Stazzo Chivoni, A XIX Century Country House - Away From it All!

Updated: 24-Oct-2016
Country House in Luogosanto, Sardinia - Peaceful Location, Surrounded By Unspoilt Nature And 20 Mins From The Nicest Beaches

Surrounded by 2 hectares of ground, the place offers quiet and silence and has a very nice view of the surrounding hills and the village of Luogosanto (5 km away).

Thanks to its thick granite walls the house is fresh even in the heat of summer. Its rooms are simply furnished but comfortable and tastefully decorated. Sheltered by main winds, the place benefits from an ideal weather all year round with warm summers and mild winters. The hinterland is rich of dense cork woods, ilex groves and millenary wild olive trees you can explore by car, bike or simply walking around. The Luogosanto region is peppered with country churches, stazzi and archaeological sites. 15 km only from the sea: you may choose between large, unspoilt beaches of the western coast, where you can try wind/kite sufing, diving and sailing or the beaches of Costa Smeralda on the east coast.

About the Owner

Marzia and Leo. From Milan, Northern Italy, we moved to Sardinia 9 years ago. Quite bit of a change! Here we like Nature and outdoor life. With our small sailing boat we enjoy discovering new bays and small islands in the National Park of La Maddalena. During winter time our spare time is dedicate to country walks appreciating the peculiar and unique vegetation. Marzia enjoyed furnishing and decorating our stazzo which is now very original yet simple and cosy.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"Beautiful and spacious, traditional farmhouse. Well equipped. Fantastic view over surrounding countryside. Very quiet and peaceful location. We visited in springtime when the garden is full of flowers. Short drive to beaches and coastline. Owners helpful and friendly."

"La maison est une ancienne bergerie rénovée avec goût, se trouve dans un environnement avec une très belle vue et tout à fait calme. C'est un endroit idéal pour se reposer et se ressourcer, sans pour autant être loin des plages. Les propriétaires sont très accueillants et parlent français. Nous gardons un excellent souvenir de ce séjour."

Since Stazzo Chivoni was fully booked Leo was so kind to arrange another country house in the neighbourhood, Stazzo Luciana. A beautifully renovated old farm house with thick walls that kept us cool in the Sardinian summer heat.

The house offered us complete privacy (nr 1 priority to us!) as is has its own approach from the main road and is surrounded by 10.000 m2 of wild nature.

Thanks to the information of Leo and Marzia we visited local markets in nearby villages and bought beautiful Sardinian ingredients. We love the Sardinian food and we love cooking! So we were pleasantly surprised to find THE standard cook book on Sardinian cooking on the book shelf in the house. We had a fantastic week, thank you Leo and Marzia!

Very Disapointing - much room for improvement

  • 1 of 5

This property could be fantastic - BUT it most definitely is not. The space and views are excellent but the standard of furnishing is appalling. Don't be fooled by the pictures - many relate to the associated B&B property and many items of furniture shown are no longer present. A number of ther reviews relate to either the B&B property (200 yards up the road) or another house managed by the same couple. The majority of the furniture in the house (bedside tables, bed frames , wardrobes, kitchen storage unit and outside table etc etc) is made of 8 x 2 planks where the only tools used in their construction are a hammer and nails. The garden furniture is truly disgraceful - comprising a cheap deckchair and two cheap fabric chairs one tied together with string and the other where the frame has come right through the fabric making it useless. The outside area immediately around the house comprises dust and weeds and no attempt has been made to provide an attractive area to sit out. Anyone attempting to cook a proper meal in the kitchen would find it a real challenge - the cooker is tiny and there are absolutely no adjacent work surfaces. Even in September the house was cold and felt damp but if you are of masochistic tendencies you will love it here.

Everything is done in the worst possible taste and with the least possible cost and it shows.

Owner's Response: The pictures you find on the owners direct website, on the correct page, reflect exactly the current furnishing of the property. There are no pictures of the B&B my wife and I run, nor of any other property we manage. The pictures relevant to these properties can be found on separate website as the relative reviews. About the furniture, we have handmade most of the furniture you complain about to reflect the rustic environment in which the property is set, a feature that the majority of guests seem to greatly appreciate. More modern and “fake” 5 star level accommodation can be found no more than 30 km from here. Would you have made your disapproval known to us at the time of your arrival, we would have either found an accommodation more suitable for your refined tastes or gladly returned the deposit to you and pointed you on the direction of other locations. You might recall that upon your arrival you were not willing to give us the “damage deposit” (a condition which is clearly stated on the owners direct website) nor were you willing to sign the rental agreement, which the Italian laws requires to be in Italian language. Our observations on the garden furniture are greatly appreciated and we will surely upgrade the quality of these fittings for the coming season. The kitchen is adequate to the needs of a couple enjoying a late summer holiday and you were happy with the typical Sardinian dinner that our professional cook was able to prepare in the same kitchen. We recorded a temperature of 23 degrees Celsius inside the house during the week of your stay which we find to be more than suitable for a healthy stay. We would like to point out that you left the house without properly locking the doors and shutters and this resulted in one of the doors been damaged by the wind. Furthermore we incurred in extra costs due to the fact you left the water pump switch on during all your stay, even if we had asked you not to touch that specific switch. We also found a socket in the kitchen had melted probably due to an overload of appliances. We look forward to host you again in the near future and remain, Sincerely Yours, Leo and Marzia

A warm and friendly welcome

  • 5 of 5

You will not meet more friendly and accommodating owners than Leo and Marzia.

Nothing is too much trouble for them and they even invited us to a traditional feast with 1000 locals in a field where we witnessed an unforgettable demonstration of formation dancing to traditional Sardinian folk tunes.

As Stazzo Chivoni - which is a beautiful house - was unavailable, we stayed in one of the other houses Leo manages - La Finosa. We also met the people staying at Stazzo Chivoni and they absolutely loved it.

We stay all over Europe in rented accomodation booked through Owners Direct but can safely say that we've never felt so welcome and been so well looked after.

La Finosa is an absolutely stunning house which we would recommend to anyone.

The information provided by Leo regarding the local area was invaluable and we used it on almost every day of our two week trip to explore the local area and find the best beaches.

An amazing island and a wonderful welcome.

Thank you Leo and Marzia and thank you Sardinia.

Gorgeous rural retreat

  • 4 of 5

We spent two weeks with our three children (pre-teen and teenage) at Stazzo Chivoni and would happily have stayed longer. The house was clean, cool and blissfully mosquito free at night. It is simply furnished but with everything we needed, although cooking facilities were a little limited. The outdoor solar shower was fantastic and the views from the terrace sublime. As long as you don't mind a bit of driving to get to beaches, this house is perfect, we explored lots of the coast thanks to Leo and Marzia's very detailed directions to out of the way beachs we might never have otherwise found. A truely relaxing holiday, wifi and tv free, we hope to be back.

The perfect honeymoon ...

  • 5 of 5

My (now) wife and I spent a week at Stazzo Chivoni in late July/ early August, and in short we had the most relaxing and peaceful week off in the most perfect and secluded accommodation anybody could ask for. In fact, we are strongly considering upping sticks to Sardinia as a result!

The owners (Leo and Marzina) usually live in one end of the farmhouse property, which they have lovingly restored and developed. This year we were the lucky couple who had the property to ourselves for the week whilst Leo and Marzina had a mini-break.

If it's a secluded farm house with a beautiful garden, surrounded by olive groves, rolling countryside and a 30 mins scenic drive from the nearest beach you are looking for then you will find no better place in north Sardinia - FACT! More highlights are the resident cat Gattis, optional outdoor kitchen and outdoor shower, and the many fragrant aromas that linger from the many herbs and plants surrounding the farm house.

The vision and product of Leo and Marzina's efforts is truly admirable, we had a wonderful stay at Stazzo Chivoni and can only hope that we return one day!

I would also like to add that Leo was particularly helpful resolving a parking ticket issue we had post holiday, they really went out of their way in giving us the perfect honeymoon.

Thanks again! Tom and Laura xxx

Beautiful countryside far from tourism

  • 5 of 5

We spent a lovely week in this comfortable and beautiful house with a large garden and beautiful view. Perfect for those who want to experience a genuine side of Sardinia and explore on their own. The location is quite remote so be prepared for some driving, unless you just want to relax on the spot. Would love to return!

From the Owner

We like this place because it is quiet, with unspoilt Nature and near the coast. In season is not crowded. Local points of interest: • Relax on sandy beaches or snorkeling rocky bays within 20 km. • Great farmer's markets for delicious cheese, cold cuts and fruit. • Visit the eldest wild Olive tree in Europe (4.000 years old). • Sailing & Surfing in the blue sea between Sardinia and Corsica. • Wine tasting in the region of Vermentino. • Visit the archaeological site of La Prisgiona (1.400 b.c. nuragic civilisation).

Special interest holidays:

Stazzo Chivoni is 15 km only from the sea: you may choose between large, unspoilt and almost empty beaches of the western coast, water sports paradise where you can try wind and kite surfing, diving and sailing (Porto Pollo and Palau) or the exclusive and fashionable beaches of Costa Smeralda at east. Corsica and the amazing islands of Archipelago of Maddalena, few kilometres north, are also easily reachable by boat.

Those who like diving will enjoy the extraordinary sea beds.

Further Details:

Gallura isn’t all about beaches and sea; there’s a greener and unspoilt nature just a few kilometres from the beach. The hinterland is rich of dense cork woods, ilex groves and millenary wild olive trees you can explore by car, bike or simply walking around. The Luogosanto region is peppered with country churches, stazzi and archaeological sites. On the way to Tempio Pausania the countryside changes rapidly: from the monolith of Mount Pulchiana to the boulder-strewn landscape of Valle della Luna and the thick pine woods of Maount Limbara you will enjoy terrific views.

For those who like trekking, Stazzo Chivoni organizes trekking tours along ancient rural paths or along the coast.

At night, you can savour the traditional dishes of Gallura at the agriturismi of the region or experiment local traditions in country feasts (in great numbers during Easter and summer) where you will try the real shepherds’ food such as “suppa cuata”, meat-based broths, pasta, offal-based dishes and homemade wine. These popular feasts (that always end with live-music and local dances) were, in the past, one of the rare occasions that shepherds and farmers had to socialize.

Not to miss, in August: “Musica sulle Bocche” in Santa Teresa (live-concerts on the beach at dawn and sunset) and “Time in Jazz” festival in Berchidda with world famous trumpet-player, Paolo Fresu..

From the Owner

You will enjoy peace, Nature and the real Sardinian way of life. A mild climate and the view to Luogosanto. The neighbour sells fresh eggs, organic vegetables and jams! A nice, large and cosy house (with a huge garden) that is difficult to find in other part of Sardinia. It is strategically located between Archaeological sites, the most beautiful beaches and rural villages. A Slow holiday in Sardinia: homemade wines, huge garden, rustic suite ... hike among cork oaks, snooze in a hammock, snorkel rocky bays. Chivoni's quiet and relaxed atmosphere and its proximity to a small country village not yet tainted by mass tourism make it the ideal place for a holiday in close contact with the sea, nature and tradition. Wild, unspoiled and off the beaten track beaches in the west, water sports paradise and beaches with facilities – sun umbrellas and loungers – at Porto Pollo and Palau or more fashionable beaches along the Costa Smeralda. In the North, Corsica and the enchanted islands of Archipelago della Maddalena are easily reached by boat.
