This beautiful farmhouse is set in 3 acres of countryside, there is lots of outside space, with hammocks to chill out, lots of sun-loungers for everyone, and we overlook countryside on all sides. The house retains a lot of it's original features, beams & stonework but has all the mod cons, large fitted kitchen, American style fridge with ice-maker and filtered cool water, dishwasher etc large dining room, with large extending table and 8 chairs, and a large lounge area, with corner suite, tv ,dvd player, stereo etc, lots of inside and outside games are provided, and a large library of books. There is a patio at the back which overlooks the pool and orchard, and large lawned area. The house has 2 separate staircases on each side of the house, each with 2 double bedrooms, and its own bathroom, this makes it perfect for family or friends, as you have your own side of the house for privcy, with your own shower toilet..We also have a large 2 acre field, perfect for football, cricket, people even practise their golf here !There is ample parking, and we have a stone built BBQ for eating alfresco. The local town of sauze vaussais is only a 5 minute drive/half hour walk, with restaurants, pubs, supermarket, garage, banks, hairdressers etc. The area teams with wildlife, and there are plenty of walks and cycle routes. The large towns of Poiters, with its large Theme park Futurescope, Niort and Angouleme are within an hours drive, These have lots of shops restaurants Chateaux etc, Cognac is great for Boat rides and Cognac tasting, these are very historical with beautiful architecture. There are lots of things to do and see in the area, if you can tear yourself away from the pool! 8 miles away is the town of Ruffec, where the river Charente runs through, there is great Kayaking here,
The pool is secure with childproof lock, there is plenty of space for rounder football badmington etc
Please note there is occasional noise from trains, these are fast TGV tains that pass in seconds, do not let this deter you from booking this stunning property,we like to be honest, we know this will not spoil your holiday, for peace of mind read our reviews on booking dot com, 9,5 very high, so we know it does not effect your holiday and the trains do not run through the night.
We have fully renovated this property and hopefully,
this shows in the workmanship..It has been a labour of love, with lots of sweat, laughter and tears !!We live here in sunny west France all year and there is no going back. The house and surrounding countryside teams with wildlife, and every day is a complete pleasure, a stark contrast to the North east of Engalnd where we both grew up.
Mrs Melanie Grainge purchased this farmhouse in 2005
The friendly people, and the sheer fact it is still rural France at its best
Visited the area a lot over the years and fell in love with the laid back lifestyle, beautiful scenery,Sunflowers, quiet roads! ,respect the young have for everyone and their polite bonjours in the morning, are a great way to start the day, fresh bread, croissants, fields of red poppies, cheap wine, cheese, being able to eat al-fresco all year round ,,,need i go on
Healthier lifestyle, leaving the stress of self-employment and staff and paperwork and health and safety regs behind, not being in a traffic jams each morning, being able to see the doctor the same day, and you choosing the time to see a specialist,
being able to ski , as only 3 hours away, likewise nip to Spain 5 hours away, oh and we loved the house, as the French like to say we have brought it back to life..
The house was everything we could have wished for, and the owners were very friendly and helpful. The garden was spectacular with plenty of room for cricket, and the pool was great.
This beautiful property is in an ideal location for househunting, holidays and 'get away from it all' short breaks.
On arrival we were warmly welcomed by our hosts, Richard and Mel, who then showed us around the property where we met the menagerie of animals, the firm favourites being the runner ducks, although the guinea pigs who are in liberty in the garden were a close second.
Our evening meals were on par with any first class restaurant and the breakfasts more than ample.
The swimming pool was a welcome chill out after a busy day and there were many interesting things with which the children could entertain themselves, the trampoline being well used.
There are many places well worth visiting near by, La Vallee des Singes is a must and the Silver Mines at Melle are very interesting.
It is one of the best places in which we have ever stayed and will definitely go back there again and heartily recommend it as a 'must stay' as nothing was too much trouble for Richard and Mel....amazing hosts.
he most beautiful gite we have stayed in! Run by the nicest people you could ever wish to meet! This was our first family holiday abroad with our children and we didn't want for anything! When we arrived late at night the inside of the gite was just 'wow', clean, spacious and has all the mod cons while still being a cute farmhouse. In the morning we woke up to discover huge gardens, crystal clear pool, trampoline, swings, hammocks, table tennis, free range guinea pigs and much much more! The owners were so welcoming and helpful and make the most delicious food...if you book in to eat with them you will not want to eat anywhere else again! This place is simply perfect, for families, couples or with friends! We will definitely be returning! Thank you so much for a fantastic holiday!!!!
Without doubt, a lovely house and garden, and well equipped. However, watch out for your disappearing deposit! Ours was withheld by the owners to cover a subsequent TV engineer's visit (to switch the TV channel from DVD back to DTV!) and a few other petty (and arguably invented) charges. In addition, if you like your own space on holiday, then this set up won't work for you because the owners are in the adjoined farmhouse and behave in an unboundaried way.
Thank you Melanie and Richard for a wonderful holiday at Chatenet. We were a group of eight sharing a family holiday. The house is beautiful and very spacious with two separate staircases which gives each family that extra privacy. Our children aged between five and fourteen had a wonderful time enjoying the swimming pool and badminton, along with the opportunity to enjoy the company of all the animals that made our holiday an extra special and relaxing experience. Melanie and Richard were always available to help with any queries which gave us that extra reassurance as they spoke English. The house was amazing and was equipped with everything that was needed to make a lovely holiday. We were fortunate to have good weather which meant we were able to enjoy our meals outdoors every evening in the lovely spacios garden. Thank you for a wonderful holiday.
We are a family of 4 (2 boys - 2 (nearly 3) & 5 at the time). We stayed here with another family (2 girls - Just 2 & just 4). It was perfect. The house is amazing. Worked perfectly having 2 staircases up to different bedroom areas. Gave us some private space. We had the bedrooms that lead off from the lounge and they (particularly the master bedroom) were beautiful. Slightly larger and more spacious than the other bedrooms, but we would have been happy with either. Really well equipped.
Don't buy cleaning products until after you have arrived. There were loads in the house when we arrived and we had spent a fortune on buying new.
The grounds are stunning. The kids loved the trampoline, badminton, boules and swing ball (and the adults did too). The pool is really well looked after. The animals were fantastic. The kids were allowed to find the chicken eggs, there were guinea pigs running around - although they stuck to one area. Just amazing.
We sat by the pool one night and the owner gave us a bat detector which was brilliant. We also saw a glis glis (not sure of spelling).
It is remote, but that is what we wanted. Little town just up the road with a supermarket. Loved the area though. Lots to visit. The river area near Ruffec was stunning. Spent lots of time here. It was about an hour and 10 mins to Ile de Re which is well worth the trip.
Can't rate this place highly enough. It ticked all our boxes.
Coast/Beach:
The nearest beaches are at La Rochelle, Chatillion la plage approximately 1 and quarter hours drive. There are lots of lakes within half an hour of the house, with lots of water sports.
Valle des Singes a very good Monkeypark is near here, its nothing like a zoo, monkeys in their own habitat, people come from all over Europe just to see this place.its superb
Futurescope at Poitiers is world famous.
Cognac is well worth a visist, not just for brandy, for good wine tasting and spirits in this area, with boat trips on the Charente.
Ruffec is only 14kms from the house, here there are some good restaurants and you can go Kayaking/Canoing on the river Charente, also good for fishing and cycle rides
Travel:
The nearest airports are: Poitiers (45kms), La Rochelle, Angouleme, Limoges, Bordeaux. It is 5 hours drive from Le Havre, Caen, st Malo, and 7/8 from Calais, trains run to Poitiers, and Ruffec (8 miles). Hire car is recommended, however we do airport pick ups.

Sauze Vaussais is 1km away. Ruffec 10kms. Poitiers 45kms (futurescope is here). Valley de singe (monkey sanctuary)highly recommended savigne 20kms. Angouleme 50kms(large waterpark). Lake lambon all watersports 20kms. Melle (silver mines)lots of history here 15kms.

Depending on your interests their are lots of day trips, again tell us what you like, and we can point you in the right direction. The large towns of poitiers, niort and angouleme are an easy drive less than an our away, and there are some lovely places on the Atlantic coast, just over an hours drive away, ile de re is spectacular, and ile de oleron, on the road to here the European storks nest on the telegraph poles, it is truly a sight to be seen, these areas are national parks and team with bird life and wildlife.
