A lovely setting in a beautiful part of France

  • 4 of 5

Well equipped and with very supportive hosts/owners. The pool is a real bonus especially for children. James and Fran's local knowledge is brilliant. On wet days Chateau Cottage feels a little damp but when the sun shines the whole set-up feels magical.

Beautiful location, well equipped properties

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed at numerous self-catering properties in France over the years, and think that James and Francine's are probably the best we have come across. They're well equipped, immaculately clean and only a few steps away from the lovely heated pool. We stayed as two families, and the set-up was ideal. Be aware that the two properties are rather different from each other, and make sure that you get the right one to suit your needs (the two-bedroomed is better suited for outdoor eating, for example.) James and Francine are helpful hosts, and are happy to book restaurants etc. Of these, check out La Morliere - it has stunning views.

Our Week in the Vendée

  • 5 of 5

The gite was even nicer than shown in the site photographs and fully equipped with everything needed for our stay The swimming pool was really lovely and well maintained.

James and Francine were friendly, helpful but not intrusive.

A surprise was that the water supply was from a well and James and Francine advised us to buy Eau de Source bottled water for drinking - very cheap from the local supermarket. The water was always hot for showers etc. in fact the hottest water I have ever encountered.

The boulangerie in the village is now closed but it's a very short drive to collect baguettes and croissants from the next village for breakfast. Really lovely.

The countryside around is absolutely beautiful.

James and Francine have 3 lovely boys and the eldest, Alfie keeps hens. He gave us 6 to start our week and we enjoyed them so much that we asked for 12 to take home.

A book in the gite recommends places and restaurants.to visit and I highly recommend Bistro André in La Rochelle and the restaurant by the lake near Chantonnay.

I would definitely recommend Chateau Cottage gite. However, I would advise that the single beds are not suitable for heavy adults. My husband and I chose the twin room and my daughter had the double bed. The slats supporting the mattress on my husband's bed came out of their slots during the night. I am of average size and had no problem.

We had a great holiday.

Green fields and fresh eggs!

  • 5 of 5

We had an excellent holiday in Eglise and Chateau with our extended family. The owners were very welcoming and the houses were delightful -well equipped and maintained. Best of all were the outdoor facilities, so suitable for families: our grandchildren loved the pool, football field, table tennis and boules/petanque areas.... and the freedom to run round safely. The fresh eggs from the chickens were also appreciated! There is plenty to do in the area, whether locally or at the coast or inland, whatever the weather... beaches, zoo, canals, play parks and play farms, restaurants, plans d'eau... lots to enjoy!

Location

From the Owner

We brought the property as a result of its uniqueness and love at first sight and our numerous clients comment on the tranquility of the setting. It has a very unique setting as our property was originally the chateau for the church and is set within a very private courtyard with now passing traffic but close to many amenities. We have fantastic views over the surrounding countryside and the buildings are of architectural significance all set within two and a half hectares.

Having previously holidayed in France ourselves we found a number of places we stayed in were lacking. We have endeavoured to tick all the boxes and provide everything you could want for the perfect holiday. We are conveniently located for everything and have a great supply of local information for you upon arrival. One guest referred to our setting as being like Camelot such is the magical setting.
