This fabulous 300 year-old French gite, which sleeps 6 with comfort, offers bags of room plus a wealth of original features. The entrance hall has its own 3-piece suite, and the huge lounge features an original chestnut floor, an ancient wooden staircase, antique furnishings and a wood burner stove. There is a separate dining room and a well appointed kitchen featuring part of the original bread oven. The three large bedrooms each have romantic French style double beds. La Chataigne, like La Noix and La Noisette, retains its unique character and charm combined with all modern conveniences, to ensure your holiday offers you some very special memories.

About the property

FR4524

We fell in love with Les Arbres as soon as we discovered it in 2008. Our three gites are full of character, and together with the huge garden and beautifully situated pool, we could see at once that it would be perfect for family holidays. The gites, garden and pool are all situated on one side of a chemin rurale – a quiet cul de sac. Our home is opposite, so we are close at hand if you need us, but equally you are free to enjoy your holiday in privacy. The gites are stone built in the traditional local style and the rural landscape of the Perigord Limousin forms the stunning backdrop. We have made lots of improvements since we bought Les Arbres, including fresh new bathrooms, well equipped kitchens, top quality bed linen and towels, and cosy wood burners for autumn evenings. If you simply want to laze around, our huge garden is fully fenced so the kids can’t escape. The heated swimming pool has a fully approved safety fence and plenty sun loungers. Facing south, it catches the sun all day, and we clean it every morning for super sparkly water. There are swings, a proper boules court, table tennis, kids campfire and badminton. Each gite has its own private patio with BBQ, and there is a huge picnic table if you want to socialise. We have a good range of well-maintained bikes, and storage space if you bring your own. The area is fabulous for cycling, with well-maintained roads where it’s rare to see a car and a beautiful landscape of hills, forests and lakes. We can provide maps and even arrange a ride with the Piegut Cycle Club, which has up to two outings a week of 50-60km. Set in the Perigord Limousin Regional Nature Park our area is often described as “la France profonde” or “deep France.” Life has changed little for centuries and the culture is strongly rural and seasonal. We can tell you about secret and enchanted places to cycle, explore and swim, summer night markets where you can party like a local, vide-greniers antique markets where you can bag a bargain, plus charming village fetes where you can sit with friendly villagers and eat a communal meal. Along with quaint villages, historic towns, typical street markets, fairytale chateaux, river and lake canoeing, tree climbing, star gazing, bird and animal spotting, and fabulous local restaurants, you’ll find so much to do that you’ll have to return. Eight years on and having welcomed many visitors, settling here at Les Arbres has been the best decision we have ever made. But don’t just take our word for it; over the years we have consistently received wonderful reviews and many of our guests return year after year, often booking their next visit before they even leave. One guest described Les Arbres as “a magical, peaceful place” and an eight year old visitor shouted “I’m in heaven!” on arrival. This is your chance to experience the France that time forgot and create your own happy holiday memories.

About Gill Connors

Thank you for visiting our Owners Direct pages. We fell in love with France and the French lifestyle during lots of happy holidays and spent several years looking for our ideal home here. We always aimed to retire early to start a new life, and buying Les Arbres has helped us to achieve that dream. The three gites were already rented out successfully when we purchased the property, and we have made lots of improvements since then. We took early retirement to live here full time in 2011, and now enjoy meeting all our guests, many of whom re-book for the following year. Our house is just across the lane, so we are on hand if you need any help booking a restaurant or anything else. Equally we respect your privacy to enjoy your family holiday. Gill and Pat Connors.

Why Gill Connors chose Champniers-et-Reilhac

This area of the Dordogne has lots going for it but is much less busy than other parts. We are situated in the Perigord Limousin Nature Park, so expect unspoilt countryside, lakes, forests of pine and nut trees, farms, heath and Limousin cattle. There is lots of wildlife including orchids and other wild flowers, deer, red squirrels, wild boar, buzzards, protected lizards and salamanders to mention a few. We love the slow pace of life, and although it takes a while to get used to the shops closing at lunchtime for two hours, you soon learn to do the same and enjoy lunch at one of the many good restaurants. Although we are still learning French, the people round here are friendly and helpful. Despite the quiet location there is lots to do; have a look at our website for ideas!

What makes this cottage unique

We loved Les Arbres as soon as we saw it and knew that it would be a great holiday location for families. The gites are traditional in appearance, but have modern bathrooms and kitchens and carefully chosen quality furniture throughout. We love making improvements so that holidays are as enjoyable as possible, and have installed wood burner stoves for chilly Autumn and Spring evenings, new hi-fis with iPod/MP3 connections, TV/DVDs, reliable internet access, bikes, pool heating, free pool towels and new quality linen, pillows and duvets. We are sure you can tell that we love Les Arbres and we think that you will as well - why not visit us and find out? Or follow us on Facebook.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We have had so much family fun in the garden and pool at Les Arbres that we've literally had to drag ourselves out, and so stuch prettily rigidly to Gill and Pat's "must do" list. The boys LOVED the campfire, building it, burning it and baking marshmallows on it. Thanks to Gill and Pat and to the lovely friends we've made during our stay.

Fantastic holiday retreat.

  • 5 of 5

My wife, daughter, her friend and I had a fantastic, relaxing break at Les Arbres. My wife and I have full on jobs. We were seeking a holiday venue that would provide us with peace and relaxation, with the opportunity to experience and appreciate the French culture and tourist facilities that are on offer. Firstly, the accomodation is excellent, with every home comfort that you need whilst on holiday and is accurately described in the listing. It was spotless and well maintained. Pat and Gill are excellent hosts. They leave you in peace to get on with your holiday, but are always at hand to provide assistance. Nothing is any bother to them. They also provide excellent recommendations for eating out and attended to any minor issues that arise. A welcome pack is in each of the gites and they provide you with a weekly update of local activities, which is a great help if you wish to go out in the evening. This is the 3rd time we have had a three week break in the Dordoyne area of France over the last 12 years and was without doubt the best vacation of the three, considering the location, facilities and the excellent customer service provided by Pat and Gill. I would highly recommend Les Arbres and would like to thank our hosts for their friendly hospitality.

Welcoming, comfortable gite with friendly owners

  • 5 of 5

The gite was lovely and very well looked after. Gill and Pat were extremely helpful and told us about things to do in the area that were appropriate for us and our young children. The area itself is beautiful with no shortage of things to do!

A gem of a gite!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful week in La Chataigne. It was certainly one of the best cottages we have ever stayed in. Clean, spacious, well equipped and in a lovely area of France. Pat and Gill were always on hand for help( finding us some charcoal!), but were never too obtrusive. A walkers paradise, and Brantomme and Oradour sur Glane are well with a visit. I will certainly be telling friends and family about Les Abres!

Wonderful week - a true taste of French life

  • 5 of 5

Myself, the Mrs, 9 month old and my mum and dad had a lovely stay in La Chataigne.

Gill and Pat made us feel very welcome - even doing our first shop for us before we arrived.

Fantastic gite, lovely barbecue area and a wonderful pool. What more could you want?

Recommend a car and a drive out to the sleepy villages nearby; particularly Brantome and St Jean de Cole. Will hopefully be back soon; maybe with a few friends and to hire the whole place!

Fabulous venue for our 3 generation family holiday

  • 5 of 5

The 3 gites were perfect for our different family groups. We could enjoy time together but the layout also gave plenty of privacy so that each group could be independent. The gites are beautifully furnished and well-maintained, and are all very well-equipped with books, games, TVs, DVDs and WiFi. Each has a dining patio with a stone-built barbeque. La Chataigne has a huge sitting room with room for everyone but we spent most of our time outdoors. The large garden is super with swings, table tennis, bikes of all sizes and games for the children as well as a camp-fire circle where we had a good sing-song! The pool is super too.

The owners were very helpful in booking suitable restaurants for us, providing advice on the area and even ordered and collected a sensational Ruby Wedding cake for us from the local patisserie.

We enjoyed visiting the local swimming lakes, village markets and the lovely town of Brantome.

We can certainly recommend the gites for a lovely relaxing holiday.

Further Details:

Les Arbres is nestled deep in the heart of the Perigord Limousin Nature Park. This is the famous 'Perigord Vert' region of the Dordogne, characterised by forests of nut and pine trees, heaths, lakes and wildlife. This beautiful region has retained its character and remains tranquil and unspoilt. The area is famous for its farm products, including foie gras, nut oils, truffles, nuts, ceps and duck products. You can buy fresh local produce at our local market at Piegut on Wednesdays. Our local village has food fairs on summer evenings which are great fun for locals and tourists. Wildlife is abundant, and there are red deer, red squirrels, wild boar, orchids and buzzards near Les Brousses. You will even find a pair of protected Green Lizards nesting near our Cottage! There is a wealth of treasures and heritage to explore in the area from caves, chateaux, medieval cities and picturesque villages along with some spectacular scenery.
