About the Owner

Moving to France in 2005, we were not quite sure what to expect. What we found was a relaxed, layed back way of life we wished we had discovered earlier. However, we had to wait until the hard work of renovation was completed.

Coming from West Yorkshire where you call a spade a spade, learning to do the same in french is not so straight forward!! But the french are extremely friendly and helpful, and this has made our transition much easier.

Gill is the head interior designer, and puts all the ideas forward, while Hugh does as he is told! It seems to work.

Hugh & Gill live adjacent to the rental house and on hand to maintain the gardens and pool. They will be pleased to offer advice and suggestions when asked, but otherwise will remain discreet. We like our privacy too!

Since moving here, Gill has become very involved in the local pet refuge and works a few mornings each week. Over the years we have fostered and adopted some cats and a dog. All very friendly, but will be kept in our own garden during the guests stay.

Guestbook comments from the owner

'We have lived the tricolore dream.La Rochelle, citron presse, moules frites, louer les bicyclettes, etc. The house is beautiful. You've really thought of everything to make this a wonderful place to spend a week. It's been so relaxing.'

'Thank you both so much for a wonderful break and your fabulous northern hospitality. The house is gorgeous, a real home from home. Hope to be back.'

'Had a fab time- glorious weather. We enjoyed the pool and getting bread from the local boulangerie on the bikes. Had great time at Mervent, walking in the trees in the adventure park. Also hired boats in Marans which was excellent value, and the kids enjoyed it too.Good restaurants. Too much food and wine- GREAT holiday!'

'We have been holidaying in France for 6 years. This is, without doubt, the best house we have stayed in.Absolutely fantastic!!!'

It is lovely house and the facilities are excellent.

  • 4 of 5

We were a party of three couples who regularly holiday together. We enjoyed the house and pool but especially the kitchen which was very well equipped with more than we needed. Hugh and Gillian were great hosts, they were always available for any questions but never intrusive. We would recommend the house as a good holiday home in a nice area.

What a wonderful holiday and stay in a lovely property. Which lives up to the description given and of which is well equipped both in side and out. With outdoor kitchen and pool and plenty to see and do in the surrounding area.

Thank you Gill and Hugh for making our stay so pleasurable.

Great family holiday

  • 5 of 5

We've been on holiday in France over 20+ years and this by far is the most well maintained property we have ever stayed in. There was 10 of us in total 4 children and 6 adults and there was plenty of space for everyone in the house particularly with 4 large very clean bathrooms.

The outside space is superb with covered areas for getting out of the sun (38' on one day!!!) and loungers around the pool for those days when lazing is all you want to do. We had day trips to the coast and to the aquarium in La Rochelle and 10 mins away there is a great karting place for 7 to 70 year olds. There is a zoo just round the corner again only 10 mins away. Everyone had a great time and we were sorry to leave! ( we nearly didn't ,thanks Hugh for the jump leads!).

La Fleur De Lys

  • 4 of 5

Wonderful property with lots of character and really tastefully furnished. We stayed for 1 week and were a party of 7 including 2 young children.

Pool is excellent and really enjoyed the options around outside dining. Children enjoyed the various games stored for their use in the garage. Evening croquet with the adults was particularly popular.Throughout our stay Gill and Hugh were very helpful without being intrusive. Great location for visiting places of interest around Vendee, we really enjoyed our stay.

Brilliant family holiday

  • 5 of 5

Just arrived home after a wonderful holiday at the magnificent fleur de llys. We stayed for one week but wished it had been two weeks holiday at this gorgeous house which was decorated to a high standard with immaculate garden and grounds. The swimming pool was terrific and we so enjoyed the pool in the hot sunshine. We were a family of 7 (mum, dad, twins aged 22 months,a five year old together with grandma and grandpa) and we all had such a fantastic time at this lovely property. The house really did suit us as a family with spacious rooms downstairs and upstairs - great house plan for us. Although gill and huw live next door the only time we met was on our arrival to welcome us and very occasionally when huw watered the plants. If we did want to ask about the area and have advice huw was only to happy to help. All in all a fabulous time was had by all and it will take a lot to beat this lovely house and grounds. Thank you gill and huw, we look forward to seeing you again in the very near future.

very dissapointing

  • 1 of 5

the house is not 'magnificent' as described. The decor it tired, toilets dont flush properly and the lounge, kitchen and dining rooms are small for the number of beds. The house is next to a road which didnt offer the privacy we had hoped.

the owners live in the annex next door and they own a number of cats and dogs which wasnt mentioned in the introductions. shortly after arrival, one of their large dogs jumped up at my 6 year old son and scared him. My 10 year old is also very fearful of dogs and wouldnt be left alone. My daughter suffers cat allergies and we had to keep doors shut to stop cats entering. There are also a lot of rules! A long list is stuck on the fridge door which isnt very welcoming. We were told we had to turn certain lights off at night too. The children have to be supervised constantly and i wouldnt recommend this to families with young children.

we were really disappointed that the pictures and description didnt live up to expectations, my wife was really upset and the animals were a problem so we made the decision to find other accommodation and left the next day. i tried to get back into the house 3 days later but the gate was locked and the large dog was standing guard. We have emailed our grievances which the owners described as 'petty'.

Owner's Response: This client, who should not remain anonymous, Mr. David Mattinson, has not given a true account of his extremely short stay. His principle reason for writing such an angry review is that he had not done any research on the property, and was therefore disappointed to find that we lived adjacent to the property. If he had read the reviews and all other information, he would have known we lived on site. He would also have known we have a dog and some cats. They met the dog once, which was then confined. At no time before arrival did he mention any allergies or fears. I do not know any other rental property that does not have 'house rules'. It is a brief list of 5 do's and don'ts and other useful information. As to his other complaints, it can be clearly seen from the reviews of all of our other clients that his comments do not ring true and should be seen as a spiteful response his one day stay and his failure to discuss his issues before leaving. Finally, this property is extremely suitable for young children, but perhaps not if you wish to leave young children to play in the pool unsupervised! We always endeavour to meet all our clients needs, but you can't please everyone! We have 1 dog not dogs. The gate was not locked..it doesn't lock! The house is not tired...we keep up with decorations..maybe he considers antique furniture to be tired! Toilets do flush, showers great! This mr Mattinson left to go & stay in another property up the road....he left for no other reason because we live on site! Everything here said by Mr Mattinson is complete fabrication...you only have to read our reviews over the last 10 years!!!!!!
