About the property

Villa in Makrigialos, Lassithi, South East Crete, Greece - Located Very Close to Sandy Blue Flag Beach

Against an impressive mountain backdrop and overlooking the sparkling waters of Makrigialos Bay, Grapevines is a complex of 20 luxury, 3 storey self-catering townhouses, clustered around a large private courtyard and floodlit 20m swimming pool. Our property is set back from the road on the western side of the complex and includes a private panoramic balcony leading from the lounge on the middle floor and a large sun terrace with pergola on the top floor, both affording mid-day shade and stunning sunset views of the bay in the evening. A smaller balcony overlooks the pool, allowing early-risers a view of the sun climbing between the mountains. The contemporary open-plan lounge and dining area adjoin a modern, fully fitted kitchen which are connected to the ground floor bedrooms and the third floor sun deck via an elegant spiral staircase. Air-conditioning is provided in the main rooms. Utilities costs are inclusive. Recently installed solar water heating ensures you won't run out of hot water for showers! About Ian Newsham

Michele and I are both recently (very recently!) retired teachers. We have lived and worked in South Wales and Devon and for the past 25 years in Yorkshire.

We have 2 children (both girls) and one grand-daughter plus 3 cats. Not sure which cause the most trouble!

Ian Newsham purchased this villa in 2008

Why Ian Newsham chose Lasithi

We originally purchased our villa/townhouse at Grapevines purely as an investment but from the first time we came out to Crete (just to put up curtain poles and hang curtains) we fell in love with it. It's not just that the villa is wonderfully positioned and equipped and that the pool is the best we've ever swum in, but the whole area draws us back time and time again. Makrigialos is a delightful village, the people are so welcoming, the beaches are probably the best on Crete and the food is delicious everywhere you go. What more do you need?

What makes this villa unique

The villa is equipped to a very high standard and it and the whole site is so well maintained it still looks brand new. This is partly due to our good fortune to have Rosemary and Nico who manage the site on behalf of the owners . They live next door so are always around to check that everything is as it should be. Rosemary, who is English, manages the bookings, ensures the linen is changed and also meets guests on arrival giving them as much information as they can absorb. She knows everyone in the village and all the best places to go, whether you want to do some walking, sight-seeing, swimming or just eating. Nico, who is Greek, manages the grounds and takes a great deal of pride in ensuring the pool is kept spotless. He also owns some very large greenhouses and his tomatoes are awesome!

Great, relaxing holiday destination

  • 4 of 5

With all the amenities you could want and the pool steps away from the front door, Ian's 2 bed apartment provides great accommodation In Crete. The pool is at the heart of a small, friendly complex that is close to the town and the beaches of Makrygialos, and there are loads of great recommendations of restaurants, beach bars and places to visit at the apartment. In just a week, we ate well, visited the beautiful mountains, swung in hammocks on a deserted beach, swum in the sea and watched the amazing sunsets - a great place to relax!

Owner's Response: So pleased (but not surprised!) that these guests had a great holiday, as everyone who comes here does! They also added in our visitors' book, that next time they would be coming for 2 weeks, which tells my wife and I as owners, that we are probably getting most things right! ...It also reflects the fact, that our descriptions of amenities & facilities, live up to guests' expectations & findings: which is just what we like to hear :)

Lovely, Clean and Spacious Villa

  • 4 of 5

We had a lovely 10 day holiday in this villa. Having stayed at Grapevines previously, we were familiar with the area and complex, and were looking forward to returning. We weren't disappointed. The villa was very clean and well equipped, and there was plenty of space for the 6 of us. There was a heatwave while we were over, so the air conditioning was a blessing and so was the shade on the balconies, to get some respite from the sun. Rosemary was as helpful and friendly as ever, and the local restaurants were just as good as we remembered them from our previous stay. Ian was very responsive whenever we emailed prior to the holiday, and answered any questions we had comprehensively. He also gave us lots of info about the area, beaches and restaurants etc. Thanks for a lovely stay and I'm sure we will return at some point in the future.

Owner's Response: Thanks for taking the time to write a great review Jane. We are always pleased to hear that our guests enjoy our place as much as we do and that we have been able to enhance their stay with the information we send them. With such a wide choice of places to go on holiday, we must be doing something right if guests are returning. We know it's a great place to come for a relaxing break but it's still nice to hear it from other people. Look forward to you staying with us again. Ian

Lovely villa holiday in the Crete sunshine

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in this lovely villa at the beginning of October 2015. What a delightful place to stay! The villa and small villa complex are immaculate, and looked after by Rosemary who lives next door to the complex. The villa is very modern and well equipped.

Grapevines is situated on the edge of Makrigialos , a quiet village on the south eastern coast of Crete. There is an abundance of good restaurants in Makrigialos, some of which are close by the villa and others which are by the main beach overlooking the sea. They are all very good value for money. We especially enjoyed having lunch at a restaurant on Green Beach (Diaskari Beach) which is within walking distance of the villa.

We used Makrigialos as a base for exploring the local area and going further afield by car. Driving is easy and the roads are quiet.

This is an ideal spot for a relaxing and sunny holiday. Thank you to Ian and Michelle for letting us stay in their villa. We look forward to returning before too long.

Grapevines - A little piece of heaven on earth

  • 5 of 5

After a long day of travelling it was a pleasure to arrive into the Villa in the very early hours of the morning. Rosemary left us a welcome pack which was beneficial given our time of arrival into the accommodation. The villa was spacious with lots of handy utensils and was spotlessly clean and tidy on our arrival. AC was efficient, however, we had three very windy days during our stay and we simply left the mosquito nets on and the windows open. The multiple balconies in the villa proved extremely useful if you wished to eat or drink either in the sun or in the shade. Within two or three steps from the villa's front door there was a large and very clean pool with comfortable sun loungers and umbrellas for shade. The villa was in an excellent location with a small supermarket only minutes from the complex and all bars, restaurants and shops were al within easy walking distance. The complex was very clean and tidy with well tended gardens. Rosemary was an excellent host and was there to offer advice if needed but did not intrude on our holiday in any way. Her husband Nico ensured that the pool was cleaned every day. We had not been to Crete for a few years, however, having visited Grapevines with my sister in law and her husband in June/July we will certainly return again the future and we would most definitely recommend the villa and Grapevines to anyone looking for peaceful, relaxing and comfortable accommodation. Thanks also to Ian for sending excellent driving instructions from Heraklion to the accommodation. All in all a five star holiday.

Wonderful villa in a beautiful location

  • 5 of 5

We agree with the previous reviewer, we would like to keep this place a secret but that would be unfair. The villa is wonderful, the pool larger than expected from the web photos. We left Gatwick on a cold wet October morning and arrived in Heraklion a few hours later to blue skies and a temperature of 27. We picked up our hire car organised by Ian and were soon on our way to Grapevines, we did think maybe we had gone the wrong way a couple of times, but no, the directions were spot on and arrived at a Grapevines to be greeted by Rosemary who showed us around the villa. The villa has everything you need, plenty of places to sit and relax both inside and out. We feel this villa is set on the best side of the complex there is always both sun and shade. We loved walking down to the very pretty harbour and the beaches and explored the area by car. We visited Pifki a lovely village in the mountains and the towns of Sitea and Lerepetra, we preferred Sitea out of the two towns and sat in the harbour watching kingfishers then had lunch on the beach. There are many restaurants in the village and harbour of Makrigilos and tried out quite a few all very nice and very reasonable. The scenery is wonderful and have enjoyed every minute of our 2 week holiday. The weather has been really good as well - this has been a very relaxing peaceful holiday and would recommend this villa, it is well maintained and of a high standard, the whole complex is lovely Rosemary and Nico do a good job looking after the villas, pool and garden. Booking with the owner Ian could not have been easier, he was very friendly and answered all our queries promptly. Wifi here is very good, so had everything we could ask for. We hope to return.

Owner's Response: It's so satisfying when our guests are really happy with their stay in our villa and that everything has worked out well for them ..... including the weather, which we can only hope is as good as it usually is. We do try and make booking, travelling and staying as straightforward as possible and will always try to answer questions as truthfully as we can .... we've not had a disappointed visitor yet and work hard to make sure we don't. Thanks to our guests for writing a lovely review and for their custom this year. As you said, hope to see you again ..... the months outside of the school holidays offer really good value! Thanks again. Ian and Michele.

fantastic holiday

  • 5 of 5

I am slightly loathe to write this review as this resort, and accommodation is a hidden gem and I don't want it to be discovered so we can enjoy it again!

If you like laid back resorts, with a section of restaurants (although serving similar menus) beautiful beaches and a luxury 'home from home' villa, this is the place for you.

From the minute we booked, Ian was so friendly, organised and helpful. The directions were spot on and once we arrived and were greeted by Rosemary, we were given a thorough tour of our wonderfully furnished and clean accommodation. she recommended things to do in the area as well. We didn't actually cook once as the restaurants were all such good value.

The beaches are quiet, clean and the sea is crystal clear. There wasn't alot to do outside

the area but that suited as and our boys (10 and 13) as we spent the days on the beaches or walking down to the harbour for drinks, crepes and ice creams.

Thank you Ian for letting us use your house, we hope to come back soon.

Owner's Response: Although all of our guests have made similar comments previously, this is the first time that anyone has posted a review on the Owners Direct site ... it's clearly something we need to encourage other guests to do! We are so glad that everyone had a great holiday and as "Helsbelsjoe" has kindly commented, we do try to make everything as straightforward as we can, from enquiries, through booking to car hire, whilst Rosemary our on-site manager makes sure that your stay in Grapevines is what you want it to be, from a laid back "do nothing" holiday, to something a bit more energetic. Thanks again for taking the time to write your review and we would obviously welcome you back next year! Ian and Michele

The nearest beach (5 minutes walk) which stretches around the bay to Makrigialos harbour is one of the best on the island and has been awarded Blue Flag status. It is sandy and provides safe bathing for swimmers of all ages and abilities as it is sheltered and slopes very gently. The whole stretch of this coast offers beaches with easy access and secluded coves.

Makrigialos is accessed from Heraklion airport, approximately 120km. Car hire is recommended but a taxi service is available and I can arrange these for you. There is a petrol station in Makrigialos.

Makrigialos is a short walk away (10 minutes) but there is a well equipped supermarket and many excellent restaurants within just a few minutes walk. Makrigialos has a good range of small shops, supermarkets cafes and tavernas as well as a bank, doctor, dentist and pharmacy.

Ierapetra is the nearest large town and is a pleasant 30 minute drive along the coast. Sitia is slightly further away (35km) on the north coast but again is a delightful drive.

Further Details:

Makrigialos is located in Lasithiou Province and is ideally situated to explore this area. To the north west is Agios Nikolaos, a very lively and popular resort from where you can visit the island of Spinalonga.

If your interest is in archeology there are many sites of interest, ranging from the ruins of the Minoan town at Gournia and the palace at Zakros to Roman, Venitian and Turkish influences across the region. The monastery at Moni Toplou, although geared to tourism is well worth a visit. There are archaeological museums at Ierapetra and Sitia.

For those who enjoy walking the gorge walks are a must and one of the best known starts at the village of Pefki.
