Top Traveller Review

About the Owner

My wife and I love to be inspired and travel is a big part what makes us tick. I am a Garden Designer and my wife is a Jewellery Designer. We are parents and both love travel, art and design. We also have a deep passion for rural Spain, it's culture and in particular, Andalucia. We love the dramatic landscape, the food , the culture, the tranquility and of course the sunshine. We love to travel and the sense of adventure within the fact that Morocco is just a short hop away from here. We find the Moorish influences in the region fascinating and deeply inspiring . As such, we love to take the ferry over to Tangier and travel to the Riff mountains. Adventure is never very far away .... as is our relaxing pool .

Lovely Spanish house with stunning views!

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from a wonderful 2 week stay at this beautiful Spanish house. Bruce, the owner, was very helpful and patient during the booking process and Erika, the housekeeper, during our stay was friendly and always available even trying to assist when the battery in our hire car went flat!. (Note re. parking - we found it easier to park the car on the main road, Calle Larga, and use the steps down at the top of this road which lead to the end of the street where the house is based).

The house itself is rather lovely, set on 3 floors. Each bedroom comfortably furnished, one has it's own balcony. The views from the terrace where we spend most of our time leading off the lounge are to die for! We were pleasantly surprised that you can see the Rock of Gibraltar which had been obscured by distant clouds on the first few days we were there. All the other facilities of the house were also lovely, the kitchen kitted out with everything you would need should you wish to dine in. We enjoyed the pool area with the beautiful planting and whilst the pool was a bit cool it became a firm friend on the hottest days during our second week.

Gaucin is sooo pretty, there were plenty of tapas bars and a couple of restaurants, Unfortunately the restaurant at the end of the street where the house is located was closed, but we did dine at La Fructuosa and El Lateral both served delicious meals. We also ate many times at the tapas bars in the town - all good food and very reasonably priced. There is a gem of a restaurant called Venta San Juan located on the other side of a town called Altogacin not far from Gaucin - which served traditional Spanish food and is based near a river where you can swim if you wish.

Gibraltar and Ronda were both easily accessible and very well worth a visit. Our beach days were mainly spent at a beach in Sabinallis (a short drive once down from the mountains). We visited Tarifa where you can watch all the kite and wind surfers then onward to Bolonia - also with great beaches! In Sabinallis we found a beach restaurant which did provide beds for 20 euros (there were 5 in our party) however there are many that don't although you can buy beach brollies and chairs for a small cost if you want to.

All of us, even my sprite 81 year old mum, loved the house, Gaucin and all it offered. We would very much recommend a stay here if you are looking for Spain without the crowds. We hope to return one day.

Beautiful House in Spanish white village

  • 5 of 5

The house is lovely and very well equipped, with amazing views in particular from the balcony off the living room where we ate virtually all of our meals. It has multiple levels and a terrific pool at the lowest area surrounded by hundreds of plants.

Gaucin itself is very quiet. Zorro's, just up the road, became our local with its 1 euro beers and free cacahueta (peanuts).

And if you can, get Maria (info is at house) to come over and cook you paella - it is incredible.

A great stay.

Great family escape in picture postcard village

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 5 plus 2 grandparents had a wonderful stay at this villa. It is a great base to explore the alleys and streets of Gaucin and then head off to Ronda, the coast or beyond. The owner Bruce was responsive and helpful. I would thoroughly recommend this property to families looking for a peaceful escape.

If we won the Lottery

  • 5 of 5

Firstly, we want to sing this villas praises but in the other hand we want to keep it a secret in order that it is available when we want. On holiday my husband commented that if he won the lottery he would buy a villa like this in Gaucin and not change a thing - this is high praise from him indeed. We travelled to Gaucin in April a family of two adults and two children aged 3 and 9.

We were welcomed by Erika who looks after the house for the owners and has lived in the village for many years. She was very friendly and helpful with any requirements or questions. The property as stated has three bedrooms in the main house and a separate garden room which our teenager will use when we come back in the summer.

There are steps to the property as like all traditional Spanish dwellings but this is not an issue with parental supervision.

The villa is central to the village with a small grocery shop just around the corner where you can get almost anything. The owners are also very friendly and there produce is reasonably priced and fresh.

There is also a new restaurant just on the corner which opened Easter weekend we didn't go as the property has a great large kitchen - gas cooker and lots of utensil that it was a pleasure cooking. The kitchen has beautiful windows surrounding the area. There are also may levels to the property where you can eat outside or in the large open plan dinning room. The children enjoyed the swimming pool even on the days it was chilly we are from Scotland so any weather is tropical to us. The pool is safe for children and luxurious for adults with wooden sun loungers and pads. The pool gate has a safety lock, shower and a pool lady that will visit early in the morning during your stay, probably before you are up. The beds are comfy and rooms well stocked with books for children and adults alike. Also, due to towels being provided and a washing machine you could get away with taking hand luggage. The children loved the play room which is well stocked with toys, dvds and a sat TV. This was good for cooler days. In the village there is a well stocked stationary shop where we bought paints. On cooler days they painted on the balcony off of the living room. The living area has many books and cds so no need to bring them on holiday. We enjoyed the log fire at night and noted that there are fans in the property . Cant wait for our return.

Beatiful Gaucin House

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from a great holiday at this beautiful House in Gaucin. We were a party of 6 adults, 2 teenage boys and baby of 8 months. Bruce was extremely helpful through the rental process, and it was great to be greeted on arrival by Erika who was able to help us to get our bearings in the town. The house is very special and beautifully furnished and the views from the lovely terraces are stunning. It is a great base for exploring the area including the coast and Ronda, and lovely to return to Gaucin for an afternoon by the pool and an evening in one of the Tapas bars in town. We ate out a several bars in town and had fantastic food and service, all extremely good value. The house was within easy reach of the centre, and the local shops and supermarket offer a very good choice for self catering. You have to be brave and think thin to drive in the narrow streets of Gaucin, but it was all part of the fun! It was a really memorable holiday!

Best house ever!

  • 5 of 5

As a family, we have rented holiday houses throughout France, Italy and Spain for the last twenty one years, and this was our third visit to Gaucin. This is without doubt our favourite rental in all that time, perfectly meeting our requirements for a comfortable and relaxed house with great outside space, near to or within a village with enough bars and restaurants to keep us going. We were travelling with another family, and together our party included five girls between the ages of 15 and 21 - their "oohs" and "aahs" as the lovely Erika showed us around made it quite clear how excited they were, and continued to be, as the week progressed. "I love this house!" was a familiar refrain. We knew Gaucin was a perfect destination for us, but the house was a real revelation - the terraces being the stand out feature, and really made our stay. It was no surprise to find that Bruce was a garden designer, but I for one particularly liked the way the various parts of the garden did not feel too "designed," but felt as if they had gradually evolved (with a lot of careful thought behind that evolution, of course). Basically, we loved everything about this house. Our only regret if that we often go away with a bigger party (16) and the house is not big enough for us to introduce all of them to its charms!

Location

From the Owner

It has been a dream of ours to build a house in an exciting foreign location. Gaucin is certainly that, the views, the sunshine and the charm of the village and the people, all make this a perfect escape. This house of ours is a result of that dream. Our mountain top retreat from the real world, a little paradise that reflects our passions of travel, art and interiors. I am a garden designer and the garden and pool that we have created here is our version of a Mediterranean Eden. We enjoy our home comforts but where better to put them than on top of a mountain where we can gaze at Africa from our living room terrace!

Facilities

From the Owner

The house being in the heart of the village is convenient for wandering the streets and tapas bars of Gaucin, but it also is a haven of tranquility and to spend an afternoon lounging and reading by the pool or dining out under the stars is as peaceful as any afternoon in the countryside. We also love to visit the historic towns of Ronda ( only half an hour away ), Seville, Granada and Cordoba. When it comes to beaches, the nearest is only half an hour away, but our favourite beach probably in the world is an hour away at Tarifa, unspoilt expanses of Atlantic dune backed beaches with the beautiful, quirky ancient salt battered town itself, it is a delight. From Tarifa, we often take the hydrofoil ferry across to Morocco, only a half hour crossing, but another world away.

Notes:

  • Notes on accommodation: Children are most certainly very welcome , the house is equipped with a selection of toys and children's DVDs, but parents of very young children may wish to be aware that there are some stairs down through the garden and an open staircase in the living room. The pool area however is securely separated behind a gate and we have spent many a fabulous holiday with our own children here and lived here ourselves when they were very young with no problem. Outside: A series of delightful terracotta garden terraces tumble down below and behind the house. The main upper terrace is an idyllic place to enjoy alfresco outdoor life, Spanish style. Built around a mature lemon tree this terrace consists of two dining / sitting areas. A timber pergola with Moroccan arches overlooks the pool below, a place to spend hot afternoons dosing in one of the hammocks or enjoying a long lunch in the shade around the rustic oak dining table. There is also another open seating area perfect for when the heat of the sun has subsided and the barbecue is lit! Steps lead from here down to the gated, private swimming pool area. The gated, curved pool (approx. 8 x 4m) is designed to allow one to swim beneath a beautiful arching palm tree and it's surrounding flower beds. Sunloungers and outdoor seating are provided and you can choose between improving your tan on the pool terrace or escaping from the mid-day heat courtesy of the shade provided by the pergola above. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: All towels and linen included. Not beach towels. There is a maid service once a week. Other: Attractive second living room with Moroccan archway, houses a T.V. and DVD library. From this room there is also a downstairs toilet with washroom / shower. Ideal as a TV room or childrens playroom. Toys provided ...lego , puzzles etc
