The location of the property is ideal for exploring the Charente Maritime from the lovely towns of La Rochelle, Saintes, Cognac to the Islands and beaches of which there are many. The house at Chez Tranquard is set in a hamlet just 5 minutes outside of St. Savinien in the direction of Archingeay. St Savinien has a boating lake, crazy golf and outdoor swimming pool. There is a private swimming pool and a very large private garden. The pool has a paddling area for toddlers. Around the pool there are sun loungers and sun umbrellas. There is a lovely patio area with BBQ and garden furniture seating 10. There is a second patio area with table and lounge chairs. The house has been tastefully renovated and the beautiful old beams and beautiful stonework brought back to life. There are 5 nice sized bedrooms, a large lounge with separate dining room, having a large refectory table seating 10.

We just love this area of France and cannot recommend enough for family holidays.My photo is a picture of a wonderful day out at La Palmyre zoo when we went last year with our grandchildren.

We have been coming to this region on holiday for over 30 years and this is always a popular visit.

The house is in an ideal situation. Access to the countryside, beaches of historic interest is all within reach.

Notes on accommodation: The pool is fenced with a gate. There is a huge garden which is secure for the children. There is a parking area to the front of the property. Outside: There is a swimming pool 11 x 5 metres which has the added benefit of a paddling area for babies and toddlers. The pool is not heated but has a night time cover which keeps the temperature up overnight. The pool is for the sole use of the holiday makers renting the house. There is a patio and BBQ area with garden furniture and large table seating 10. There is a second area with low table and lounging chairs. There is a sunbathing area around the pool with sun loungers and sun umbrellas. Bedlinen and towels are supplied but would ask guests to supply their own beach towels. Other: The lounge has been restored to its full glory showing the beautiful oak beams and stonework. There is a beautiful old chimney There is a comfortable range of furniture.There are a good selection on books on the bookshelves in the window reveals.

Wow, Fantastic House

From the day we arrived at this house until the day we left we had an amazing holiday

I arrived with my husband to celebrate my 60th birthday, my daughter, son in law, and my three grandchildren aged 4 & 7 & 7, were also with us.

We were greeted by Rose who showed us around this beautiful house, so much space. The children were straight into the pool and I don't think they got out again until the day we left to go home, they loved. I loved it because it could be locked at night with a secure gate.

We were greeted with supplies from Rose - very nice touch after a 6 hour drive from Roscoff.

The area is also gorgeous, so much that we loved it we are now looking at buying a property down in this area.

Royan is a must

All I can say is thank you, thank you Rose & Jim for letting us stay in your beautiful house, I cried when we left

We had stayed for a 10 night break in this lovely property in June.

A fantastic travel cot with matress was provided for our 1 year old which was very nice and comfy for her.

The owners kindly provided a fantastic welcome pack with provisions inc a well needed wine after a long drive!!

The property is very spacious which was great as we had a few small children and 4 adults. The pool and very large safe enclosed garden was brilliant for the children to play out in.

We made use of the bikes available to explore the surrounding lanes which the children really enjoyed especially feeding the local goats and geese who live down the road.

The house was very clean and well maintained. Jim kindly tended to the pool each day to ensure it was in full working order.

It is situated in a very peaceful location yet not very far to get to the local very picturesque town.

I would recommend this property and especially wonderful owners to my friends and family. 😀🌞☀️

Beautiful property with pool & great location

Love this beautifully restored and maintained traditional property which is in a great location. Ticked all my boxes as we like to explore the area there's so much to do and something for everyone or if you simply want to relax there's the pool which is very private, great size with loads of ground around the house. The property is exactly as advertisied and I would highly recommend. The owners Rose and Jim thought of everything, providing snacks on arrival to bikes, cots, information pack etc, they have excellent knowledge of the area. I very much enjoyed my stay in this house and I plan on going back there again.

Fantastic stay

I don't normally write reviews but having read the negative one previously given I thought it right to say how this view did not reflect in anyway our experience at Chez Tranquard. We have been coming to this area for the last 8 years and have stayed at other holiday houses in this time, including others owned by Jim and Rose. We have never been disappointed. The welcome pack on arrival is well stocked and the house was clean and tidy. We arrived much later than expected but were still greeted by Rose to show us around the house. (the bottle of wine was most welcome). During our stay the house and pool were well maintained by the owners and nothing was too much trouble. The garden is massive with an enclosed pool and outside dining area which we thoroughly enjoyed. My boys aged 4 and 9 spent hours in the pool!! The town is just a short drive away, and the boating lake is a must visit. This is a perfect place for rest and relaxation. Book with confidence.

Poorly maintained. Avoid

The booking of the property went smoothly and we had a friendly welcome from the owner on our arrival. She supplied a good selection of provisions. There are many bikes for all us to use.

There the positives end. We found the property lacking in general maintenance, there were cracked paving tiles around the pool. The pool was cloudy and had some green algae on the pool floor. The owner visited a few times to try to rectify this. The paintwork on outside woodwork was peeling and guttering broken. The house smelled damp and unpleasant in several areas. Several times everyday, the electricity tripped out. The fridge freezer was left without power for a day when we were out. Each time it tripped out, we had to reset in a building across the road.

On the second day there was a sudden rainstorm. To our horror, water poured through the ceilings of the kitchen, running down an electrical socket, through the ceilings of 2 upstairs bedrooms and through the ceiling of the downstairs bedroom, wetting beds and flooding floors. Water also flooded through the front door and came down the chimney. We mopped up the mess. The owners replaced bedding and towels and replaced several roof tiles.

3 days later we were awoken by the children at 3 am. The roof in 2 bedrooms, had leaked severely again leaving the floors awash with water. Fortunately most of our property was undamaged as we moved valuables after the 1st leaks. Water leaked through the kitchen ceiling soaking this room. The next day, the owners covered the roof with tarpaulins.

We were unable to relocate to alternative accommodation at peak season, so were forced to remain. This is unfit for rental in it's current state.

Owner's Response: The severity of leaks was highly exaggerated and we found virtually no evidence of water penetration on our arrival. We had 2 very bad storms during the first week causing local flooding. We cleared any moss on the roof as this had impeded its efficiency causing the leaks.After the small leak from the 2nd storm we completely sealed the roof with 7 tarpaulins and 600 new tiles to ensure no further problems. We recognised that they had been inconvenienced and reimbursed the full rental for their 1st weeks stay.The tripping to electricity was a problem with the supply,not house wiring and the suppliers rectified the problem in their 2nd week compensating them £150 for inconvenience.We have received positive feedback from our guests all summer in total contrast to these guests appraisal of the property.During their stay they demanded at least a total rental refund while continuing to enjoy the facilities of the house and pool. We feel we have been very generous and we feel their critical comments had more to do with trying to extract further compensation.On their arrival we pointed out that the pool was not as clear as we would like as it had heavy use by previous guests.We had treated it and cleaned the pool on the first 3 days at 7am gaining access through the garden so as not to disturb.The pool could be used safely,after 3rd clean it was perfectly clear. There was so algae at any point.A new roof will be put on at the end of summer season. All repairs and maintenance will be made before start of next summer. Prospective guests can be assured the property is a beautiful well maintained building. We would recommend they read our other reviews for accuracy and feedback .

Fabulous house! It suited us down to the ground, 5 adults, 3 children & 2 teenagers, for two weeks.

Greeted upon arrival by the owner, who was absolutely lovely and so welcoming. She had even left some essentials in the kitchen cupboards and fridge. Including a very tasty bottle of wine!

The swimming pool is perfect for all ages, we made full use of it!

The house had everything we needed. It was very clean and very well maintained.

The house, according to my Husband, is "exactly what it says on the tin".

Ideal distance from the local town, which is picturesque and the people are very friendly.

Would I recommend this property to a friend or relative? OH YES!

Would I go return to this property? OH YES!

Did I want to come home? NO!

There are a multitude of beautiful beaches running from La Rochelle to Royan, St George de Didonne and Suzac. They range from sheltered coves to expansive beaches with impressive Atlantic breakers and can be found within the hour the nearest being 25 mins drive.


New airline flying to La Rochelle from Edinburgh and Leeds La Rochelle 45 mins drive, Angouleme (1hour)Bordeaux (1hr 20 mins) are the nearest airports. The port of St. Malo would be approx 4-4.5 hour drive (195 miles to La Rochelle). The port of Caen would be approx 6 hour drive (253 miles to La Rochelle). The tunnel is another option with a drive down the motorway.


St. Savinien's position makes it an ideal base to explore the many attractions of the Charente Maritime. The Roman town of Saintes, Rochfort, boat trips to the islands of Oleron, Ille d'Aix (where there are no cars allowed and you can hire bikes to cycle round the island) and Ille de'Re they have individual characteristics and many glorious features. The region has a wealth of historical sights to enjoy. The old harbour of La Rochelle, the forts of Boyard and Fouras and many chateaux.

Further Details:

Chez Tranquard is a hamlet between St. Savinien and Archingeay with lovely walks and cycle routes. St. Savinien and St. Jean de Angely are our local towns 5-15 mins drive away where you will find restaurants, bars, supermarkets, banks and markets. The Atlantys leisure complex is on the edge of St Jean de Angely. There is also a boating lake in both towns.

There is a bread van which stops in the hamlet daily or the nearest boulangerie is at Archingeay a few minutes bike ride away. There is a good selection of bikes of differing sizes available for your use.
