Gite in La Bastide de Serou, Ariege, France - Large Secure Pool And Gardens, Countryside Valley Only 3kms From All Amenities
A peaceful and spacious property, in a green and rolling Pyrenean valley. With all amenities at 3kms away (grocery stores, bakery, butchers, bank) and the regions capital city of Foix at 20kms with hypermarkets etc, we consider ourselves to be rural and yet still with all facilities close to hand. Walking, cycling, horse riding and skiing opportunities are all on the doorstep, as is the chance to simply relax by the heated pool, in our own child-friendly gardens, or by the wood burning stove. The area as a whole is steeped in natural history with prehistoric caves, and Cathar castles all around, plus (of course) the Pyrenees mountain range. The areas capital town of Foix is a short 15 minute drive away, hosting it's imposing castle and abundance of restaurants, bars and shopping. The tax free shopping of Andorra is just over an hour away.
New for 2011, we have installed a new solar/wood powered heating system wich provides all hot water - including for the pool!

About the Owner
We are a family of 3 who spent several years traveling and experiencing life in different places and cultures before deciding to settle here in the stunning Ariege.
We bought the property from a friend in 2015 who is amazing and very good looking and is currently helping us with all aspects of the gite bookings.

"I really look forward to coming next time, I cannot remember the last time I relaxed this much, THANKYOU." R Norris, Bath UK
"We were looking for some quiet and calm time with the kids, and here, sat close to the fire, we had really wonderful hours. We finished 2009 in this beautiful home and started 2010 playing in the snow, and this was an amazing day with the kids. Thankyou for sharing this place with us as qwe say in Catalan 'Moltes gracies i felia 2010!!!" Xavier and Teresa, Barcelona

Wonderful holiday, stunning Gite,beautiful area
The gite has been beautifully renovated with natural wood and stone and we loved it and the open plan layout. The Gite was very clean and well looked after and well stocked with equipment/DVDs/books and the pool was excellent - particularly great when lit up at night. Our teenagers had great fun in the pool and in the boat and we loved our time relaxing in the Gite. There is so much to do in this part of France, we loved going to the Markets at Mirepoix, Foix and St Girons and we enjoyed trips to St Girons, Foix, Carcassonne (the latter is fabulous, very busy with tourists like ourselves but well worth the trip). We also enjoyed a trip to Andorra, trips to the Riviere Souterraine (the underground caves which were amazing) and to the Ferme des Reptiles which although small is charming and the animals are looked after very well. Careful the massive tortoises can be a bit friendly - especially if they are hungry and you are wearing flipflops. The Mar D'Azil tour is interesting and it's great driving through the tunnel at night when it is lit up. Although we had mixed weather - we had about a week of lovely hot sun but also a week of cool and rainy weather which was a shame but there was so much to do that we had a wonderful time. Roman, Camille and Louison were very welcoming and helpful when we were arranging the booking and during our holiday and were on hand if we had any queries or questions. Camille also kindly sent our daughter's sunglasses back to England (which we left by the pool) - thank you for everything. We would highly recommend the Gite and the location - there is still so much that we didn't get time to do - next time
We had an amazing stay here and would highly recommend. The gite is in a beautiful location and the weather was super hot. It had everything we needed including lots of games, books and DVDs for the children. The highlight for us was the pool and garden. Although the pool is shared with the friendly owners, we always had it to ourselves! The garden had trampoline, slide, swing etc which was ideal. Comfortable rooms and many an hour spent on the terrace. Thank you. The Judges
We stayed at the beautiful Chateau carriage house for the October half term with my partner and our 8 year old son.
the weather was fantastic averaging around 23 degrees int he afternoon and we only saw rain on one afternoon the whole time we were there, the next day blue clear skies were back.
The Gite is absolutely lovely with every mod cons you could need ie: log burner, dishwasher, microwave, iron, swimming pool etc etc.
The new owners Camille and Romain were perfect hosts who live next door.
They were never intrusive but were still on hand if we needed any help or information about the area.
the village of Nescus is quiet and secluded but the town of Foix is only 15 mins away by car.A stunning town with a beautiful Chateau in the centre and plenty of places to eat out.
There is plenty to do nearby from old Chateaus on hill tops like the stunning Château de Montségur to canoeing, horse riding and Subterranean caves.
Sequoia Vertigo was a 30 minute drive for excellent tree climbing for all ages.
We highly recommend this property,it was one of the best holidays we have had in France and wouldn't hesitate at returning.
Beautiful, quiet location with lovely pool
We had a super week in this delightful gite. Our hosts were incredibly warm and welcoming and eager to make our stay as enjoyable as possible. The large salt-water pool is a delight and we enjoyed many hours relaxing there. We also loved the open plan layout of the gite and attractive decking area with barbecue. The area is beautiful and this particular location is a gem. During our week, we enjoyed several low and high-level walks, whitewater rafting from Foix and a trip to the nearby caves. In all, highly recommended.
A little slice of heaven
My husband and I, along with our 20 month old daughter, spent 10 fantastic days in this wonderful gite at the end of September 2014. We had visited the Pyrenees before in Autumn and loved it although we had never explored this area. There was so much to do in the surrounding areas, just a short drive away. Beautiful towns to visits, amazing walks with very rewarding 360 views, a lovely lake to swim in and very interesting caves.
The gite itself was well equipped, clean, and simply perfect for us. Having the 2 bedrooms was great and it was a nice surprise to see that the main bedroom looked much bigger than in the photo. We also loved the open plan style of the living areas. A great space for a little person to run about...... That was when we could drag her away from the garden/pool. The outdoor space was superb. Lots of grass for running around, a great trampoline and a massive, well maintained, swimming pool that was most welcoming even in late September.
The owners was extremely helpful. The welcome bottle of wine and beers were much appreciated :) Although they live in the house attached to the gite it always felt extremely private.
In a nutshell, we would highly recommend this rental property to: anyone who is looking for a relaxing time, nature lovers, hill walkers, families with children of any age (I forgot to mention the DVD library!!!). We would love to return one day soon. Many thanks for a very memorable holiday!!!

We spent 2 weeks in this beautiful property nestled at the bottom of mountains this summer, our 2 boys aged 7 & 4 were safe and happy exploring the gardens, and particlulary enjoyed hunting and picking fruit and nuts from the trees! The (huge) pool is safely fenced and the gardens carefully tended. We spent sunny days laying by the pool as our youngest learned to swim and our eldest practiced his diving, listening to the church bells next door and the cow bells in the field behind us. And evenings were spent drinking wine on the decking looking at the stars and bat spotting at dusk. It is a truly idyllic setting.
The owners are a pleasure, exactly the right level of interaction, friendly chatter and advice, but allowing us also to feel as though we had the place entirely to ourselves! We really hope to stay in touch. Our boys were made to feel welcome and spent a lot of time hovering around the owners gate talking to Henderson the dog and asking relentless questions!! This is a beautiful part of France, in easy reach of so many places, we had some wonderful days out, all of which were based on advice from the owners Sean and Laura or the very complimentary guest book!
The Gite is fantastic, very nice for our boys to have their own bathroom! Because of the clever layout and openplan setting, as a family we felt close all of the time but all had our own space, and on rainy evenings, the log burner was very welcome and cosy!
We recommend this property whole heartedly.

“We have been lucky to live in the Ariege region for a two years, and for us this house and it's location was a 'coup de fourdre'. It's location and proportions are outstanding, and the quality of renovation are exceptional. The gardens provide the perfect environment for our 8 year old son to enjoy and grow in.”

“Our children and those of our guests enjoy the freedom this relaxed, rural setting gives whether its riding bikes down the lane or exploring the gardens and area. The 4 distinct seasons we enjoy are also something we are lucky to experience every year. The pool offers a great focus for summertime, either for exercise or just relaxing in and watching the eagles and kites soar in the blue sky above. The change autumn brings makes walking in this area at its best in those months, every day the scenery changes and the heat of summer eases. In winter the Pyrenees become an international focus for all manner of winter sports, from skiing to snow-shoeing. Spring brings the burst of life back to the woodlands and fields all around with cuckoos, wood-peckers, and orchids popping up all around.”

We have mature walnuts, figs, plumbs, apples, hazelnuts, greengages, pears, peaches and cherries all growing - help yourselves! (The woods we are in also offer more delicacies including cep and morrille mushrooms.) The gardens also have children's swing, climbing frame and trampoline, and are secure.
