with 'green' electric back up provide piping hot water. Recycled stone, wood and other building materials, eco paints and low VOC stains used throughout the build. Recycling facilities for customers to join in. Winners of the Devon Wildlife Trust Gold Award since 2003- walks and wildlife activities from the garden gate and only a short drive to the North Cornwall coast, Dartmoor and Roadford lake. Stone Barn has many luxury and yet green features. EPC rated A Outside: Large enclosed garden mainly gently sloping lawn with newly planted hedgerow. Sandstone courtyard with picnic benches and cartwheel benches from reclaimed teak. South facing sandstone patio. Gravel parking area for up to 6 cars. Guests have access to the small barn conversion next door with wildlife camera and activities, table tennis, BBQ and more garden furniture. From the garden gate guests can walk Beer Mill Nature Trails - 130 acres of waymarked trails, information boards and activity/rest points. Pet lovers are welcome to bring well behaved pets - we provide a kennel, bowls and dog towels - due to the open plan nature of the property we ask that owners are responsible for their pets. Dogs must sleep in the utility/boot room or the kennel or their own travel pen. Dogs are not allowed on furniture or in bedrooms and owners must always pick up after their dogs. Utility Room: Large washing machine and condensing tumble drier, iron, ironing board, vacuum cleaner, dog basket and bowls. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: All bedlinen (provided and included) is freshly laundered totally organic cotton - all linen is washed with environmentally friendly products and line dried whenever possible. Bath mats are provided and towels are available to hire at £4 per person.

It is hard to imagine a more peaceful and relaxing place for a holiday than Stone Barn but also one with many interesting things to do and see, sit on the lawn with views over fields and woods the only sound that you are likely to hear is the singing of the birds,,walk in the meadows and woodlands of the nature reserve, hides/lookouts, ponds that are home to many small creatures.An old barn next to Stone Barn is home to barn owls they nest here every year, we were able to sit on the lawn and watch them going out to hunt and return with food for their young, a magical sight. The North Cornwall beaches and Dartmoor are both within easy reach, the nearest town is Holsworthy not a lot here except a large Waitrose that can supply all ones needs they also deliver, there are one or two good food pubs in the area ask owners Elaine and Dick about these they are very helpful and also very knowledgeable about wildlife. Our family holiday group consisted of three generations two teenagers being the youngest, we all thought it a wonderful place and had a great time. John. Oxford.

Special interest holidays:

Private garden gate access to Beer Mill Nature Trails -explore 4 different way- marked trails with maps and discover the wild countryside. Orienteering course over 20 acres now up and running, with new additions just completed. Children must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

Coast/Beach:

The north Cornwall/Devon coast is only half an hour drive away at Bude - Summerleaze (sandy surf beach with sea pool) and Crooklets (pebbly and sandy) beaches. Both with easy access from car parks. Widemouth Bay (surf and body boarding), Sandymouth Bay (National Trust) - vast expanses of sand when the tide is out. Several dog friendly beaches or areas. 20 minutes drive to water sports at Roadford lake -largest inland body of water in the South West and easy access to Dartmoor.

Travel:

Car essential as local public transport is limited. Cycling and cycle hire readily available with many nearby off road routes. Cycles can be delivered to the property. Nearest mainline station Exeter St Davids (1 hour drive) or bus service via Holsworthy to Bude. Nearest airport Exeter (1 hour drive).

Distances:

Nearest small market town, Holsworthy - 3 miles/5km for shops, supermarket, banks, petrol station, butcher, organic farm, pubs, health food shop and sports centre with swimming pool.
