Spacious Gascon Farmhouse

Overview

Property

Updated: 05-Dec-2016
Farmhouse in Puymaurin, Haute-Garonne, Midi-Pyrénées - Lovingly restored farmhouse with large private pool and fabulous views

Our house is a lovely four bedroom, two large bathroom, traditional Gascon Farmhouse, which has been fully restored with a mix of traditional and modern design. The house is approximately 450 sq meters making it ideal for large family holidays, or two families sharing. It sits on a ridge with panoramic views of the Pyrénées and Gascony landscape, and is set in seven acres of land with a small wood. A large open grange provides shelter for parking or boules. We have an extra large pool of 8m x 15m for those who like to swim lengths. The pool has a shallow end for children, and a deep end for diving. The property is located in an unspoilt, rural and peaceful location with easy access to the mountains for walking, climbing, skiing or water sports. Toulouse, Pau, Carcassone, Lourdes and the Marciac International Jazz Festival are all within an easy driving distance. Please visit our website at the bottom of the page for more pictures and details.

One of the few houses we have stayed in that is better in reality than the website pictures. We enjoyed the beautiful setting and attractive house. We appreciated your sensitive touch, and enjoyed the old textures combined with the more modern finishes and the amusing use of ‘found’ objects. S and R London June 2011

We have had a fantastic stay at ‘Res Des’ what a wonderful house in such a fabulous Location. We have really enoyed our stay.Your housekeeper ‘the lovely Lynette’, was extremely helpful, took time to really show us around the house and grounds and gave us lots of helpful advise and information. The B family Suffolk June 2011

A farmhouse in countryside that looked ravishing in its spring green, basking in the almost unbroken sunshine. Meals on the terrace being serenaded by a nightingale and the occasional frog. A most sensitve conversion preserving the old and adding the new. It was a wonderful holiday in a lovely location. R family April 2011

What all holiday houses should be like!

  • 5 of 5

"Desbarats" is truly the best place we've stayed at in many, many years. The house is really a home - it's welcoming, open and airy, and easy to live in. Clean and tidy too. The kitchen is, in effect, a wonderful family living room - we spent many a good night in there! The beds/mattresses were excellent quality, as was all the linen - which are important considerations when hiring holiday places for a week. The surrounding area is rural, peaceful and picturesque, and our day trips to the Pyrenees (Luchon) and to the live fowl market (yes, live) in Samatin were truly memorable. Clearly a lot of tender loving care, and hard work has gone into this house. It must also be said that Lynette (the lady who meets you and opens the house up for you on arrival) cannot have been any more welcoming and/or helpful - she's a real gem. Thanks for sharing your fabulous house with us - we'll be back for sure!

Amazing House & Location

  • 5 of 5

Our third visit to this amazing house and our 15th year in the area. I think it's very unlikely that there is a house better situated with regard to views and location - just a real treasure in a part of France that is still undiscovered and you can drive 10 minutes in August and not see another car !! Accomodation is spacious, clean and exactly as described with everything you need for a complete home from home with an an amazing showeroom, bathroom and swimming pool!. A house that you would be really proud to invite friends to. Our large party included people with an age range between 17 and 80 and they want to return every year ! Local people are very welcoming and friendly and although it's a rural area with restaurants and bars that are a short drive away and typically Freanch they are worth getting to know for the great hospitality. There are sports activities close by for the adventurous. I couldn't recommend a house more - a house to buy if you win the lottery !

Location

From the Owner

We were visiting the region and decided to look at a few properties for fun. When we found Desbarats we both knew it was perfect, untouched in 60 years, it had immense charm and possibilities. The region has spectacular scenery, is wonderfully peaceful, and the local people are helpful and welcoming.

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : Toulouse at 72 Kilometres Nearest Barpub : several locations at 10 Kilometres Nearest Train : St Gaudens at 40 Kilometres Nearest Motorway : at 40 Kilometres Nearest Restaurant : Several locations at 10 Kilometres Nearest Ski : Pyrennees at 75 Kilometres Nearest Beach : Biarritz at 243 Kilometres Car: necessary

Coast/Beach:

Biarritz, on the Atlantic coast, is about a two and a half hours drive from the house. If you are in search of water sports then within an hour you can reach the foothills of the Pyrénées where you will find canyoning, kayaking and rafting.

Skiing is within one hour and half. The Sauveterre school is 15 mins away, so the house is ideally located for parents visiting at half terms.

Travel:

A car is essential. The nearest airports are Toulouse (BA, Air France, EasyJet - 50 mins), Lourdes/Tarbes (Ryanair - 1hr 10 mins), Pau (Air France, cityjet from City airport - 1.5 hours) and Carcassone (Ryanair - 1.75 hours). From Calais it is a 10.5 hours drive - with children, we split the journey across 2 days and explore. The high-speed TGV train runs direct from Paris to Toulouse.

Distances:

The nearest Boulangerie is an 5 minutes drive. Two pretty market towns, L'Isle en Dodon and Boulogne-sur-Gesse, are within 15 minutes drive. They both have banks, supermarkets, pharmacies, restaurants, bars and a local market. Toulouse is less than a hour's drive away for metropolitan life. The international jazz festival in Marciac is 1 hour away (August). The Pyrénées are an hours drive. For the children, we are within an hours drive of two "Treetop" adventure centres.

Further Details:

The thriving market town of St.Gaudens, capital of the Comminges, is 30 minutes from the house. It has an extensive range of shopping from E. Leclerc (hypermarket), to traditional local shops. This region is a delight for the gastronome, with specialities of Cassoulet, confit de canard, foie gras and Madarin red wine. The Gorge de la Saves offers a delightful walk with plenty of picnic spots, and there are numerous small villages, local markets and family-run restaurants to explore. To the north lies the medieval town of Auch, an important stop on the Camino de Santiago de Compostela. It is a great place to spend a day wandering the old streets. And to the South, below St.Gaudens, you enter the Midi-Pyrénées where the landscape changes dramatically from the rolling green fields of Gascony to the steeply wooded foothills of the Pyrénées and on up into the dramatic peaks of the mountain range that rises to form the border with Spain. We are awaiting broadband in our area, but there is a local internet cafe.

Facilities

From the Owner

Though this is a rural situation benefiting from tranquility, local market towns are within easy reach with everything you need. The pool is very large indeed and is great for those who want to do some serious lengths. Due to its elevated position the house has views to the Pyrenees and the valley below. On a clear night it is possible to have a spectacular view of the stars due to the lack of light pollution. Last summer guests reported lying by the pool till three in the morning watching shooting stars!

Notes:

  • Notes on accommodation: There is a pond to the front of the property that anyone with small children should be aware of. September is a much overlooked month, but is consistently one of the best months of the year in our region. An open-sided barn provides a shaded area off the terrace and outside lights allow 'alfresco' dining in the evening. There are a bay and rosemary that can be used for cooking. A large grange on the other side of the house is ideal for playing table tennis and boules. The land around the house is very extensive and has been landscaped between the house and the pool. Areas to the right, and rear, of the house have yet to be formally landscaped but have wonderful views. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Linen and towels are included. A change of linen can be provided weekly by arrangement with the housekeeper. A welcome pack is also provided. Other: Both ground and upper hallways are very spacious with original tiled floor, sweeping oak staircase and modern Italian lights. They are decorated with artwork and a large roccoco style mirror
