Casa do Grego has glorious sea views and stands alone in an unspoilt area of outstanding natural beauty. It is set back from a cliff-top with uninterrupted views down to the Sao Rafael beaches overlooking fig and olive trees and many mature mimosas and umbrella pines. The Grego is a 5 bedrooms converted 150 year old farmhouse but has been sympathetically modernised to retain many of its original features including its bread oven, cisterna and water catchment area. It is a family home with a well-equipped modern kitchen, TV, WiFi, DVD player, outside terraces, barbecue and a gated heated 9x4m swimming pool with gentle graduated steps. Casa do Grego is within easy walking distance of the beaches of Sao Rafael with impressive beach cafes, the new prize-winning marina of Albufeira and many excellent restaurants. Albufeira is located in the central Algarve and is close to several excellent golf courses, a riding school, slide and splashes and Zoomarine - well worth a visit with or without children. The farmhouse is built along traditional lines with walls nearly 1 metre thick in places, mainly stone tiles on the floors and air vents through the roof in various places. The combination of these features and the regular on-shore sea breeze mean that it is rarely too hot. There is, however, a fan in each bedroom just in case the wind drops at night - a rare occurence.

About The Owner

I, my brother and two sisters jointly own Casa do Grego which is a family home passed down by my father to his children. We have all spent many holidays there at different times of the year and most of us regard it as our 'second home'. Each of us is now married with children of our own who are growing up rather quickly and we do like to go somewhere else occasionally which frees up Casa do Grego for other families to enjoy!

Over the years, various families seem to have adopted it as their second home as we have had many repeat tenants with one family staying every year for 8 years.

The area around Albufeira offers so much for each age group and we believe that this is what makes Casa do Grego such an excellent holiday base for families and/or groups of friends of all ages.

The Owner purchased this farmhouse in 1963

Why The Owner chose Algarve

Casa do Grego was bought by my father in 1963 for family use when he was appointed as chief architect in charge of the Vale do Lobo development at Quateira. Back then, there were hardly any hotels and nowhere for all of us to stay when he was working in the Algarve. When it was first converted, there was no electricity or running water and I have vivid memories as a child of paraffin and gas lamps, a charcoal iron, a paraffin fridge and 10 minute shifts on 'bomba' duty pumping water from the cisterna up into the water tank!

We continue to thank our lucky stars that the area immediately surrounding the house has remained quiet and remarkably unspoilt and that the view down to the beach just as magical as it ever was. The beaches are fabulous and we all learnt to swim in the nearest cove and spent hours scavenging among the rock pools.

What makes this farmhouse unique

Casa do Grego is a converted farmhouse with stunning views that was originally built in the second half of C19th. It still retains several of its original features including its bread-oven, ladrilho floors, water catchment area and did have the original 'Christ o rei' hanging by the inglenook fireplace in the living room which was found buried in a wall during the 1960's conversion. Traditionally a figure of Christ the King was always buried in the foundations to bring both the house and its occupiers both luck and blessings. Sadly some well meaning person thought that it had been broken and threw it away --- grrrr!

The Algarve, and the Albufeira area in particular, is well-known as a great place to holiday with its fabulous beaches, excellent golf courses, thousands of restaurants, bars and other amusements. Casa do Grego is a marvellous base for all these attractions but provides an alternative quiet oasis for those who just like to chill out and enjoy the pleasures of their own gated pool and unpolluted air!

We are so glad to be back at Grego! There is a special feel to the house and it's surroundings, the space, the sky, the sea and Arrifes in the distance, and the swallows swooping around us! Wonderful! What you have done to the house is excellent - we love the new kitchen, and now Alistair has been and showed us how the telly works (previous inhabitant left slightly wrong instructions!) everything is perfect... We put the cover on the pool during the day, which has helped to warm it up, and there is no need to have any further heating - once you are in it's a perfect temperature. Everything is perfect, and it is so good to be back.

Notes on accommodation: This is a family home in which the owners once lived and several children ran wild for their formative years! It is a place for a relaxed holiday for one or two families and children and adults alike will both love it. Casa do Grego is not in a development but stands alone in an extraordinary unspoilt area. The owners consider themselves very lucky that the immediate area has escaped the Algarve's rampant development. The nearest beaches (with fine beach restaurants) are ten minutes walk away and are reminiscent of Cornish coves with splendid rock stacks sheltering the inland bays and sandy beaches. The garden is surrounded by a retaining wall and the archway gate through to the driveway and road is lockable. The front garden, which has an automated watering system, is full of oleanders, bourgainvillea, canna lilies, roses, osteospermum and hibiscus while the rear garden is an orchard with orange, lime & lemon trees between plums, apricots & lonquats bordered by a rosemary hedge. Outside: Casa do Grego has a roof terrace, a traditional water catchment area, extensive terracing, one with shade and a built in marble topped table, another seating area converted from an old chicken hutch and wide paved area round the pool. The barbecue is poolside and next to the pump room, the preserve of the pool maintenance team. A gardener comes once a week, normally on Mondays, to keep the garden under control. The exact location of Casa do Grego can be seen by pasting: 37.079721,-8.272254 into Google Maps. The private swimming pool has a retaining wall all round it with a lockable gate. It is 9m by 4m with shallow steps leading into the shallow end. The deep end is approximately 2 meters deep - so not suitable for diving. The pool can be heated by prior arrangement with the owners and an extra charge to cover the electricity used. The pool maintenance team clean the pool once a week in mid- to high-season, normally on a Thursday. Utility Room: Bosch Washing machine Basin Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Bath towels, pool towels and linen included and changed weekly. Weekly maid service available.

Superb location and an excellent place to stay!

Can't recommend this property too highly. Whilst close to Albufeira, it is still in a rural location with no immediate neighbours. The pool is a delight and well maintained. There are also several very attractive beaches within easy walking distance. The farmhouse itself is spacious and very well equipped .It is decorated in a attractive, traditional style and was a very comfortable place to live in. We had everything we could ask for at Caso Do Grego and were very sad to leave. Will be rebooking!

Nous avons passé un agréable séjour en famille dans cette location...

Typique du pays, cette maison est tout à fait correcte pour recevoir 4 à 5 couples... elle est très bien équipée et bien située pour profiter pleinement des environs... à peine à 10 minutes à pied des premiers restaurants et d'une petite épicerie, à 5 minutes de voitures de la marina et des plages, et 10 des commerces plus importants ! Le propiretaire ainsi que les membres de l'agence n'hésitent pas à répondre à la moindre question et réagissent très vite en cas de fortuit... les services sont bien agréable (les dames chargées de l'entretien une fois par semaine sont sympathiques et le jardinier très discret)... en résumé, cette villa est à recommander si vous cherchez un lieu calme et excentré sans être éloigné de tout pour passer un agréable séjour en famille ou entre amis... !!

Special interest holidays:

Unless you are a golfer or a walker, the Algarve is a sun and beach destination but various slide and splash type venues prove a welcome change to the beach for some families. In addition, Zoomarine in Guia is s superb example of conservation meeting family entertainment - an experience not to be missed. There is also a zoo, opportunities to go on Safari, deep sea fishing, big ship sailing along the coast and some marvellous walks for the more energetic. Two local hotels have tennis courts and welcome non-resident players.

The Algarve has some of the best golf courses in Europe and a bespoke golf package can be put together by a local expert should any tenant be interested. Please just ask for an introduction. Albufeira is located almost exactly in the middle of the Algarve so all courses are within an easy drive. There are also some marvellous walks if you are interested.

Seville is only a couple of hours from Casa do Grego, Lisbon around 3 hours away and Faro Airport is a mere 40 minute's drive.

Coast/Beach:

Casa do Grego is set well back on a cliff top approximately 200 metres from the high tide line. The nearest beaches are 10 minutes walk away - a really lovely walk across the cliffs or slightly longer down by road. The closest cluster of beaches are reminiscent of parts of Cornwall and comprise three small sandy bays with impressive stacks, rock pools and a reef. The rocks are sedimentary and contain hundreds of fossilised sea shells. Beyond the nearest headland is a large beach called Praia Grande - the big beach which is otherwise known as Praia Sao Rafael!

Travel:

Faro Airport is the closest (about 40 minutes drive); Seville (Spain) is approximately 2 hours away and Lisbon Airport a 2 1/2 to 3 hour drive.

Distances:

Casa do Grego is approximately 1 mile to the west of Albufeira which is on the coast in the centre of Portugal's most southerly province. It is therefore perfectly placed as a base for activities all over the Algarve. The east/west motorway (with tolls) takes you to the Spanish border in approximately one hour and to Cape St Vincent with its magnificent cliffs in about 1 hours 15 minutes in the opposite direction. The historic town of Silves is 30 minutes away and the beautiful hills of Monchique just 45 minutes by car.

Further Details:

The nearest small supermarkets are approximately five minutes by car with larger ones about 10 minutes away. The really large Continente at Guia is 15 minutes by car in Algarve Shopping. The fresh fruit and fish market in Albufeira is also approximately 10 minutes away by car. There are numerous restaurants in the area with one or two within 10 minutes walk such as the Clube de Pesca e Nautica (excellent) on the road down to the Marina. The Marina itself is 15 minutes walk away downhill but probably a good 20 minutes back! Guia (15 mins by car) is the famous "home" of chicken piri piri. Albufeira itself has a wide range of restaurants although parking can be difficult in high season. There are a number of other restaurants of varying quality on the coast road from Casa do Grego towards Armacao de Pera. There is cork board in the hallway on which previous visitors have pinned various restaurant cards with their comments in the hope that future visitors will share their discoveries and know which ones to avoid!

Booking Notes:
Please contact the owner for booking details. A refundable (subject to telephone usage, any damage and any breakages plus settlement of any local charges) deposit is payable on booking and the full rent is due not less than eight weeks before departure.

Pool heating is charged at £180 for the first week and £100 for the second week which is as near average actual cost incurred as possible.

Extra cots and high chairs are available on request and will be charged locally.

All rents are stated in pounds sterling. Rents quoted in Euro are available upon request.

Changeover Day:
We no longer have a set changeover day and are happy to take bookings of any reasonable length, other bookings permitting.

Notes on prices:
Our prices are inclusive of rent, services, weekly maid service, towels and linen. Heating of the pool, if required, is an extra and is charged as closely as possible to the actual electricity used at £180 for the first week and £100 for the second week or part thereof.

A returnable* deposit of £500 on booking with the full rental amount payable not less than 8 weeks before departure. Deposits are refundable on confirmation of no breakages and settlement of any local charges (eg telephone, pool heating, extra maid service etc.).

Owner's Cancellation Policy

  • 50% refund for cancellations more than 7 days before check-in date.
  • 100% refund for cancellations more than 14 days before check-in date.
