Picturesque and Characterful Cottage

Overview

Property

Updated: 21-Nov-2016
Cottage in Bucks Mills, North Devon, England, UK - Quiet Hamlet with its Own Beach, 5 Mins Walk down the Cliff Path

The cottage dates back over two centuries and has been sympathetically restored so that it retains many of the original features, which are blended with modern amenities including wooden double glazed windows. There is a welcoming wood burning stove and further heating is provided by storage heaters and radiators in the bedrooms creating a cosy atmosphere in spring, autumn & winter. The cottage has been owned by the same family for the last 55 years and is maintained very much as a family cottage. Bucks Mills dates back as a small fishing village to the Spanish Armada when folklore has it that the village became populated by the survivors from one of the Spanish galleons shipwrecked off Bucks Mills. Over the centuries the village has changed little and remains completely uncommercialised. There are about 25 cottages, most of which are holiday properties but there remains a core population of permanent residents who ensure there is a community spirit outside of the main holiday season.

Lovely, clean, cosy cottage

  • 5 of 5

Lovely, quiet cottage with everything you need. Great log burner and welcome gifts were much appreciated! We only stayed 2 nights but could happily have stayed for longer. Coastal walks and local woods were lovely.

Beautiful setting for a very relaxing holiday

  • 5 of 5

Perfect cottage and setting for a relaxing family break. The cottage is comfortable and cosy and a very short walk to the beach which is great for kids with sandy areas and many rock pools. Will definitely return.

Perfect place

  • 5 of 5

It was a wonderful peaceful cottage in an amazing setting. It had everything we needed for a family of four. It was lovely to be able to walk down to the beach in a matter of minutes and the boys aged 6 & 8 loved the rock pools. The boys also loved the little ice cream window in one of the nearby cottages, they went everyday to get an ice cream. We will definitely be back and highly recommend it.

Cosy cottage in idyllic setting

  • 5 of 5

This is the perfect cottage for a quiet getaway or family holiday. You find the cottage down a winding road nestled at the bottom a valley in a small picturesque hamlet. The tucked away nature of village results in it being very peaceful with no traffic and plenty of space to enjoy on the beach, just a stones throw from the cottage down a relatively steep pathway. The beach is full of character with historic lime kilns, impressive cliffs and a quaint national trust artists cottage. When the weather was good we were able to enjoy days rock pooling, picnicking and paddling in the shallows.

Despite the secluded nature of the village itself, there are plenty of amenities within easy reach. A small convenience store is at the top of the hill at Bucks Cross and an ASDA just up the Atlantic Highway. Nearby Bideford also has a range of butchers and bakers etc. offering some nice local produce.

The village itself provides a perfect base for exploring the local area and beyond. We undertook many walks from the village to Clovelly, with a stop at the Red Lion and also to Peppercombe with a stop at the Hoops Inn that I would also recommend for a meal. Other activities nearby include the Tarka cycle trail. We hired bikes from Torrington and being a disused railway line it has the bonus of no hills.

There are many nice pubs, cafes and restaurants within an easy drive from the village. We ate two lovely meals at the Pig on the Hill near Westwood Ho! and The Boathouse near Instow which serves deliciously fresh seafood on their specials menu.

The cottage itself is very clean and perfectly sized. The master bedroom is particularly nice and I have never slept so well in the peace and quiet there. The kitchen is quite small but well equipped and the living room is perfect for relaxing in the evenings, especially with a nice fire going in the log burner and a game of scrabble from the cupboard under the stairs.

If anyone were considering a holiday in Bucks Mills I would certainly recommend it. The village is lovely for just relaxing in while also providing the perfect base for exploring North Devon. Better still is this lovely cottage with comfortable furnishings and characterful features and garden.
