About the property

House in Vence, Provence-Alpes-Cote DAzur, France

Set in garden full of old olive and specimen trees, this lovely old house is an easy stroll into the heart of historic Vence with all its treasures. It is a quick 6 mile drive to the beach at Cagnes, and Nice is only 20 mins away, both have lovely proms. Villa Paradou is set in a gated domaine and has full use of the communal pools, gardens and play areas, in addition to its own secluded 16m long pool. It has English Satellite TV + DVD and stereo equipment. The house is approached via an electronic gate into the domaine. It has a very large private parking area. The house is entered through a carved wooden front door which opens into an impressive hallway with its Italian chandelier. The kitchen and living room lead off from this: another hallway leads to the main bedroom and bathroom and the guest loo. The staircase twists away up to the first floor where there are 2 further charming bedrooms and a landing that leads through to the second bathroom and the 4th bedroom.

About David and Elisabeth Hulme

David, now retired, was in project management in the oil and gas industry designing and building refineries and gas plants all over the world. Elisabeth is a secondary school maths teacher having originally working in the oil and gas industry which is where we met. Elisabeth quit working in engineering in 1981to bring up our son who is now a solicitor in Oxford.

We live in Buckland Commom, one of the hilltops villages in the Chilterns. Elisabeth is a keen horse rider and keeps her horse in stables within 2 minutes walk from the house which we moved into 3 years ago after 33 years in our last house. Our son and his family live 10 minute away so we often get see them. They also love France and have had several holidays with us in Lou Paradou where our grandsons loves playing in the pool.

David and Elisabeth Hulme purchased this villa in 2005

Why David and Elisabeth Hulme chose Vence

We bought our first property in Vence in January 2001. This was a 600 year house in the centre of the old town (Cite Historique) which was on 6 floors! It was wonderful living the old town but we wanted a house with a garden and swimming pool. The most important feature however was that it had to be in easy walking distance (5 to 10 minutes) of the old town which we love. In 2004 we found the ideal property which met all our criteria and we moved into Lou Paradou in August 2005.

Vence is a beautiful Provencal town with bars, bistros and restaurants weekly markets and festivals.

We also love this area because you are in close proximity to the sea. Monaco, Nice and Cannes are all an easy drive away and you can drive to Cagnes sur Mer (our closest beach) in 15 minutes.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Here are some e-mails from guests who have rented Lou Paradou.

Dear Elizabeth and David

I just wanted to thank you for renting your property in Vence to our family. We had a wonderful week and found the property very comfortable and our 2 little girls loved the pool and garden immensely, as did we all! I would highly recommend both Vence and your beautiful 'Lou Paradou' to friends and family as a holiday destination.

Thanks again & kind regards

Hi David

Thanks for your email and we had a wonderful holiday at La Paradou - the weather was perfect and we really settled into life in Vence and could have stayed for much longer had we not had to return to work! We will certainly recommend your home to others.

Thank you for allowing us to rent your property

Kind Regards

Hi David,

We had an amazing time at Lou Paradou. The property was incredible, and there wasn't a day we didn't use the pool. It was ideal for exploring the region and it was the highlight of our trip.

Notes on accommodation: The main floor is available as an apartment out of season and would be ideal for someone who is not able to manage stairs. There are fans in each bedroom. The central heating is oil-fired and very effective-though once again, we rarely use it in the day time as the sun pouring into the sitting room warms the whole house up even in the middle of winter. Awnings shade the living-room during the summer. The house is ideal for children. The garden is enclosed and there is rarely any traffic moving around the domaine anyway. The communal pools and play areas are very close to the house and would be an ideal way for children to socialise with other youngsters staying in the surrounding properties. Outside: The garden has a large, very gently sloping lawn with specimen trees and shrubs which offer additional shade. The 16m pool is surrounded by a large sun terrace and has a cool, shady pool house. It is only 1.8m deep at its deepest, making it ideal for those who are less confident swimmers, while its length makes it ideal for those who like to do a 'workout'. There is a set of steps at one end of the pool so getting in and out is very easy for the old and young alike. The steps are an ideal area for small toddlers and small children to paddled and play. The pool also has a security fence around it to protect toddlers from entering the pool without adult supervision. This is a legal requirement in France. There is a barbecue(charcoal), sun loungers, chairs and tables are all available. There is also a pool and children's paddling pool on the domaine + table-tennis and children's playground. Utility Room: The washing machine is in the arched area under the house, making hanging out the washing in the garden very convenient. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels and linen are supplied. There is a 80 euro charge for laundering these- price depends on party size. Maid service 120 euros for end of rental - potential supplement for longer term rentals or if pets etc have created excessive work. Other: Impressive hallway and staircase. The stone built pool house is ideal for dining as it is cool and shaded even on the hottest sunny days.

A wonderful home from home

  • 5 of 5

Situated in a quiet domaine a few minutes walk from the old town of Vence we had a wonderful 2 week stay during which we attended our son's wedding. The large pool and terrace was perfect for barbecues and entertaining family who were also staying in the area. The house felt like borrowing a friend's home rather than a holiday rental - well stocked and cosy. The Cote D'Azur whilst within easy reach feels a million miles away. Highly recommended.

Truly lovely

  • 5 of 5

My grown up family and I spent a week in this beautiful house in the lovely town of Vence. It was a fabulous week. The Bastide is old and gracious and very spacious, meaning that we could all relax and have our own space when we needed it. The garden is lovely, with lots of different 'areas', sun and shade. We stayed in mid October and the weather was excellent; breakfast by the pool every morning and early morning coffee and early evening wine on the little terrace. Lots to see and do round about and some outstanding medieval villages which took our breath away. Thank you!

Old stone house, garden and pool ideal for family holiday

  • 4 of 5

My partner and I took the house for a week in August, together with 5 offspring aged between 9 and 22. The main attraction was the pool, which is great - long but not too deep, so ideal for all ages. We liked the character of the house, which feels like a well-loved second home for the owners: large, airy and comfortably furnished, with delightful, quirky, colourful paintings (I assume by a family member) on the walls, a decently stocked kitchen and vast sitting room/dining room looking out over a pretty garden. The ground floor stays reasonably cool even in August, though the upstairs bedrooms get pretty warm in high summer (there are fans and an a/c unit in the three bed room).

We found the location very convenient for strolling into Vence (lovely) and exploring the Cote D'Azur. Being so close to the centre of town also meant that the older kids could be independent, especially beneficial in the evenings.

It's worth pointing out that there's no wifi. That didn't bother us, especially as the mobile coverage was good enough for all our data requirements, but most people seem to expect it now.

Also, when we were there in high season, there was a level of activity and noise going on in the domaine pool and playground which are a little distance from the pool area, though everything goes quiet at lunchtime and in the evening. To be fair I think we made at least as much noise on our side of the fence.

Fantastic family holiday in charming surroundings

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed a great family holiday in this charming home. It really felt like a home, not just a holiday rental. It matched up to the photos and description very well, but was even more charming in real life. It is a very spacious house and as we were 9 people we had plenty of space both indoors and outdoors. There are so many options of where to enjoy the outside space - we had a yoga session on the lawn each morning whilst the kids played in the pool, and others had leisurely breakfast just above outside the kitchen under the olive tree. The trees and flowers were very beautiful all around the house. The pool is as described, a large rectangular shape so great for proper length swimming and easy for all ages to get in and out of. The sitting room is very large with many different areas to enjoy in it - tv watching, reading corner, large table and chairs. A very calming atmosphere and cool.

The kitchen was very well equipped with everything we needed and in great quantities too! There were plenty of sun loungers/cushions/chairs and tables etc for our large group. We felt the house inside was shaded enough to not miss air conditioning. Personally I prefer no air conditioning where possible and the fans in the bedrooms were more than adequate. Just the kids room upstairs does require the air con - which was provided.

The house is perfectly located in Vence too. It is great for going by car to discover the region as it is only 2 mins to the roundabout that leads to the coast or further inland to places like Paul de Vence or Grasse. It is only 5 mins drive to the large supermarket Leclerc which was perfect as we had BBQ nearly every night!

And it is only a 5 minute walk to the free shuttle bus that can take you into town - for elderly guests or small children this was very convenient. Alternatively it is only a 10minute walk into town anyway. We went in to Vence a few times but were much happier to have our meals at the house as we had everything we needed to enjoy ourselves thoroughly.

The house feels like it has been lived in like a home, with character and decoration throughout. Personally I prefer this than a modern type villa with no personality. Also in relation to the price it is good value for money for this area and with the space all around and the pool, we couldn't have asked for more on our special family holiday!

Could be a lovely place but it needs a lot of updating. Beds were not comfortable.

  • 2 of 5

We had a nice stay, Vence is lovely but the property is very dated and lots of appliances etc were not working. Beautiful garden and lovely pool but whole look spoiled by ugly fence around pool. I know it's a legal requirement but it could have been done in a much more sympathetic way. Also on the website one doesn't see that the house is literally in the middle of a development of flats. This didn't matter too much but I do think it should have been mentioned. The decor of the house felt very tired and quite eccentric - I have never seen so many vases of plastic flowers...Also on a practical note upstairs has incredibly low ceilings - not good for tall people.

Owner's Response: We have never had any complaints about the beds and find them very comfortable ourselves. The house is our home and we have no aspirations to make it into an on-trend luxury villa. The photos are clear as to the type of property it is-shabby chic and characterful- which our guests normally love. When we left at the beginning of June all appliances were working and we have received no feedback that that is still not the case. We were sad to have to put the fence around the pool but safety has to come first. Many of our guests really appreciate the fact that the house is in a gated copropriete (mentioned in the write-up) with the enhanced security and seclusion and quiet; the gardens, the additional pool, children's playground and paddling pool etc. and the distance from any road noise. The 'tired and eccentric' comments are hurtful and go counter to all our other guests' comments. The flowers are, in fact, silk and again we like them and the only comments we have ever received have been positive. We refurbish elements of the house annually. We are an extremely tall family- our son, for example, is 6ft 6in tall and have spent 11 happy years in the house. Sloping ceilings are a common feature of older french houses and we are only talking about a corridor to the upstairs bathrooms and the room which is normally occupied by the children of families in a standard rental. All the photos of the house reflect the type of property we are offering and guests have frequently said that they don't, in fact, do the house justice: especially as you cannot replicate the 'Wow factor' as you walk into the living room for the first time. This is clearly not the right house for everybody but that will always be the case with every property. We would hate a 'marble, glass and chrome' rental and would make sure not to choose such a house. We offer a beautiful big house with a fabulous garden and enormous pool at an extremely reasonable price.

beautiful house in beautiful area

  • 4 of 5

Lou Paradou, a 4 bedroomed house in a gated Domaine in Vence, may be a little hard to find, but its definitely worth it! This is a house more like a main residence than a holiday rental with 4 bedrooms large kitchen and spacious living and dining area. The grounds are fantastic with private pool and a number of terraces to sit out or take in the sun. 5-10 minute walk takes you to the centre of the old town of Vence, an authentic French market town full of interesting nooks and crannies. Welcoming without being too touristy Vence is a great place to relax and let the world go by and a great centre to visit surrounding villages and the nearby Cote d'Azur. Can't recommend the house highly enough......5 star accommodation!

One small request - a welcome pack would be well, welcome, particularly when arriving late on a Saturday.

Car: recommended

The beach at Cagnes is 6 miles away-we rarely miss an evening stroll along its lovely new prom. Nice is 20 mins away and Cannes takes about 30-40 mins. There are many other lovely spots along the coast, we love Villefranche and Golfe Juan. Of course Antibes and Juan les Pins are less than 20min away. Wherever you drive to from Vence, the scenery is stunning. Visit St Paul de Vence and Grasse. Or just drive up the mountain. Another day trip would be to Monte Carlo or San Remo over the border.

Nice airport is about 15-20 mins away. We would definitely recommend a car, although friends have stayed here and used buses to go everywhere. We now go into Nice by bus as it's so cheap, easy and reliable.

If you drive from the UK it is very easy to get to Vence from the A8-10 mins. The house is on the approach to Vence from this direction and very easy to find. The great thing about Villa Paradou's location is that, being so close to the village, there is no need for a 'nominated driver'!

The centre of the wonderful old bustling market town of Vence is only 500m away. The Cite Historic is absolutely charming. There are many restaurants, bars, food shops, clothes shops and a bi-weekly market. There are also many art galleries. Our favourite spot is the terrace of the Brasserie Victoire where you can sit and watch the Real Provence go by over a glass of Provencal rose.

Further Details:

There are many restaurants, bars, patisseries, butchers, grocers, supermarkets, hairdressers, banks, boutiques etc etc. Vence is a thriving community that, however, loses none of its village charm. You are just, literally, spoilt for choice.

We leave several travel guides in the bookshelves in the house, with details of so many places of interest it would not be possible to list them all here.
