Comfortable, welcoming, quaint and perfect for our needs with a great location

  • 5 of 5

The Linny was an ideal holiday home with very hospitable hosts that were welcoming and efficient. They go the extra mile without interfering in your holiday. Our teenagers were delighted with their own room with ensuite as well as the nightlife in Torquay. We all enjoyed the beaches, including the dog and pub walks. The property was well organised and the hosts left plenty of information to suit all visitors, so you do not waste time on non recommended places. This venue and location gave us an opportunity to have quality family time and keep all of us happy. Very relaxing. Would definitely return!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind words. Nothing more annoying that finding a lovely place to stay but then not knowing where to go - we, as a family, have experienced that and didn't want it for our guests with so many gems in the area that we, and now our guests, have found to enjoy. We look forward to welcoming you back. Kind regards, Martin and Kim

We arrived to an extremely friendly welcome from Martin, which was the start of a very enjoyable stay.

Comfortable, relaxing, great location, literally everything we needed.

We will definitely be going back and staying again.

We are all missing it already.

Felt at home the moment we arrived....will be returning

  • 5 of 5

From the welcoming and helpfulness of the owners, to the quality and finishing touches of the cottage, to the ideal location for exploring south devon's gems aswell as having amenities on your doorstep, it has been the ideal place for our first family holiday.

Our 18 month old son made himself at home the moment he walked in the door of the cottage. Consideration that we had a young child had been made so that we had no safety concerns. Martin said we were welcome to move things around if it helped with our son which we didn't need to do but it was another sign of the owners customer service. Another sign of this was the bottle of wine and cookies that were awaiting us.

We loved the character of the property, combined with the luxury comfort. The courtyard of the Linny wasn't particularly suitable for our son as it is cobbled but the two other gardens more than made up for it. Although due to the weather and the fact we were out a lot of the time, it didn't really have an impact on us.

After long days out exploring, it was a perfect end to the day to return to the Linny. Sometimes we cooked, sometimes we took advantage of the local takeaways and other times it was just a relaxing drink, but always comfortable. We all slept extremely well whilst away including our son who up to this point has NEVER settled to sleep anywhere other than home.

If you haven't already researched (or even if you have), the cottage has some wonderful information packs which also gives opinions of prior guests. These helped us find places we weren't aware of.

We had a small issue with the wifi on the third day, however after advising Martin, he promptly dealt with the issue and it was not a concern again.

And the cottage also made me realise that I don't learn very quickly. If I hit my head on the sloped ceiling in the bathroom once, I did it again and again. I blame the wine or my age....but I will go for the wine :-)

I think that the quality of the cottage is a selling point in itself but you add in the personal service that you get from the Brooks family and we think that Pilgrims Rest is very hard to beat.

All in all, we will definitely be returning!!

Owner's Response: Dear Sacha, Thank you so much for taking the time to write a review for our Linny here at Pilgrims Rest Cottages. It was a pleasure having your family stay. Richard was an absolute darling and so pleased he slept so well; I know how important that can be with toddlers, having had 5 myself! We have aimed to input everything that we would have wanted in a stay to make it as enjoyable as possible having raised a number of children - a lovely, safe and beautiful place to stay to find some lovely places to explore. Reading your review made me so pleased and satisfied that the hard work pays off and a special time was had. Although you found the other gardens great for Richard we will be inputting an additional area in the medieval cobbled courtyard for our returning toddlers and wine will be ready on arrival again! Kind regards Martin and Kim

Relaxing and Welcoming

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for 3 nights and have nothing but good things to say! From the moment we arrived we were welcomed by Mike and felt so well looked after.

The cottage was clean, well equipped and had so much useful information about the local area. We would not hesitate to recommend this to anyone, especially families with young children, and dog owners.

Thank you from Ross, Kerry, Jack and Lottie dog!

Owner's Response: Dear Ross, Thank you for your kind comments. We are really pleased how the restoration has gone for this historical cottage and so glad that what we wanted to achieve has become a reality. As you said 'longer next time' so hope to see you all next year! Kind regards, Martin and Kim

Disappointed

  • 3 of 5

The barn was lovely and clean, the beds comfortable. The sofa was uncomfortable and the heating was tricky as it was too hot on the top floor and too cold on the ground. I was greeted with the fact that there was no hot water and the owner said that it would be fixed the next day. I was out for most of the next day and when I returned the plumber was there, I got the impression from him that this was an ongoing and known problem. He waited for the owner to return and they then proceeded to come in and chat about what was happening with the boiler. Some people may not have minded this, but I found it intrusive. There was no apology for the lack of hot water on the first night. The water after the plumber came was sometimes hot and sometimes cold. I told the owner this on my departure, whereupon he did apologise. I feel that he should have offered some kind of discount due to inconvenience. Overall I was very disappointed with my stay and would not be staying here again.

Owner's Response: In relation to the sofa, it was only bought in December and previous guests have found it to be extremely comfortable however, I am sorry that it was not of the same level of comfort for you. Additionally, I am sorry to hear that you found the heating difficult to maintain at an appropriate temperature. There is thermostatic controls both down stairs and upstairs to vary comfort in all weather and had I known about this prior to your departure I would have personally set the heating at a temperature you were happy with. The hot water was not an on-going issue but one that arose shortly before your arrival. I did everything I could to get the problem fixed; the next day I thought was appropriate considering you arrived at 4pm. I am sure you can understand that I cannot fix issues that I am unaware of, if I had known at the time, I would have done everything possible to ensure your stay was as comfortable as possible. I am ever so sorry that you did not enjoy you time here.
