Overview

About the property

Cottage in Bucks Mills, North Devon, England, UK - Quiet Hamlet with its Own Beach, 5 Mins Walk down the Cliff Path

The cottage dates back over two centuries and has been sympathetically restored so that it retains many of the original features, which are blended with modern amenities including wooden double glazed windows. There is a welcoming wood burning stove and further heating is provided by storage heaters and radiators in the bedrooms creating a cosy atmosphere in spring, autumn & winter. The cottage has been owned by the same family for the last 60 years and is maintained very much as a family cottage. Bucks Mills dates back as a small fishing village to the Spanish Armada when folklore has it that the village became populated by the survivors from one of the Spanish galleons shipwrecked off Bucks Mills. Over the centuries the village has changed little and remains completely uncommercialised. There are about 25 cottages, most of which are holiday properties but there remains a core population of permanent residents who ensure there is a community spirit outside of the main holiday season.

Quaint, quiet and picturesque, this cottage stay gave us the perfect British experience.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for 3 nights and really enjoyed the cottage and the location. It was great to walk down to the beach made of large pebbles. The cottage provided everything we needed in a truly quaint style. The owners were very easy to work with and we highly recommend it.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the review. I'm guessing it might have been neap tides as the beach does reveal a reasonable amount of sand at low tide and a lot more when the tides are springing

Lovely

  • 4 of 5

This is a charming cottage situated in a beautiful place. It's so lovely that I'd prefer for no one else to know about it! The coastline is stunning. The cottage is little more than a stone's-throw from the sea. The garden is a really nice area to sit in on sunny days (lots of silver-washed fritillaries in July/August) and for me and my husband and 3 children it is a good size, well kept and a pleasure to spend time in. Bucks Mills is small and surrounded by woodland. Even in peak season, it is fairly quiet, particularly in the evenings and mornings. At night, one feels surrounded by woods and water. We enjoyed fishing, we spotted the odd seal and dolphin, and we enjoyed walking to Clovelly and Peppercombe and surfing at Croyde and the beaches/coastline at Braunton Burrows and Hartland Quay. This was our second stay at the cottage. Highly recommended.

We loved all the improvements that have been made at the cottage

  • 5 of 5

We've been staying in Driftwood for decades and can honestly say this was our most comfortable visit yet. The weather left a little to be desired but the new carpets and airy nature of downstairs with the new doors have brightened things up tremendously- well done and thank you! We look forward to our next relaxing stay.

Beautiful location, well appointed and comfortable

  • 4 of 5

We had a lovely break, but sadly no hot water at all during our stay. Thank goodness it wasn't too cold!!

Owner's Response: Thanks for the feedback. I wish you had alerted us to problem with the hot water as we could have fixed it straight away: apparently a bad electric storm affected a number of properties in the area causing thermostats to blow. Everything is now fixed. I'm pleased you found the cottage comfortable.
