About the property

Le Verger is a beautifully renovated complex of historic farm buildings (the earliest building dates from 1741). It is located in the peaceful little village of Coutarnoux in the heart of the Burgundian countryside. The courtyard entrance to Le Verger is opposite the village church while the orchard garden side of the property has uninterrupted views across fields and woodlands. The sunsets can be spectacular. Le Verger includes two farm houses, La Vieille Maison and La Maison Bleue, a bread house and two barns. The property is an L shape, with the two houses facing away from each other at different ends of the L and with a barn in between, so there is plenty of privacy. It is five hours drive from Calais and an hour from Paris by train. The battlefield of Alesia, the hilltop abbey church of Vezelay, the prehistoric caves of Arcy-sur-Cure and many chateaux and vineyards are within easy reach, as are the nearby rock climbing centre, miniature railway, cafe and tennis courts.

About Rosemary Stones

We are Alan Ravenscroft and Rosemary Stones. Alan is a television producer who makes music programmes and other documentaries. Rosemary is a writer. While we have busy lives in London and adore the city with all its vitality, we now also love the richness of the Burgundy countryside and think of Coutarnoux as home and ourselves as Arnulphiens (inhabitants of Coutarnoux)! While we are in London we leave Le Verger in the very capable hands of Hubert and his family who live nearby. They look after the property for us and prepare the houses to welcome our guests. They are so helpful and friendly and you will feel very well looked after.

Rosemary Stones purchased this farmhouse in 1996

Why Rosemary Stones chose Yonne

We bought Le Verger 19 years ago and found Coutarnoux both welcoming and friendly. Alan already knew Burgundy well as his brother has a house in nearby Talcy. We also have Parisian friends with houses in the area so it seemed the ideal location. We spent two years looking for a property we both liked. After many fruitless visits to near ruins and deserted, wildly remote farmhouses, some friends from Paris told us that a property in Coutarnoux had become available which they thought would be of interest. Rosemary liked it at once but Alan (who had done the driving from London after a long week at the office!) was not so sure. However, after a good dinner and warm night in the local hotel he agreed in the morning that it was indeed the place we had been looking for.

What makes this farmhouse unique

Although the property needed a lot of work we could see its potential. We were particularly drawn to the original features (beams, arches, stone fireplaces, traditional tiles) and the mature fruit trees (old varieties!) and vines in the garden. We also liked the fact that one side is firmly in the village while the other side looks out across beautiful countryside. One unexpected outcome of buying Le Verger was the idea to make a television series about English people buying property in France. While it’s hard to believe now, the series, ‘A House in France’ was the first made on the subject. We still occasionally meet people who were inspired to come and live in France after seeing ‘A House in France’. We hope you enjoy your stay in beautiful Burgundy and we welcome you to Le Verger!

Guestbook comments from the manager

We had a really lovely time at La Vieille Maison. The garden and pool were fantastic for the kids and my two girlfriends and I loved the furniture and decoration in the house too, really beautiful and well chosen.

‘We had a wonderful time. You have done the house so nicely, the furnishing, the plates, the glasses, the books, the videos, the cds - it all feels like a home and not some money-making let, which is what we have occasionally experienced. The area is also terrific. We loved the pool by the way. Oh, and we had a truly delicious meal at the Pot D'Etain. We may come again!’

‘Thank you for letting us spend a week in your wonderful Maison Bleue! While the two boys spent their time in the pool and my husband was reading one of the hundreds of books I had plenty of time for my paintings.’

‘We are enjoying our visit so much. We are finding La Vieille Maison very comfortable – and the pool is divine in this heat.

Our two refurbished farm houses date from the 18th century (there are dates carved into the stone, the earliest 1775) and we have taken care to preserve the charm of their original features (oak beams, stone fireplaces, tommettes) whilst updating them with modern comforts. Both houses are well and comfortably furnished with antique and regional pieces. Coutarnoux is in an area of stone quarries (used, eg, in the building of the abbey church at Vezelay) and stone has been used even in quite humble buildings such as the former sheep pen, part of our property. Our garden wall is part of the ancient village wall dating from the time of the 100 Years War when villages had to protect themselves from bandits. Other historic features in our village include its ancient stone wash house, the remains of a medieval abbey, the 15th century Maison des Goix and the 'Sully tree' opposite the church door. This ancient lime tree was planted in the reign of Henri 1V.

Wonderful! 4.9/5 -

We loved both La Vieille Maison and La Maison Bleeu! For a larger gathering of family and friends this worked perfectly, giving space and options for sitting and dining to different groups during the week. Wish we could have stayed longer. Loved the personal family feel of both houses, filled with antiques and masses of books! Pretty bed covers, shutters, and a higgled piggledy layout. The houses are well looked after by Hubert and his team. Very clean and well equipped. Showers in the Blue House were excellent and the slightly bigger cooking space there served well. We also loved using the Grand Salle to eat all together. Wonderful paintings on the walls. The pool was perfect and we enjoyed lunches amongst the roses on the Vieille Maison terrace.. and then moving round for evening drinks on the Blue House terrace. We can't wait to come back! Thoroughly recommend!! Thank you so much, Rosemary, and all your help with our complicated arrangements!

Owner's Response: So pleased your large group found that the property, with its two houses, met their needs. As you say, there is room for everyone to enjoy being together but there are also plenty of places to retire to for moments of peace and quiet. We wanted to offer our guests modern conveniences and comfort whilst also incorporating traditional Burgundian pieces of furniture to match the style of the houses with their oak beams, stone fireplaces and floors paved with tommettes. We're glad you found the result has a 'personal family feel' and that you enjoyed the garden and pool. And thank you for the accolade to our wonderful team of helpers who keep things sparkling!

Owner's Response: So pleased you enjoyed your stay! We love sitting on the terrace, glass of good Burgundy wine in hand, enjoying the view from our garden of fields and woods stretching into the distance and watching the sunset. But, as you say, there is also lots to do and see from our peaceful village, whether it's hiking or canoeing in the Morvan national park, visiting a chateau, doing a wine-tasting or setting off to buy local produce in the market. We hope we can welcome you again in the future!

Wonderful stay in a beautiful gite!

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic stay at LA Maison bleue. The house was immaculate when we arrived. We were lucky to share our stay with Rosemary and Alan on site and they provided us with some great local knowledge.

Lots to see and do. We loved the white water rafting and canoeing. The pool was wonderful to come to for an afternoon dip! The grounds were lovely with great views of the sunset.

Would love to come back again!

Owner's Response: So pleased you enjoyed your stay and we look forward to welcoming you again in the future! There is so much to do in our part of beautiful Burgundy from the sporting activities you enjoyed with your boys to wine tasting (Chablis is only 40 minutes drive away!), to visits to wonderful chateaux and exquisite Romanesque churches. And then there are the restaurants -- from the Michelin 3 star L'Esperence to cheap and cheerful cafes with lots of excellent, reasonably priced restaurants in between. Burgundy is the gastronomic heartland of France!

Beautifully renovated traditional property

  • 5 of 5

This lovely property was very well kept, clean and provided everything that we needed for our stay. The pool was beautifully clear and warm and everything was maintained very well. The owner/manager was very easy to communicate with and provided great customer service. There was lots of local information in the property too which was useful. A great selection of books and some really lovely childrens books were much appreciated.

There is lots to see in the surrounding area with some amazing medieval towns and villages nearby. For a day trip, Dijon is also not far which has some lovely galleries, shopping and resteraunts. Within 45 mins of the property you can visit prehistoric caves with cavepaintings. The local artisans are also well worth hunting out, starting in Noyers with the potters, hand crafted woolen clothing, handmade furniture and sculptures. And there is lots more besides in this wonderful area of France.

We enjoyed our stay here very much and would definitely recommend to friends and family. We were a family of 3, this property would suit a larger family or a couple holidaying alone.

Owner's Response: So glad you enjoyed your stay in La Maison Bleue and enjoyed exploring the area. As you say, the prehistoric cave paintings at Arcy sur Cure are amazing (and even older than those in the better known caves of Lascaux). The nearbv medieval villages of Noyers sur Serein (one of the 100 most beautiful villages of France) and Vezelay have very individual shops with products from local artisans as well as bric a brac and antiques. The pottery in Noyers has stunning pots and tiles referencing traditional designs produced by a real craftsman.

Lovely house

  • 4 of 5

We stayed in maison bleue for a week with 2 adults and 4 small children. The house was lovely. We really felt at home. And it was well equipped.

The kids had a lot of fun diving into the big swimmingpool. The garden was well looked after.

Owner's Response: So glad you and the children enjoyed your stay! There are lots of activities for lively children in the area from canoeing to rock climbing to a 'dinosaur' park. There are also two playgrounds in our little village (one with slides and swings for younger children) as well as a playground 10 minutes drive away in the forest opposite the 'sentier botanique' - a nature trail in the forest with information about different kinds of trees. We have bikes at the house (adults and children's) for guests to use.

Fantastic stay!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Le Verger at the end of the summer. We were looking forward to our holiday in Burgundy for a long time and our stay at La Maison Bleue met all our expectations.

Set in a quiet charming village, it is the perfect getaway to spend the holidays. The house is nicely decorated, comfortable and homely, all the appliances and services worked well, the beds are comfortable and the terrace is private and fabulous to enjoy a meal outdoors. The swimming-pool was the icing on the cake: we were lucky to have fantastic weather during out stay so it was the perfect place to relax at the end of each day.

If you like wine and food, this is a great place. There are some nice wel-priced restaurants in the area (don't miss the Pot d'Etain and its heavenly cheese tray!), the Saturday market at Avallon is fantastic to stock up on delicious sauccison, cheese and other gorgeous foods and the Chablis and Irancy areas are within easy reach for winelovers - we took several trips to visit wineries and purchase fabulous wines!

There's lots of other fun things to do within a 40-min drive of the house so there isn't a chance to get bored at Le Verger!.

Owner's Response: Glad you enjoyed your stay! As you say, there are plenty of wonderful places to visit a 40 minute drive or less from Le Verger. The chateau of Epoisses is twenty minutes south, while to the west lies the exquisite hilltop abbey church of Vezelay, one of the French starting points for pilgrims to Santiago de Compostella. The medieval town of Noyers-sur-Serein (one of the 100 most beautiful villages in France) is 20 minutes drive north. The nearby church at Montreal (another beautiful village!) is famous for its 16th century wood carvings. A museum of the second world war French Resistance can be found in the Morvan National Park while previous Frech resistance is celebrated at the battlefield of Alesia where Vercingetorix was defeated by Julius Caesar in 52 BC. Fontenay Abbey, Autun and the chateaux of Bussy-Rabutin, Ancy-le-Franc and Tanlay are within easy reach for day trips.
