Activity and Interests

Special interest holidays:

This part of Suffolk offers fantastic walking opportunities - whether by river, across the marshes or through the forests. Orford Ness, a large part of which is owned by the National Trust, is the largest vegetated shingle spit in Europe. This area is particularly popular with birdwatchers, with RSPB Havergate Island Sanctuary and Minsmere RSPB Nature Reserve very close by. The area also offers much interest for historians. The 12th century Norman castle in Orford, of which the 90 foot high keep survives, dominates the landscape. The castle houses Orford Museum and the view of Orford Ness from the top is breathtaking. A short drive away visitors will find the Anglo-Saxon site at Sutton Hoo, the Norman castle in Framlingham and many other sites of special historical interest.

Orford Quay is approximately five minutes walk from the cottage, where boat trips, sailing and sea fishing facilities exist. Often described as 'Suffolk's Secret Coast', Orford Estuary is part of the Suffolk Heritage Coast and is designated an 'Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty'.

The nearest railway station is Woodbridge, which is approximately 20 minutes drive from Orford. Regular train services to London via Ipswich are available from this station.

A bus service to Woodbridge is available - details of travel times can be found in the cottage.

Great pubs, shops and restaurants in the village - all within a few minutes walk! (Restaurants, cafes and pubs have all won national/regional awards for their outstanding food).

Further Details:

The village has a number of local shops including the village store and post office, a smokery, fresh fish stall (on Orford Quay on selected mornings), newspaper stand in Town Hall, craft shop, antiques shop and coffee shops.

There is a fantastic range of national/regional award winning 'eateries' in the village - all within easy walking distance of the cottage. These include the 'Crown and Castle' Hotel and restaurant, the 'Butley Orford Oysterage' restaurant, Kings Head and Jolly Sailor pubs and the 'Pump Street Bakery' Cafe. Visitors won't have to venture far to increase their waistline!
