Overview

Property

Updated: 23-Sep-2016
Villa in Bigliolo,Tuscany, Italy - Cosy interior, Lots Of Outside Space, Perfect For Entertaining, Completely Private, relaxing and placid

Ca di Carlino is an outstanding villa in the hills of Northern Tuscany. This very special villa was featured in the Sunday Times list of the '20 best villa's in the world', and has been restored with loving attention to detail. The cosy interior features chestnut shutters, Tuscan terracotta floors, exposed beams and a lovely open fireplace. Outside, the private infinity pool and sun loungers are ideal for soaking up the sun, and the shaded pergola, draped with wisteria, is a wonderful spot for a glass of wine and a fantastic view on the Alpi Apuani. Located just outside the sleepy village of Bigliolo, Ca di Carlino sits within private vineyards and olive groves, giving a wonderful sense of seclusion, whilst only 15 minutes from Fivizzano and Aulla and just an hour from Pisa airport and 30 km. from the coast. From the garden you can wonder for hours in the woods or walk to nearby typical Tuscan hamlets. In short, Ca di Carlino is the perfect place to relax and to come to rest.

About the Owner

We, Rino van Ommen, and partner are the proud owners of Ca di Carlino. We sought something to ease our minds after our hectic work as a conflict manager in health care and a physiotherapist. And that was exactly what we found in Bigliolo. Bigliolo is a tiny village, away from the tourist crowds elsewhere in Tuscany, but close enough to drink a cappuccino on a real Italian terrace. The house itself is set at the end of a small road, close to the romantic ruins of a medieval castle, and surrounded by its own vineyards and olivetrees, and at the edge of a small forest. So we are eager to retire and live there permanently. But in the meantime we are very happy to share this beautiful place with you.

Guestbook comments from the owner

'The Lunigiana is Tuscany’s final frontier – a craggy and inaccessible landscape, hidden away beyond Carrera – and Ca di Carlino is the perfect base from which to explore it. Nearby you’ll find the mighty hilltop castle of Malaspina, one of the many in the area, as well as the more delicate Renaissance architecture of Fivizzano. The house itself has recently been restored, and is furnished with a sense of drama – matched by the sensational view south towards the Appenines.' - Sean Newsom, The Sunday Times, 21st January 2007

Beautiful villa

We had a fantastic holiday. Beautiful villa in a stunning location. We are a family with teenage children who thoroughly enjoyed the pool.

Would recommend this villa.

Totally memorable

  • 5 of 5

A unique and wonderful property that offers total peace and tranquility. The house is lovely and the pool is kept beautifully clean. There is a table outside under the arbor that was perfect for breakfasts and lunches (dinners bring a few bugs) and every time we drove back to the house we were struck by the beauty of it's location and its views.

It's about 40 mins to the beaches but that's a nice drive through the Tuscan countryside, in general.

The property is a hidden gem, but a car is a must. Only downside was that local dining was disappointing so best to eat out on days out, or home cooking when at the house. Supermarkets are close by and we used them plenty.

Further Details

Just about 20 minutes drive from the villa there are fantastic restaurants in Serriciollo and Aulla, we would particularly recommend the Contravento (15 min. drive) for the best pizzas in Italy and a wonderful laid back atmosphere, and Pasquino's in Aulla. You will find real Italian pizzerias (cheap but great) at about 15 minutes by car in Pallerone and Serriciollo. Also on the road to the villa you find Vecchia Bruxelles, a restaurant run by a former famous Belgian chef, who wanted to go back to his roots. There are supermarkets in Serriciollo and Fivizzano, and some really big ones in Aulla (Conad, Lidl, Coop, Pennymarket) that sell anything you could want, including a huge deli counter and all sorts of household supplies. Alternatively there are lots of excellent grocers, butchers, dairies and bread shops in Aulla and Fivizzano where you can potter about choosing some really wonderful food. The local markets are Tuesday morning for Fivizzano and Saturday morning for Aulla, both have very fine food sections and are great fun for buying anything from a whole round of parmesan cheese to a spit roast pork joint, watch out for the salt cod, Gorgonzola and outstanding tomatoes.
