If you look at the size of Madeira, you can hardly imagine that this island has so much to offer! From many historical monuments, squares and streets in the capital of Funchal to enchanting gardens, picturesque villages, amazing landscapes, impressive volcanic caves, rugged coast lines, beautiful natural beaches and, last but not least, breathtaking views, there is so much to see that you will soon realize that one visit to Madeira just isn’t enough!
In Calheta's Marina you will find some of the best-equipped boats for big game fishing in the Mid-Atlantic with very experienced crews for your unforgettable fishing trip.
Madeira being ideally located on the migratory routes of big game fish, record size catches of Blue Marlin (with more than 1,000 lbs) and Big Eye Tuna are not uncommon during the season from June to September. Other species to be fished in the bountiful waters of Madeira are Marlin, Tuna, Wahoo, Barracuda, Bonito, Spearfish, Swordfish, and Dolphin
Shopping and local climate: Arco da Calheta is a very attractive village which has a social centre, cafes and a number of small supermarkets which sell everything you need.
I do not live in Madeira full time yet, but hope to do so after my retirement. In the meantime I enjoy spending summer there and have been doing so since 2008 I love big game fishing and calheta is a wonderful venue to practise this sport.
Kas vd Merwe - available on skype: kasmobile1 purchased this apartment in 2010
During 2008 I visited Madeira (Calheta) for the first time and immediately fell in love with the mild climate, narural beauty and general ambience of the place.
I decided there and then that one day, I might want to retire to Madeira and ended up buying this property, after looking at and comparing it to many more, both in this area as well as in different locations on the Island and Funchal.
At least in my my mind, and within my budget, it came out tops
You may ask why this property......It has many unique benefits
Most important is the location Calheta - and then it's position within Calheta. (It is a well known fact that Calheta has the best climate on the whole island.)
It is on the right side of the island to view the most beautiful sunsets and equally beautiful sunrises.
The property is very close to the freeway, yet in a nice quiet area with wonderful views. It makes an ideal starting point to explore the rest of the island with day trips.
There is ample safe parking and the house and apartment can be combined to sleep up to 7 persons (Even more once work in the attic is finished)
It is close to the beach, the marina, and local shopping centres.
It is almost next door to the local hospital, so even medical emegencies are well catered for.
The apartment itself, although attached to the house by the shared garage, is totally private.
For a one bedroom apartment it is very spacious and the large windows create a nice bright and airy atmosphere. As a matter of fact, when the house is rented out during my favourite summer period, I live in the apartment myself!
We were in Madeira only last month (mid February)! We know the area quite well from previous trips to the island and we quite like to stay in Arco da Calheta itself as we think it has a lot to offer at more affordable prices in comparison to places to stay in Funchal city centre. We were a larger group last time we visited and therefore rented the entire property, both the apartment and the villa. The property is divided in 2 with the 2 bedroom villa above the 1 bedroom apartment! Both the villa and the apartment are spacious and bright as it benefits from large windows all around! The balconies are an added bonus if like us you enjoy eating out in the evenings. The views are fantastic and the caretaker who greets you on arrival is very friendly. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend this property to friends or family and will shortly be going back again (already booked for the end of April) and will go back as many times as we decide to visit Madeira.
This villa is about 45 minutes drive from Funchal airport through a series of road tunnels. Following the instructions, we met a very helpful agent, Vanda, at a bar near the villa, who led us to the villa. The 'welcome pack' of essentials was great, including the wine! The villa consisted of a dining kitchen, lounge, family bathroom, twin bedroom and en-suite double bedroom all on one level. The free super fast WiFi was a real bonus as the TV only had BBC World & Sky International for English speakers amongst the many foreign satellite channels. The rooms were spacious and both bedrooms and living room afforded balconies with fantastic views over the bay of Calheta and surrounding hills and village. There is a lower floor apartment, which was occupied by another couple, but we hardly ever heard or saw them. They had use of the property's garage & we parked 50 yards away at the side of the road with no problem. The use of a car is essential here as it is very hilly and over a mile to the supermarket near Calheta beach. The man-made beach at Calheta was great with a bar/restaurant etc even free WiFi. We visited the beach on alternate days and explored the island on the others, which was easy to do as the island is not very big. We visited the capital Funchal, went to Porto Moniz in the North after riding on a fantastic cable car on the way at Achadas da Cruz and went Lavada walking to Rabacal and the 25 Fountains. For us, a week in Madeira was about enough, but the island is beautiful and the villa was perfect with all the amenities needed. It was like home from home and after a day out it was good to come back to, where we felt relaxed and comfortable. We used to sit on the balcony for an hour or two watching the sun go down below the horizon of the quiet Atlantic Ocean, sipping red wine or the local beer. Well recommended.
Had a wonderful months stay at the Villa. It has everything you could want. Very comfortable for 4 people. The wrap around terrace means you get sun all day and the photos dont do the amazing view any justice. I'm going to miss waking up to that view every morning.
Some advice I think car is essential. Very hilly. I seen some of the bus stops in the area but never used them. One of the neighbours is a taxi driver and it's about 5€ for a trip into the main town of Calheta where the beach is. Overall great value for money. Brilliant owner Kas and a property manager that's happy to help with anything.
Wonderful apartment, location and views. Just like home everything for a super time.
Definitely need a car.
Christmas time is truly magical on Madeira especially Alco da Calheta.
From the very first email enquiry, our booking was handled with professionalism and care and it is obvious that Kas (the owner) wants you to enjoy the villa and have a wonderful time on the beautiful island of Madeira. The villa is in a superb location and watching the sunset every evening was the highlight of our day. Kas gave excellent instructions about the property and how to arrive there from the airport, and we were met by the property manager Vanda at a little café in the village. She was extremely helpful on arrival at the villa and explained how everything worked and where to go for provisions etc. She was also on call to help with any queries during our stay. The villa itself is spacious, clean and well stocked with everything you could need, including kitchen equipment for cooking and extra blankets for the colder winter nights. There is plenty of outside space and furniture to have a barbeque, dinner or a drink and to enjoy the views out to sea. We used the double bedroom for our stay and the bed was comfortable and shower in the en-suite was hot and powerful. All you need to do is book, go and enjoy and we would not hesitate to recommend Villa Miradouro to anyone, young or old. As per the previous reviewer, we found the villa to be superb value in a location second to none - thank you Kas and Vanda, we hope to be back again soon!
My husband and I stayed at Villa Miradouro in Arco da Calheta for five weeks and found it to be a wonderful experience. While the Villa itself is true to its listing, it is so much more because of its location. Perched above a picturesque town, and overlooking the ocean, we never tired of sitting on one of the many balconies and savoring the warm sun, clean air, and local sounds. Since we had a nice long stay, we were able to explore every part of the island at our leisure and our location in Arco da Calheta positioned us to do that. We walked on many levadas and were thrilled to have one located just above the road from Villa Miradouro. The weekly farmers market in Prazeres was a treat that yielded all the passion fruit we could ever want, fresh vegetables, and delicious home-baked goods. Having a nicely appointed kitchen allowed us to pack picnic lunches for our walks, make some dinners in the evenings, and have coffee and local pastries in the morning. Villa Miradouro has to be the best value on the island! Thank you Kas for sharing your lovely home with us.
Everything we required for a self catering holiday was available. Fantastic morning sunrises and sea views from the bedroom.
Could not ask for more.
Vanda the caretaker was most helpful with all our queries and especially when we needed to find out about a replacement car after our accident.
We enjoyed the very quiet, relaxing position high above the main square and the friendly welcome at Christmas mass although we are not Catholic.
It made our holiday
One thing the cockerells wake early In the morning, we enjoyed them.
We have no reservations in recommending this holiday apartment.
