LOCATION DESCRIPTION

THE ALGARVE REGION

The Algarve is renowned for its mild winters and hot summers. The Moorish influence is still clearly visible in its architecture, and there are lots of historical points of interest to explore.

There is something for everyone here, whether you are interested in history, nature, culture, are a beach lover, have kids that love water parks, play golf, like horseriding, love shopping, or just need to take time out and get away from it.

The coastal strip with well-known towns like Albufeira and Vilamoura is highly developed and tourist-orientated, whereas the inland region seems like a world away, and some of the smaller villages tucked away in the hills still have that underdeveloped rural charm.

SAO BRAS DE ALPORTEL

The small town of S. Bras nestles in hills of cork trees, whitewashed houses, almond trees (almond blossom time: around last week in January), fig and carob trees.

This unspoilt hilly hinterland of the Algarve offers you a holiday away from the tourist crowds with peace and quiet. Villa Holanda is about 4 km from the small town of S. Bras where you will find well-stocked supermarkets, restaurants, street cafés, banks and post office. S. Bras and the larger town of Loulé (8 km) are a special shopping experience, you can still find some smaller individual shops, market halls offering daily fresh vegetables and fruit, fish and meat, and weekly gypsy markets.

Take a seat in one of the many street cafés, enjoy reasonable prices, the tempting traditional cakes and sweets, and the unhurried lifestyle and colourful atmosphere.

The local museum takes you into the history of S. Bras as the cork-producing capital of the world, and has a lively programme of music and cultural events (www.cm-sbras.pt, www.amigos-museu-sbras.org). The Easter Sunday procession with its flower petal carpeted streets is a famous event and a must-see.

Eating out in this part of the Algarve is a low-cost pleasure, traditional Portuguese restaurants serving fresh fish and seafood, hearty stews or the famous Chicken Piri-Piri. S. Bras now boasts Chinese, Italian and Indian restaurants as well, most do carry-outs so you could still dine alfresco on your terrace without cooking.

Restaurants on the coastline have a more Northern European price level. Some 5-star eateries can be found here for that special night out.

The prized Algarve beaches and some of the most famous golf courses (the Golden Triangle – Quinta do Lago, Vale de Lobo and Vilamoura courses) are only 25 minutes away by car. Thanks to easy access to the motorway, you can explore the Algarve from East to West. The motorway can also take you to Spain and the town of Ayamonte in 40 minutes - another cultural and culinary experience, or into Seville in 2 hours. Thanks also to the new fast rail link, you could squeeze in a day trip to Lisbon, or instead you can choose to stay at home and soak up the tranquil surroundings.

The owner of Villa Holanda has been living in the Algarve some 28 years and is resident in the neighbouring house. She would be pleased to give you local tips (if desired) and help you make your holiday a success.

Why Gudrun Robinson chose Algarve

Villa Holanda is a charming home-from-home in beautiful countryside surroundings, quiet but not isolated, and can prove to be addictive, as my repeat guests would say! It is an ideal jumping-off spot for excursions, golf, beaches, and even Spain, when you feel like exploring.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a fantastic time at Villa Holanda. A big thank you to Gudrun for all the helpful information and hospitality, and you made us settle into our holiday from day one. The views were spectacular. Pool, BBQ and facilities were exceptional and will never be forgotten. Hope to come back again. Many thanks again. - Trevor, Kath, John, Kylie, Adell, Newcastle.

Gudrun, you thought of everything! We have stayed at many places throughout Europe, but in Villa Holanda what we needed was there. Warm welcome, homemade fudge, excellent location and wonderful views were the "icing on the cake". Relaxing and peaceful time for us all and we hope to return again. - Phil, Allison & Daniella, Birmingham.

If you want peace and quiet with spectacular views, yet easy access to the main highway, this is the ideal place to stay. It was just the tonic we needed. The tour on arrival was very helpful and we would like to thank Gudrun for everything. - The Baxendell Family

Fantastic we loved it. Perfect.

  • 5 of 5

We loved it. we had three children (17 year old stayed in the room near the pool which he loved) and the 13 and 4 year old in the main house with us. It was an extremely hot week so the pool was brilliant for us all. Lots of inflatables to use. The outside area has great shade if you need it. The house was very comfortable and spacious. Huge kitchen and loved the cake and supplies Gudrum had waiting for us when we arrived. She was brilliant. She met us at the airport and we followed her to the house. Later that first day she showed us where the supermarket and other places we may need in the area on a little drive round. She was to hand if needed as lived in the house below and booked us into the local restaurant which was a pleasure. The house was an amazing chilled place with fantastic views. Thank you.

Return visit to our little piece of paradise

  • 5 of 5

This is our second viist to Villa Holanda and it lived up to our expectations. It is perfectly furnished and has everything you need for a thoroughly relaxing stay. The kitchen is well equipped and the property is spotlessly clean inside and out. The pool is well maintained with the option to have it heated which we chose. Gudrun was the perfect host where nothing was too much trouble and her welcome pack was exceptional. We can't wait to return for a third time and can't thank Gudrun enough for making our holiday, once again, so special.

A little jewel of a villa

  • 5 of 5

This was the first time we'd stayed at Villa Holanda and we can't wait to return. We had a warm welcome from Gudrun at the airport and had a lovely starter pack in the villa including a bottle of bubbly and home made banana cake. The villa itself was spotless, well equipped and very homely.

Our lives are very busy so it was a pleasure to relax in the peace and quiet of a beautiful setting. We had a wonderful view from the villa looking as far as the eye could see to the coast and beyond, particularly pretty at night.

Gudrun was the perfect host and couldn't do enough for us. She was always at hand to offer advice and help if we needed.

We would without hesitation recommend this villa and are planning to return next year.

Thank you Gudrun and Martin for making this such a memorable and relaxing holiday.

For a relaxing Time

  • 5 of 5

We just wanted to say we had a Fabulous 10 days at “Villa Hollanda” & Gudrun (owner) was extremely helpful plus Champaign on arrival & Homemade cake, & always on hand or mobile phone contact for any help or info.

A beautiful villa on high ground which is perfect for views & a nice gentle breeze in the high sun’s heat, it perfect for families or couples whom want to relax away from the general noise & hustle/bustle of the norm been in the middle or just outside the crowded resorts etc BUT it is within reasonable reach of the said places, villages, towns, cities by car.

Thank you Gudrun for all & best of luck with your new pet “Come Here Lion” (cant think of his Portuguese name meaning this ?) we are sure that “Lucy” will also be happy with her new friend.

Finally just to say to all .... We highly recommend “Villa Hollanda”; thank you Gudrun from Meave Paul & Family.

Villa Holanda, São Bras

  • 5 of 5

A fantastic villa for a truly relaxing holiday. The owner lives close by and could not be more helpful while also respectful of privacy. The views are to die for and away from the busy beaches and resorts which are but a short drive away if you want to visit. The pool is wonderful and the villa very comfortable. This was our 3rd time at Villa Holanda and we have never found anywhere close to matching it in the Algarve. Be warned that it gets booked up fast so if you are considering it don't delay long!
