About the property

T1 Apartment Miradouro

Tourism Board inspected and licensed (Alojament Local) – this upmarket yet very affordable property is situated right on the bus route, high up the hillside overlooking the quiet parish of Arco da Calheta, and the Atlantic Ocean. From there comes the name “Miradouro” which means viewpoint.

Easy access from street level means that you do not have to heave luggage up and down stairs. This also makes the property suitable to the elderly and very wheelchair friendly.

Stepping through the front gate you land on a huge veranda that stretches the full width of the front façade and wrap halfway around the sides of the main house. To the left, the BBQ area is directly linked to the kitchen side and to the right an intimate patio links with the lounge. From both these areas as well as the bedrooms, stunning views of the ocean and the wonderful sunsets can be enjoyed, perhaps over a glass of wine?

The sheltered outside entertainment and barbecue area on the veranda, has direct access to the kitchen. The kitchen is bright, roomy and well equipped with all the necessary appliances to make cooking gourmet meals a breeze.

The hallway leads off to the kitchen on the left and a spacious living area to the right with lounge and dining room. The lounge has luxurious genuine leather sofas and a large flat screen TV. Further down are the two sunny bedrooms, each with their own bathroom and private balcony, both with fantastic views.

A flight of stairs down and you are in the spacious communal lock up garage with remote controlled electric gate, roll up door and fully automatic washing machine for your laundry.

The one bedroom apartment can also be accessed from the garage as well as from its own private veranda.

The Villa and the semi detached apartment are rented out separately or together if you are a larger party requiring accommodation for 6 persons. A baby camping cot is available on request.

If you look at the size of Madeira, you can hardly imagine that this island has so much to offer! From many historical monuments, squares and streets in the capital of Funchal to enchanting gardens, picturesque villages, amazing landscapes, impressive volcanic caves, rugged coast lines, beautiful natural beaches and, last but not least, breathtaking views, there is so much to see that you will soon realize that one visit to Madeira just isn’t enough!

In Calheta's Marina you will find some of the best-equipped boats for big game fishing in the Mid-Atlantic with very experienced crews for your unforgettable fishing trip.

Madeira being ideally located on the migratory routes of big game fish, record size catches of Blue Marlin (with more than 1,000 lbs) and Big Eye Tuna are not uncommon during the season from June to September. Other species to be fished in the bountiful waters of Madeira are Marlin, Tuna, Wahoo, Barracuda, Bonito, Spearfish, Swordfish, and Dolphin

Shopping and local climate: Arco da Calheta is a very attractive village which has a social centre, cafes and a number of small supermarkets which sell everything you need.

About Kas vd Merwe - available on skype: kasmobile1

I do not live in Madeira full time yet, but hope to do so after my retirement. In the meantime I enjoy spending summer there and have been doing so since 2008 I love big game fishing and calheta is a wonderful venue to practise this sport.

Kas vd Merwe - available on skype: kasmobile1 purchased this apartment in 2010

Why Kas vd Merwe - available on skype: kasmobile1 chose Arco Da Calheta

During 2008 I visited Madeira (Calheta) for the first time and immediately fell in love with the mild climate, narural beauty and general ambience of the place.

I decided there and then that one day, I might want to retire to Madeira and ended up buying this property, after looking at and comparing it to many more, both in this area as well as in different locations on the Island and Funchal.

At least in my my mind, and within my budget, it came out tops

What makes this apartment unique

You may ask why this property......It has many unique benefits

Most important is the location Calheta - and then it's position within Calheta. (It is a well known fact that Calheta has the best climate on the whole island.)

It is on the right side of the island to view the most beautiful sunsets and equally beautiful sunrises.

The property is very close to the freeway, yet in a nice quiet area with wonderful views. It makes an ideal starting point to explore the rest of the island with day trips.

There is ample safe parking and the house and apartment can be combined to sleep up to 7 persons (Even more once work in the attic is finished)

It is close to the beach, the marina, and local shopping centres.

It is almost next door to the local hospital, so even medical emegencies are well catered for.

The apartment itself, although attached to the house by the shared garage, is totally private.

For a one bedroom apartment it is very spacious and the large windows create a nice bright and airy atmosphere. As a matter of fact, when the house is rented out during my favourite summer period, I live in the apartment myself!

Guestbook comments from the owner

We were in Madeira only last month (mid February)! We know the area quite well from previous trips to the island and we quite like to stay in Arco da Calheta itself as we think it has a lot to offer at more affordable prices in comparison to places to stay in Funchal city centre. We were a larger group last time we visited and therefore rented the entire property, both the apartment and the villa. The property is divided in 2 with the 2 bedroom villa above the 1 bedroom apartment! Both the villa and the apartment are spacious and bright as it benefits from large windows all around! The balconies are an added bonus if like us you enjoy eating out in the evenings. The views are fantastic and the caretaker who greets you on arrival is very friendly. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend this property to friends or family and will shortly be going back again (already booked for the end of April) and will go back as many times as we decide to visit Madeira.

The washing machine is in the garage and both that, and the garage itself is shared with the main house. Private access to the apartment is down a fairly steep driveway which is accessible with a wheelchair. I would however not recommend the apartment for physically handicapped people as the driveway may prove to be too steep A starter kit of coffee, tea, sugar, milk and basic spices is available on arrival. We offer a basic meet-and-greet service by our caretaker Paula during which she will take care of the formalities, receive the breakage deposit and demonstrate the operation of all the appliances etc . At a small additional charge she will show you around the immediate area, where to shop etc. Paula is also an excellent caterer and can provide snacks, pre-cooked meals etc by request. Should you require the services of a daily cleaning ladey, it can be arranged on your behalf.

Beautiful Apartment, Stunning Location

  • 5 of 5

Having stayed here previously, I looked forward to returning here. It feels like a second home now..... On arrival i was impressed by Vandas attention to detail in every aspect of the apartments presentation. The views were as stunning as i'd remembered. The two weeks passed in no time, aided by the comfort of the apartment. This really is one of the best presented apartments on the island and i'd highly recommend it to anyone considering a visit to Madeira. While being away from the hustle and bustle of the city, it is ideally placed to reach most parts of the island, including Funchal, in less than an hour.

Owner's Response: The opinion of this guest who has already stayed with us several times, and who has experienced the evolvement of our offering over time, to what it is today, once again give other potential guests, a very good idea of what to expect. Thank you Sir for being appreciative and for the compliment paid to our local caretaker - you will always be welcome at our place....whether for business or just a cup of coffee!

Apartment Miradouro has undergone a massive transformation since the last time i stayed. The new management have ensured that this apartment not only enjoyed an upgrade, but ensured that anyone looking for a T1in the Calheta region will look no further! I cannot believe the transformation, given that I use this as my second home each year.

Friendly and attentive management, a cute 'care package' on entry and exquisite views means you have a place to die for, if only for a week or two!!

You read the reviews which say 'It's out of the way, quiet etc..... yes, but that's what holds Calhetas charm! It's only 30-40 minutes from the main tourist drag, but central enough that everything you wish to see on the rock, is almost on your doorstep!!

This is my third year staying at Apartment Miradouro, and it really does feel like 'home from home'...... this is definitely a place that gets better with age!! ( Wish I could say the same for me!!)

Owner's Response: :) Thanks, Looking forward to your 2017 visit! As this guest confirmed above, I started renting this property a few years ago and although it offered very good value from the word go, it has been a work in progress ever since...... Combined with a very good local manager and cleaning staff, the place is kept in a very high state of cleanliness as well. I strongly believe that our offering is now simply the "Best Value for money" choice on the island!

A well equipped flat with spacious living room / kitchen.

  • 5 of 5

This apartment is ideal for 2 persons who want to experience a quieter part of Madeira. This sunny location faces SW over the Atlantic and is ideal for those who intend doing some walking on the the higher ground or just exploring the western end of the island. There are small shops and cafe/bars in the village and a larger supermarket in Calheta. A hired car is really essential but be warned some of the roads are very steep and twisty. Shame about the fires which devastated so much of the woodland in August 2016.

Owner's Response: :) Happy that you enjoyed your stay. I am sure that you will be back to Madeira.... One gets addicted to the peace and tranquility and the natural beauty of the island. Your observation and I quote: " This apartment is ideal for 2 persons who want to experience a quieter part of Madeira." is quite correct. Madeira as a whole, is not really a "party place" such as Ibiza etc. It is all about good food, good climate and absolutely beautiful nature, not to forget serious big game fishing for some of the biggest Blue marlin in the world. The 4th of July marlin World cup was now twice in a row won by boats operating out of Calheta.

Beautiful place, will be back!

  • 5 of 5

We arrived in the dark, which contributed to the magic. The hills were lit up and we instantly knew the view would be beautiful in the morning! The apartment was perfectly clean and had everything we needed for our stay. A nice bottle of wine was waiting for us, which we needed after driving the hills with a standard car from the airport. We were able to explore the whole island from this location driving both around the eastern point and across to Saint Vincent. Madeira is simply enchanting and a perfect place to holiday for the outdoorsy! We did have to use a heater on occasion to ward off the chill and humidity, as temperature in April was a little fresh.

We walked the levadas, tried the canyoning, and hiked between Pico Arieiro to Pico Ruivo (an absolute must for those that want to test their endurance and face their fears of heights). Everything was accessible from this location. Try the restaurant at the hotel which is adjacent to the beach in Calheta, we dined there twice and were pleased both times.

Don't forget to visit the Sugar Mill in Calheta and buy locally made Rum or Molasses. Lots to see and do, we will have to be back!

Our stay in the Miradouro in Calheta da arco from 21.2. to 5.3.2016

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderfull stay in Arco da Calheta. But you should have a car.

A nice young women met us at the meeting point and tooked us to the apartment miradouro. The name of the appartement was perfect , the view to the ocean is fantastic.

It´s a wonderful house, the flat, were we lived has an open kitchen in the living room, a bedroom and a bathroom. All rooms were clean and good equipped.

When we arrived, there were bread and butter, wine, jam and coffee for the first breakfast waiting for us.

But in not more than 5 minutes you can arrive the big supermarket in Calheta by car, where you can buy everything you need for self-sufficiency (every day, also on sunday) Unfortunately we were most of our time on road, to walk or to get to know the island and we used the nice flat only in the morning and in the evening.

One tip for those who make in the winter holiday there: don´t forget a warm sweeter or a flece-jacket. Although it is in the daytime summery warm, in the morning and evening time, when the sun has set, it´s a little cold.

Thank you for a very nice stay in your house !!! We can recommend this house warmly.

Perfect base for a hiking holiday!

  • 4 of 5

We had a wonderful, wonderful time in Madeira, and will most certainly be back.

We loved the location of the apartment in Arco da Calheta, approx. 45 minutes drive from Funchal, as we prefer to be out in the country a bit more. The view from the balcony is absolutely stunning, and we spent many a content late afternoon out there with a cup of coffee, enjoying the sunset.

As for infrastructure, there are a supermarket and a pharmacy about 10minutes' drive away in Calheta, and there are a few restaurants/bars on the seafront and in the neighbouring villages (though we didn't try any of them).

We found our location a good one for exploring all corners of the island - you do need a car, but there are very reasonably priced hire cars to be had.

The apartment mostly has everything you need; I expect most people will eat out. We cooked ourselves every night and, apart from a chopping board (which we have bought and left behind), there was everything we required to do that.

We were there mid-February - it did get chilly in the apartment once the sun had gone down, as it is geared up for hot weather with its tiled floors; but there was a little radiator which was sufficient to make the bedroom reasonably comfortable in temperature.

Check-in was smooth; the local manager of the apartment explained all the appliances etc to us and was available for queries/help had we needed it, which we didn't.

We had a brilliant time, and will most certainly be back!

Founded in 1572, the parish of Arco da Calheta is set between the mountains and got its name from the surrounding hills and its proximity to the parish of Calheta. After the discovery of the island this parish was one of the first to be submitted to huge agricultural explorations, giving origin to extensive lands with noble houses, chapels and cultivated areas. The population in 2001 was 3,241, its density is 129.6/km² and the area is 23 km². Arco da Calheta is the largest parish in Calheta in both population and area.

It is a 40 minute drive to Funchal airport and only 25 minutes to Funchal city. We are surrounded by a variety of levada, mountain and coastal walks and a new golf course if currently under construction a 20 minute drive away.

About 3km away, is a marina and the Calheta beach resort, with imported golden Sahara sand, a sheltered swimming area.

Madeira is known for an excellent climate all year round, breathtaking sceneries and world record size big game fishing.

Other Activities: Marlin fishing, levada walks and regular cultural events and feasts
