About the property

Studio Apartment in Oltrarno - by Piazza Santo Spirito and a short walk from Ponte Vecchio

The flat is on the south side of the Arno very close to one of the most delightful of Florence squares, Piazza Santo Spirito and a stone’s throw away from Palazzo Pitti. The Ponte Vecchio is no more than 5 minutes walk away and from there all the main monuments and museums of Florence are within walking distance. It is located in a long narrow street. There are lots of local shops, cafés, restaurants, antique shops and a market in Piazza Santo Spirito every day as well as workshops of bookbinders, carpenters, furniture restorers, picture framers and jewellers. The piazza itself has a wide range of bars and restaurants spilling out onto it.

The living area (of about 40 square metres) is largely open-plan having been significantly restructured about 15 years ago. This makes it very flexible - we have sofa beds to giver maximum living space during the day and comfortable sleeping for up to 4 people at night. The apartment is very much the owners' bolt-hole in Florence, so is comfortably furnished with warm 'tuscan' furniture and pictures to make you feel at home (not like the many white-washed, soulless flats you will see elsewhere). We also keep lots of books in the flat, including guide books, cook books and lighter reading (we like detctive fiction set in Florence).

There is a fully appointed kitchen with everything you need to prepare a nice evening meal after a tiring day in Florence, though nearby there are some wonderful restaurants to suit all budgets if you don't fancy cooking.

What really marks out the flat has different are the 3.5 to 4.0 metres high ceilings which give it a much greater sense of space than you might expect. .

The flat is centrally heated with an independent boiler above the bathroom. You might wonder why we don't have airconditioning (yet), but frankly the flat is well insulated by the buildings all around so we, at least, find an electirc fan qutie sufficient!

About Peter Langdale

I live near London (UK) and am married with three children of university age. I teach French and Italian in an independent girls' school in North London. I have many family connections with Florence and have visited it regularly throughout my life and try to go there as often as I can. If

Peter Langdale purchased this apartment in 2005

Why Peter Langdale chose Florence

I bought the flat first of all to allow me to spend time in Florence, visiting family and friends. The central location was a particular attraction when purchasing it, especially the area around Santo Spirito, which has a character all its own. You can do all your shopping within a short walk of the flat while there is no shortage of good restaurants either!

Initially I did not intend to let the flat to others. The flat was therefore furnished and equipped very much with personal use in mind. But soon personal friends and colleagues showed interest in staying there. Since 2009 I have been advertising successfully on Owners Direct.

What makes this apartment unique

As I say elsewhere, the flat is very convenient for sightseeing in Florence - and you can nip back there for a rest or a meal any time you like.

"All your tips on eating out did not go amiss - we ate well, enjoyed the local shops and market, using the lovely little kitchen to make simple suppers 'at home' when not eating out."

"Your library is excellent, but one I have stoically refused on many occasions otherwise I would have seen nothing of the city!"

Charming flat in ideal location. Highly recommended!

  • 5 of 5

The flat is an unusual shape (very tall and relatively narrow) but well-appointed and tastefully furnished, very clean and well-supplied, and is perfect either for self-catering and quiet evenings, or as a base for striking out into the town. The owners have provided a pack of very useful information about the local area, Florence and Tuscany, and plenty of relevant literature on the shelves. The Piazza Santo Spirito, right round the corner, has a number of excellent restaurants and popular bars, although it never seemed very noisy, and the Pitti Palace and Bobboli Gardens are remarkably nearby. The rest of Florence's sights are in easy reach by foot (I hardly took a bus all trip), although the location is well served by buses. You could hardly ask for a better place to stay, and I will certainly be back.

[Heating, water, electricity all very good, bathroom (including shower) fully functional.]

Cosy authentic perfect location to visit Florence

  • 4 of 5

For the second time in two years we ( couple with 2 adult sons ) booked this apartment to visit Florence ( 11 until 20th of august ).

It is a cosy, authentic apartment, perfectly located to visit the highlights of Florence, all within walking distance, just as the train and busstation for visiting for instance Pisa , Lucca or Fiesole. The popular Piazza Santo Spirito is just around the corner, perfect for breakfast and the market in the morning, as well as for the rest of the day, lively until late in the evening, although this causes no inconvenience. It felt like coming home to have the opportunity to use this apartment once again. Thanks very much, Peter, for your extensive collection of books, very helpful to find information before visiting the sights, or late in the evening just for relaxation.

Super place to stay for seeing Florence

  • 5 of 5

An ideal pied a terre (or, the Italian equivalent) for anyone wanting to see Florence on foot. It is literally round the corner from Piazza San Spiritu which seems to be a focus for relaxed nightlife of the best variety (ie chat, relax, eat and drink socially but not outrageousy). Yet, strangely enough there is no overspill of noise, rowdiness or other unwelcome nightime visitor. It was safe, central and comfortable for the four of us ( 2 x Adults, 2 x youths/teenagers) and within an easy walk of all the major venues and sights. We didn't have a car ( too difficult to park) but staying here we didn't need one either. We would easily recommend it to friends and family

An ideal location

  • 5 of 5

Thank you for a most wonderful experience for our first visit to Italy. The apartment is superbly placed to explore the cobbled streets and elegant squares of this beautiful city. All of the directions from the bus terminal via the ice cream parlour(!) were perfect. Situated up a couple of sets of stairs, the apartment exudes character with extremely high, beamed ceilings and quaint fireplace snug to curl up and read some of the many books provided. It was an ideal size for three of us with my two teenage boys on the sofa and pull out bed at one end of the flat and me on the sofa bed at the other with ample bedding for a comfortable stay. The kitchen area had everything that we needed for self catering and the recommended supermarket was only a short walk away with everything that one could want (we do enjoy our food!). Peter and previous guests have compiled a useful folder of places to visit and eat. The local square with a line of restaurants has a great atmosphere in the evening. We visited at Easter so I imagine that eating out on balmy summer evenings would be a lovely experience. During the day the square is a hive of activity with numerous market stalls where we purchased fresh vegetables and herbs for our evening culinary activities!

I would heartily recommend this for visitors wanting a charming apartment with character in the hub of a splendid city. We will definitely return soon to visit some of the exquisitely beautiful art and architecture that we missed on out initial visit, as there is so much to see.

A perfect apartment

  • 5 of 5

This was our second stay in the apartment and we absolutely love it! It's a wonderfully convenient base from which to explore all of Florence, but the Oltrarno neighbourhood in particular is full of character, with a great market, shops and restaurants. The flat is very clean and well equipped. The beds are comfy, the kitchen is really pleasant to cook in and there's an amazing selection of books about Florence to enjoy. February was a lovely time to visit Florence and the flat was warm and cosy. Peter has been so helpful and communicative throughout. I would heartily recommend this apartment and we look foward to staying again ourselves.

As with a previous review, I'm a little reluctant to give the praise this place deserves as it might be booked non-stop. This is what the place should be though. Location alone should sell it. Not only is it a very short walk to the very popular tourist sites, it is (more importantly for us) right on Santo Spirito. Being so close to the station (SMN) you can also very easily get up to Fiesole or take a day trip slightly further afield (we took the bus to Siena for the day).

On this side of the river relax in Boboli Gardens, have a cocktail with the locals in Santo Spirito or go to a free concert at St Mark's English Church (just up the road). For phenomenal pizza head past Piazzo del Carmine to "da Gherardo" (they only take cash). On the way back look out for a very small wine bar on the left hand side where Andrea will talk you through some fantastic vino. Bistecca Fiorentina you will find in many, many places but head along to Osteria del Cinghiale Bianco on Borgo San Jacopo (book in advance) if you want it at $4 per 100g and with the locals.

Got carried away there! In short - use this place as your base. Two will have a lot of space in there, four less so but still possible and with the location you won't do much but sleep in it anyway. Remember to use the handrail on the stairs if you've had a little spritz to enjoy the evening!

Activity and Interests

Nearest Restaurant : Trattoria Casalinga at 100 Metres Car: not necessary

Travel:

Best reached by flights to Pisa (or better still Florence) airport. Direct train or bus to Florence station from Pisa. We recommend those with luggage to take a taxi to the flat from the train station, though it is only 15 minutes or so walk from the railway and bus stations. There are severe restrictions for cars entering and parking in central Florence. However there is a useful car park not far from the flat in Piazza della Calza by Porta Romana which offers daily and weekly rates.

Distances:

Not only is the flat a very short walk form the Ponte Vecchio but most monuments are within 10-15 minutes' walk. Buses run to and from stops near the flat (11, 36 and 37 which go to the railway station) but we rarely use them.

Further Details:

We leave a detailed booklet of instructions in the flat. This also contains recommendations from us and previous guests about shops, markets and supermarkets close by, local restaurants (of which there is no shortage) and things to see in the vicinity.

We keep a 'library' of guide books (old and new), books and novels about Florence as well as some lighter reading in the flat which guests are free to use.
