Villa in La Herradura, Costa Tropical, Spain - Peaceful and private with an Infinity pool

Casa Shalimar is situated on the edge of the sleepy fishing village of La Herradura on the Costa Tropical, the warmest part of southern Spain. It is 70km east of Malaga in the province of Granada. Park at the top and then walk down many steps to the gates to the house. Open the front door and you are greeted with the feeling of being on a boat as all you can see is the Mediterranean. Change into your costume and jump from the rocks or use the steps into the sea. Snorkel and dive in the clear blue sea. It's claimed galleons from the Spanish Armada sank nearby and many divers search the seabed for gold coins. The house has lovely terraces overlooking the bay and a picturesque infinity pool. The property nestles on the rocks and is totally secluded. One can watch dolphins swimming in the bay and enjoy hours of snorkeling from the luxury of one's own house. Casa Shalimar is decorated in an eclectic, shabby-chic style,the house has been designed to a comfortable home not a show home.

Absolutely amazing place to holiday. The views from inside and outside of the villa are very impressive. The owner of the property has obviously spent a long time collecting furnishings and designing the interior and exterior of the property giving it character and elegance. We found the property managers extremely helpful and arrived to find it very clean and tidy property. The infinity pool offers great views and the terraces offer long days in the sun. With great shops and local produce in La Herraudura the villa is only a short walk to town. No hesitation in recommending this property and experience.

Owner easy to work with. Accurate description. Clean. Helpful owner when making reservations. Beautiful views. Wonderful outdoor patio for eating and relaxing. Able to jump off the rocks right into the sea and also soak in the pool. Felt like our own private resort. One of our family's favorite vacation spots ever (parents with 3 teens). Also a nice 10 minute walk down to the village for fresh market food and bread each morning. The village is MUCH less touristy than typical southern coast. We are from California and not use to the rocky european beaches so the villa with its own pool and ocean access was awesome. Plenty of towels, kitchen stuff. The master bed was broken our entire trip but owner was nice to compensate us for the inconvenience and planned to fix it right after we left. If our family ever goes on a nice beach trip this would be our family's #1 choice. I would be careful staying here with little kids - easy to fall off the cliffs. Our kids, 13-18 yrs old were old enough for it not to be an issue. They would come here again in a heartbeat.

Stunning location. Beautiful House.

Although the house is decorated with great taste and the layout is fantastic, Case Shalimar is all about the view and proximity to the sea. The master bedroom has floor to ceiling windows and waking up to that view each morning was a great way to start each day. The second bedroom was a great size and had a large bathroom with a tub and wet room type shower. The third bedroom was a twin but the beds were big. All rooms were ensuite, which was nice. There were also some built in bunk type beds just off the kitchen. They were hidden away. Really quite a clever use of space.

The Infinity pool was a dream (even had a little waterfall area) and as the weather was lovely we ventured down the rocks (that have steps) and also swam in the sea.

I’m a chef and the kitchen was a dream to cook in, full of everything you need to make a meal. We spent most evenings eating on the huge terrace with the sea right behind us. Bliss. To be honest you need not leave the house. However if you do, it’s only a 5 minute walk to La Herradura proper, where you’ll find lots of bars and restaurants right along the beach.

La Herradura is where the Spanish go for a break. It’s that authentic, and as such it’s easy to get immersed in the culture and especially the food.

The owner Clare was also really helpful when I had a question and she even arranged for a lovely hamper basket upon our arrival, which was a nice touch as we arrived late in the evening and were famished.

I couldn't recommend this place more. We’ll be going back without hesitation.

Stunning sea views

Casa Shalimar was exactly as described - a private, spacious waterside property with character & outstanding views. The large outside eating area has an excellent canopy & seating where one can totally relax whilst taking in the absolutely stunning views across the bay & sea.

Having a path from the house to the sea was brilliant & the water temperature was about 25 degrees (very comfortable). Take a face mask & snorkel as the rocky sub-sea views are beautiful & fish are very colourful. There's a fishing rod & tackle in the house where one can idle away a few hours at the end of the day. If you don't fancy the sea you get the same breathtaking vista from the pool.

Having filtered water in the kitchen was a real bonus - no need to lug bottled water from the shops.

La Herradura itself is a genuinely Spanish location. Plenty of bars & restaurants, plus a large beach. There are about 140 shallow gradient steps to take you back to civilisation when you want to venture out.

In summary, if it is a villa with truly unbeatable views in a private location with spacious verandas, you are unlikely to find better.

The village of La Herradura is 5 minutes walk away. It also has a lovely beach. Great for children to have the freedom to walk to the village on their own.

Then put in la Herradura, Spain - then when that comes up put in Camino de la Torre. and my house is a dangly bit of road on the left between Camino de la Torre and Calle Cala de Perro.


The main airport is Malaga 1 hour away with numerous flights per day. Granada Airport also 1 hour away.


The town of Almunecar is 10 mins away. This has a large gift market on Tuesdays. Many restaurants bars etc. The centre is lovely - with sherry bars and gammon on bread. Ancient cty of Granada one hour away, with spectacular views. Alhambra palace. Gypsy quarter, vast range of shops and restaurants. For Alhambra Palace: it is best to book in advance - usually for the afternoon booking (after 2pm).

Further Details:

The village has many bars and restaurants all within walking distance from the house. At the end of the village is a great late night bar called 'La Cochera' which has regular bands and is an immensely popular venue. You can stroll down to the village in the daytime and buy all you produce totally fresh from the food market in the centre. Fish, meat, fruit etc. There are 2 bakeries were all the bread is freshly baked and often hot from the oven. There are many small supermarkets as well. A local market in the square on Friday for clothes etc. There are plenty of gift shops and once you have finished shopping enjoy a coffee or a delicious meal overlooking the sea.

Outside: The biggest feature of the house is that you can swim from the rocks as there are steps directly down to the bay. Perfect for a pedalo to splash around in. Infinity pool, not heated - private with small waterfall. Barbecue. 6 sun loungers and cushions. huge dining table and L shaped Moroccan bench with cushions under a pergola, outside lights. Lots of terraces overlooking the sea. There are steps that lead to the roof which has a lovely area for private sunbathing with views and sunsets. There is a rugged garden area.
