About the property

Holiday Home in St Antonin Noble Val, Tarn et Garonne - Beautiful Terrace, Walled Garden, 3 Minute Walk to Village Square

This beautiful medieval village has now been featured in 2 films, "Charlotte Gray," starring Cate Blanchett and, more recently, "The Hundred-Foot Journey," starring Helen Mirren. St Antonin is located in the Gorge of the Aveyron, where the picturesque Bonnette and broad Aveyron rivers join.

Your lodging is a unique (blue lime-washed) house, a 5 minute walk from the main square of the village with cafes & restaurants, bakery & amenities. The house is accessed directly from the street. Behind the house, facing the river, is a private walled garden on the lower level, while above, at street level, a short walkway (elevated above the garden) leads to a stone terrace overlooking magnificent views of the Gorge. This terrace, with built-in stone benches & teak table offers a perfect setting for morning coffee or al fresco dining. Both floors of the house enjoy wonderful views through ample windows, filling the inside space with natural light (emphasized, upstairs, by a skylight in the cathedral style ceiling with exposed oak beams). The newly renovated interior walls are of exposed brick, stone, & colombage (beam & stucco); they provide a rustic atmosphere, while new radiant heating keeps the place snug and warm in all weather. There is WiFi throughout the house, garden, and terrace. A wisteria-covered pergola gives leafy shade over the terrace, and shade sails provide airy shelter from from extremes of summer sun, while sun buffs can enjoy loungers in the garden. These varied and comfortable amenities encourage relaxing with a book, a coffee or glass or wine, and leisurely conversation. Morning and evening, birdsong is provided at no extra charge. : - )

Ideal for a relaxing holiday, Maison Bleue makes a very convenient base for exploring the historic village and the beautiful surrounding region.

About Bruce

Bruce and Bonnie Bishop are a California couple who discovered the village of St Antonin-Noble-Val in 2000. There they found an abandoned townhouse positioned on the walls of the medieval village with dramatic overviews of the Aveyron river gorge. They bought the ruin and spent the next 8 summers re-making it into a jewel of a holiday home. Currently they divide their time between France & California. Bonnie is the director of The Mindful Circle, dedicated to the enhancement of women’s health and well-being. Bruce an artist-builder-writer. They enjoy sharing their home with fellow francophiles.

Bruce purchased this house in 2000

Why Bruce chose Tarn-et-Garonne

We bought in St Antonin simply because it is so alive and beautiful. A registered Cite Medieval , it is an architectural delight that maintains its medieval character, yet enjoys an active contemporary life. The Sunday market is renowned and draws vendors & customers from all the region. The village unaccountably boasts a superb cinema with the latest releases. Picnicking alongside or kayaking on the river is delightful. Hiking, climbing (world class) and cycling are popular pastimes. Galleries abound as artists are drawn from all over the world to live in and around St Antonin.

When we found Maison Bleue it was in ruinous condition, but its position, superbly convenient to the village center and enjoying spectacular vistas, knocked our socks off! Now renewed, it is a perfect get-away.

What makes this house unique

What makes this property unique is the surprise you get when entering what appears to be a pretty but unassuming house on a normal village street.

First is the impression of harmonious hand-crafted elements, from the large double front door to the cupboards and counters of solid beautifully grained wood, the custom ceramic knobs, the sculptural spiral staircase.

But then you open the back door and a dressed stone walkway leads you above a private garden to a terrace overlooking a magnificent view of the wall of the gorge with the Aveyron River below: Breathtaking!

This terrace is like a light-filled living room complete with birds and the distant sound of the river, a wonderful place to sit, sip, converse, read, reflect in sun and shade.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Well - what can we say about Maison Bueue - our home for 7 weeks - we miss it every day and would come back in a heartbeat!!  Maison Bleue felt like home the minute we walked in - little touches like the wine you so kindly left for us and being able to organize with Graham our little hamper of food til we could get to the amazing St Antonin Markets. There was every comfort we needed and the kitchen!!!! so well appointed. Being right in the village was amazing - a short walk for a coffee or a wine or a beautiful pastry. Also - so nice we could park our car so close to "home". The villagers were so friendly - I remember the first day we arrived I was upstairs getting ready to explore our village - Kevin was standing just outside the open front door downstairs - he was soooo excited - he called out "I've already got 3 bonjours!!! - the friendliest little village ever. Our friends ask us what made us fall in love with St Antonin and we can never quite put our finger on it - we just get this far away look and get a bit sad that we aren't back there - there is just something about St Antonin and your beautiful little cottage.

I remember the first time I saw Maison Bleue on the website I fell in love with it immediately - Just the simple picture of the upstairs windows - Bonnie's famous bike and, of course, the terrace. So nice to have that beautiful outdoor area and with a barbeque! We spent many an hour out there eating amazing food with just as amazing wine - ahhhh - take me back! The market also had us interested - there is nothing Kevin likes more than to walk around a market having a chat with whoever would put up with his French! But really just so nice to have all that fresh produce. Now - what were our favourite activities? The markets ...... the little cinema ...... we could sit for hours at Gaspacho just people watching ......stumbling across ancient sites around the village ...... visiting the Vide Greniers in the surrounding little villages and snaffling up all the bargains.... we were actually close to so many other interesting little villages and towns....then kayaking (and falling out) .... what is there not to like about St Antonin - the prettiest friendliest town. Improvements? ......absolutely nothing you can improve - you have thought of everything - your cottage and village is perfect!

Fondest regards, Sharyn & Kevin

Coast/Beach:

The broad and beautiful Aveyron river is a 10 minute walk from our front door. Kayaking and canoeing outfitters abound in summertime and there are many picnic and swimming sites along the river. In season, a local public swimming pool is a 5 minute walk. Splendid hiking and biking trails are everywhere, as well as fishing opportunities for avid anglers. The walls of the Gorge are famous among rock climbers and cave exploration is available nearby as well as two climbing schools.

Travel:

The airport of Blagnac at Toulouse is an hour and a quarter drive from St Antonin and mostly connected by major motorway. The airport at Rodez is about the same distance and, likewise, has many connecting flights from Paris, London (Stansted), Dublin, etc. A car is essential in getting to and from St Antonin, although taxis are available to connect to the nearest train station in Caussade (20 minutes). Many English visitors journey by car from channel ports some 8 hours by modern motorway.

Distances:

Within a half hour's drive of St Antonin a variety of extraordinary villages are to be seen: Cordes sur Ciel, Penne, Bruniquel, Najac, then, but a little farther afield are Montauban, Toulouse, Carcassonne, Moissac, all places of outstanding historical interest, architecture, and beauty. This is a region of immense culture, great wines, wonderful cuisine, where everyday is an adventure for the mind and all the senses.

Further Details:

St Antonin, at the confluence of two rivers, dates to pre-Roman times and boasts the oldest city hall (now a museum) in France.

It offers a variety of traditional shops, as well as a renowned Sunday market where fruit, vegetables, cheeses, wines and local crafts are offered in festive spirit, often enlivened by costumed musicians. There are a wide range of restaurants and bars to tempt passing shoppers into slowing their pace to enjoy the simple pleasure of a spontaneous glass of wine and conversation. All the essentials are to be had in the village: banking, pharmacies, medical service, an excellent cinema with the latest films, supermarkets & bakeries...

A wonderful holiday!

  • 5 of 5

We love staying at Maison Bleu. A little gem at the edge of town, within easy walking distance of everywhere! Beautiful secluded garden. Perfect for a BBQ! Very self contained. Beautiful handmade staircase to first level.

A medieval town, full of narrow streets and places to eat. The river adds interest, and there's cycling, canoeing and an abundance of walking. Excellent centre for exploring the wonderful region, full of ancient villages on hilltops. Abundance of vineyards to the south.

Lovely Stay in St. Antonin

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at Maison Bleau in St Antonin and the description is exactly what you get. The ground floor is not huge but extremely cozy, with all things you need and a very equipped kitchen, more than adequate for a couple. This gets more than compensated with the big bedroom (exposed beams galore!) and the wonderful garden/terrace in different levels as we spent so much time in there.

All in all, we had a great time and this property was the perfect base for us to enjoy this great market town and the local area, very happy we chose this house to stay in.

There is a small beach by the river aprox. 5 minutes walk, and the town square and mini market is less than 5 minutes walk from the property. It is also in a great location, so close by to nearby villages such as Bruniquel, Penne, Caylus, Cordes, Laguepie etc... and very accessible from the motorway.

Go on and stay here, you will not be disappointed!

A Perfect French Love Nest

  • 5 of 5

Maison Bleue is a little home made from love. It has a heart warming feel as soon as you step in the door. I would love one day to have a French home just like it. Its location is in the centre of a beautiful French village which holds an amazing French market, delightful shops, bars and restaurants. And to top it all, right beside a beautiful river.

We were very fortunate to be in St Antonin when they held their weekend Samba festival. It was utterly delightful sitting on the wisteria clad terrace of Maison Bleue with a glass of wine in hand listening to the sounds of drums and flutes cascading from the river with the occasional church bell too. I can honestly say I didn’t want to come home. I was in a very happy place!

Thank you again Bruce and Bonnie for a truly special time in your home. Now a treasured memory but we hope to come back very soon.

Brilliant.

I'm the owner, and I had a wonderful time (although I spent a great deal of time making sure the house was sparkling fresh for coming guests!).

This is the first time I've been requested to review my stays at my own house. What self-serving fun!

Owner's Response: This review of Maison Bleue communicates better than anything I can say about how our guests so often respond; it is precisely what Bonnie and I hope for in renting our home. Our goal has always been to offer the same holiday rental that we ourselves would appreciate: fairly priced, conveniently located, comfortable, excellent amenities, tranquil and beautiful. We are grateful for Sharyn's kind acknowledgment.
