'L'Etoile De Mer' - Coastal Villa With Private Pool

Updated: 17-Oct-2016
Five-bedroomed, three bathroom, detached villa with private, heated pool within walking distance of superb beaches, restaurants, shops and bars

La Tranche sur mer is an unspoilt family-friendly seaside town with a strong 'French' ambience, 60 minutes drive from La Rochelle airport or 3 to 4 hours from the St.Malo ferry. The town has plenty of restaurants, bars and shops and in the summer months is lively with many free activities and street entertainment. The villa benefits from being close to the centre of town but within a short walk or cycle ride of the superb beach of La Terriere which is thought by many to be the best in the area. The beach is well supervised and has free car parking, several snack bars and a surf school. It is easy to escape the crowds by walking a short distance along the huge beach. There are also beautiful forest walks practically on the doorstep. This well-equipped and newly-built architect-designed villa has a heated pool and is set in a private situation with sandy wooded gardens front and rear and several spacious terraces. The Ground floor bedroom / en-suite are suitable for reduced mobility use.

'Thank you so much for letting us use your villa, which along with its location really made a superb break. The villa itself was fantastic, perfectly laid out, especially the outdoor terrace and pool, which was a welcome sight every morning. Such a beautiful location, the beaches were wonderful. We spent most days on the beach or lazing by the pool, but we did venture into La Tranche sur Mer, and that was a very pleasant surprise. We had a lovely meal, and my sons loved the rock pools... The best days out we had were at Puy de Fou and the Zoo at Sables d'Olonne' Mr&Mrs G - W.Sussex.

'...had a very enjoyable holiday. Especially enjoyed the pool, the walks in the forest and generally cycling around La Tranche and la Terriere...'Dr. & Mrs. W - Cambridge

'We found the place very clean and extremely well-equipped...The surrounding area was beautiful - the beaches were definitely some of the best we've seen in France..' Mr. and Mrs. T - Surrey

This was our (two related families)second visit to this property, the 1st time was in 2012 and within the first day we decided to book for the following year - we were gutted when it wasn't available. When we returned last year it was everything and more than we had remembered. The House itself is wonderful and the outside terrace, seating and pool area is to die for. Our late teens sons were with us the first year and practically lived in the pool with my 80 plus Mum looking on from the sun terrace which she could access directly from the ground floor en suite bedroom. This room is perfect for people of limited mobility. The estate is beautiful and the walk to the beach is stunning. A five minute walk takes you to the village of La Terriere which has a great wee bar, bakery and hotel with a good restaurant. 20 minutes walk the other direction is the small town of La Tranche sur Mer which is just lovely, some great restaurants and some really nice shops. All that said, we are at our happiest having a barbeque at the outside seating area after a lazy day at the pool. The outside dining area is covered so even if there is spot of rain you can still be outside. Although our weather has always been mainly great. We are going again this year and can't wait. There is nothing to beat sitting in the late sun before dinner by the pool with a glass of vin blanc and delicious local olives from the market in La Tranche. We have all been coming to France for over 20 years and this is our favourite area. Indeed this is our favourite Villa and will always be our first choice when coming here. The owner, David, is extremely helpful and makes the whole experience a total pleasure. I do not have a single negative thing to say

Home from Home - but with a private pool

  • 5 of 5

This is a large, comfortable, well appointed family home but we visited for a week as a couple only. I am always concerned booking French holiday homes because of the quality and comfort of the beds and furnishings and everything here met or exceeded our expectations. We loved the privacy the property created which centred around the pool area enabling us to eat outside every evening. The owners have the property well equipped with lots of swim floats and although we used the pool every day the star day out was surfing in the sea which was a few minutes cycle away. We used the house as a base to cycle from every day and the owner provided really good information and recommendations for this. We took our own bikes but we could have also used the bikes at the house. This has been one of my most memorable summer holidays because of the location - it is a little way from the centre which means that it is really peaceful at night but easy enough to access the bars and restaurants should you wish. We tried some of the recommended restaurants of the owner and fully agreed with his comments. We are thinking about returning again next summer but possibly for longer if we can.

Excellent family house

  • 5 of 5

The house was perfect for us (2 couples with 3 children and a baby between us). Swimming pool was great. The bikes provided were in good condition and the kids loved the bike trailer. Only a short cycle through woods to get icecream from town. Big sandy beach nearby. Quiet. Clean. No problems at all. Friendly owner. Well recommended.

Family Holiday in La Tranche

  • 5 of 5

The villa was stylish and elegantly furnished but most welcoming. We were an extended family of ten covering an age range from 8 to 70. Everyone enjoyed themselves as there was much to do around the terrace and the pool and the short walk to the beach was an added bonus. Many days the children were in the pool for 6+ hours. We enjoyed the early morning walks to the village to buy the bread. A most enjoyable holiday in a delightful villa which I would thoroughly recommend.

From the Owner

We purchased our plot in 2004 and the house was completed to our design (David is an architect) a year later. We started coming to La Tranche when our three children were small and we have many happy memories and associations with the area. Our children have now grown up so we tend to use the house either side of the high season. We think our location is great, because it has beautiful natural surroundings and is quiet but it is also close enough to walk or cycle to the restaurants and shops in La Tranche. Our beach at La Terriere is (in our opinion) the best in the area. It is lovely to be able to hear the surf at night and to stroll to the beach through the forest. We also love cycling and walking in the surrounding countryside and coastal routes, which are thankfully almost level!

The Vendée is famed for its micro-climate which produces a sunshine record similar to the Riviera. Its beaches are equally renowned for their cleanliness, variety and being relatively unspoilt. La Tranche itself has beaches which are sheltered and interesting at low tide. Our local beach is wide and long with good breakers for surfing and body boarding. It has an official 'clothing optional' area a short distance from the main beach area. The beach is a short walk or 5 minutes drive or cycle.

Nearest airport is at La Rochelle, less than 60 minutes drive away. Other possibilities are Nantes, Rennes, Bergerac or Bordeaux varying from 1.5 to 3 hours drive. Car Hire is available at all. Nearest Ferry port is St.Malo at 3.5 hours drive, followed by Caen, Le Havre and Cherbourg which are 1 or 2 hours more. It is possible to get to the house by public transport i.e. by a combination of plane/train and then bus or taxi. Once there, shopping and getting about can be managed on foot or bike.

La Tranche town centre is approx 1.5km. La Terriere village centre (bakery, bar, hotel/restaurant) is approx 0.5km and the beach is 1km. Large supermaket 5 minutes drive, on the edge of town. There is also a lively and large twice-weekly market in La Tranche town centre which is well worth a visit.

  • Notes on accommodation: The villa is located in a quiet residential estate and is recently built. Furniture and decoration are tastefully modern and simple. The grounds are excellent for children of all ages with secure fencing around the pool and sandy play areas shaded by trees. The gardens are attractive and varied and includes an area of native woodland accessed from the first floor. The accommodation works well for two families sharing and because of the two en-suite bedrooms both sets of parents can enjoy a similar standard of amenity. Bedroom 4 is set up as a children’s room for four to share. All of the bedrooms have views over the pool area and rear garden. Outside: The delightful south-facing patio and pool area is the focus of the house with all rooms having views onto it. The pool is approximately 4.5m wide by 11.2m long and has integral steps at one end leading to a large sunbathing area. It has a deep end and a shallow end and two underwater lights. The pool is heated and maintained at a comfortable temperature throughout the summer months. Around the pool is an outside shower and WC, sunbathing terraces, and access to the covered verandah which is fenced off from the pool. The verandah also gives access to the garage where bikes and beach stuff, windsurfers etc.. can be stored. There are a number of bicycles which guests are welcome to use (at their own risk). The verandah has a large outside table for ten, a barbecue, table tennis, loungers and sunbeds. Utility Room: Large sink with storage above, washing machine, ironing board, iron, cleaning equipment. Door to outside drying area. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Bedlinen and handtowels are provided for each letting but not bath or beach towels. The property is checked and cleaned between lets but guests are expected to leave the house in a reasonably clean and tidy state. Other: The covered verandah is a great space for outside dining and sitting out in the evening or for shade during the day time. Also good as a play area in the event of rain as it is secured from the pool area by a locking gate and balustrading.
