About this property

Riverside Accommodation with Pool. <br>

Quinta Souto Covo is situated in a very peaceful valley, one and a half hours drive from Porto and near the beautiful city of Viseu. The Douro River and Port wine area are nearby and historical towns such as Vila Real, Bragança and Coimbra are an easy day trip away.

The views from the main house and the self-catering Lodge, are breathtaking. There is a large, salt filtered pool on the terrace below the Lodge and down at the river a private 'beach' and swimming area with its own sunbaking terrace. The gardens are extensive and a pleasure to walk through and the sound of water follows you wherever you go.

The property consists of two houses, the main house occupied by the owners, Tony and Sherrin and a spacious, loft style guest house which is called the Lodge.
The Lodge is a family house, with a large sitting room opening onto a 32 m2 terrace overlooking the pool and gardens which lead down to the river and sleeps 5 family members comfortably but we also offer two suites in the main house for larger families or friends who would like their own space. These two en-suite, bed sitting rooms have their own separate entrances so are separate from the main house and approached through the garden on a separate level, about 25 meters from the Lodge.

The Lodge:
The main bedroom with a super king size bed is on a spacious mezzanine floor with spectacular views. It has a hand basin, antique desk and large cupboard.
The second sleeping area is an attic niche off the entrance hall. It is reached by a small ladder and is a favorite with children and teenagers. It has two large single beds, overhead individual reading lamps and a storage area for cases and clothes.
The third sleeping area is a single , ensuite bedroom with shower, vanity basin and WC , which is part of the house but has its own entrance next to the Lodge front door.
This is particularly good for a Granny or older child who would appreciate more privacy.

The kitchen / breakfast room with a huge picture window is fully equipped for 12 people and has a dishwasher, coffee machine, all laundry items and fridge/ freezer.
On the terrace , there is ample seating and outdoor furniture for alfresco dining .
You also have your own BBQ area with a picnic table and benches in a garden next to the Lodge.
All linen , towels and beach towels are supplied . Towel changes as needed.

The pool is large , salt water filtered ( so no harsh chlorine ) with a sun deck with sun beds and down at the river is a sun baking terrace , ideal for picnics, with steps down to a sandy beach and a safe natural pool. Following downstream is a long swimming lane leading to a ford, ideal for boating and exercise for the wild swimmers!
We have a kind, gentle dog on the property so lots to amuse little ones who find it a magical place.
Although your privacy of home and pool use is guaranteed, we are close enough to help with all your queries , if you need, during your stay.

Special interest holidays:
Known as a painter's paradise, the area and indeed the views from the rooms are perfect for the aspiring or established painter, and it is rumoured that Picasso painted here in this very Lodge.
Fishing is an absolute must ( in season) with an idyllic flowing river at the bottom of the garden and plenty of trout! Walking in the hills and valleys is ideal for the energetic. On the River Douro, 35 minutes drive away there are several Quintas who offer wine and Port-wine tastings. Nearby are two renowned Health Spas which offer various types of specialised treatments. 20 minutes drive from here there is a very entertaining riverside Water Park which is ideal for little ones and adults alike. There is a tennis court 15 mins drive away. Fly fishing is a relatively new sport in Portugal and we offer a wonderful river and expert ¨Ghillie¨service for enthusiasts. Trout, and local species are to be fished.

Coast/Beach:
Aveiro and the village of Costa Nova is the closest beach. It is a one and a quarter hour drive away. The beach is over 6 kilometers long and very clean, with beautiful dunes and fine sand and there are wonderful Seafood restaurants to be found there and fun beach bars. This is one of the areás best kept secrets.

Travel:
Porto Airport is 1.40 hours drive away and Lisbon 3 hours.
A car is essential.

Distances:
The Douro River and wine-making area is 45 mins away by car. Castro Daire (ameneties) 15 mins. Viseu (historic provincial capital) is 30 minutes. Reriz 5 minutes. There is a wonderful beach close to Aveiro in Costa Nova 1 1/4 hours drive away which is also renowned for its really very good Seafood restaurants.

Further Details:
In nearby Reriz village is Teresa's Bar which serves the best chicken piri piri, salad and jug of local Dão wine for 6 euros a head! Nearby are many more , good for typical local specialities such as roasted baby goat and the typical bacalhâo, (salted cod) cooked in many different ways. Castro Daire , a bustling market town, has all the shops you could want, banks, large supermarket and again many great, cheap restaurants. The local health centre is efficient and professional in case of emergency.

Wow! What a memorable and happy time we all had staying here! Sherrin and Tony were incredible hosts
The property was as described and the location just spectacular. The house suited us very well as a family with 2 children (who loved the bunk room!) and grandparent (who loved having his own ensuite 'granny flat!). Being originally from southern Africa the house reminded us of a Safari lodge. The house had everything we needed to make our stay comfortable and relaxing. We loved the views during the day of the breathtaking views over the mountains, and at night we star gazed and saw some phenomenal shooting stars. The pool was incredible and we spent lots of time swimming in it. We also loved swimming in the river and using Sherrin and Tonys inflatable boat to paddle in the river. We went on several walks around the local area- which is really very beautiful. For us our stay was made so special by Sherrin and Tonys incredible hospitality and kindness: a super welcome pack, welcome drinks at their house, allowing our children to help with looking after the chickens and ducks and walking of the dogs, helpful advice about the local area, and just lovely chats when we saw each other. We plan to return and would definitely recommend others to stay here too.

Fantastic trip..
I first saw this fantastic Quinta last year on YouTube and wanted to go then, but sadly had too much work to doo!!! This year however we decided to go for s short stay in late February and it did not disappoint at all... The Owners Tony and Sherrin were amazing hosts and extreamly helpful and kind. After arriving we fealt very much at home as we went and had coffee with them in the main house. Also Sherrin’s home made bread was a real treat. The lodge was fantastic and comfortable and the views are actually better in real life!!! I really went to see the river. As a keen fly fisherman I wanted to see if it could fish well in the season. We walked a lot of the banks and it’s very accessible and a large amount of fish!!!! If we were there longer we would have done more exploring as there is plenty to do. Particularly exploring the Towns and Villages on the Douro.. I would definitely go back for longer!! Thank you Tony and Sherrin for a great break and see you again soon!

Lovely hosts but the property was not as described.
This was a family holiday for 5 people - 2 adults, 3 teens. Firstly - Tony and Sherrin are lovely people and Sherrin stayed up until 3am as our flight was delayed and we had travel problems. On arrival there was a fruit basket, wine, eggs and milk in the fridge etc and they offered us coffee the next morning and introduced themselves - very friendly - cannot fault them and if the rating was about people, I'd give them 5 stars. Secondly - The accommodation. We picked the property because it was advertised as having 3 bedrooms. This is where the star rating falls. Bedroom 1 - Gorgeous and perfect for a honeymoon couple. Bedroom 2 was advertised as having 2 full sized beds which we thought was ideal for our teenage boys (17 and 15yrs old) and so expected a twin bedroom as the advert description was: "Bedroom 2: 2 x large single beds". However, bedroom 2 was a very small attic space that the boys could not stand up in, indeed they could only just kneel and it had a sloping ceiling. There was no bedroom furniture, no wardrobe and just a ledge to put suitcases and some clothes on - the full sized beds were in fact mattresses laid onto the attic floor. The main advert also stated that "all bedrooms have separate hand basins" - it did not have a hand basin. There was only a ladder to access the space and this had to keep being moved so we could open the front door. This was more than disappointing and the description is a misrepresentation of the room. The lack of space for our 2 sons did have a dramatic effect on the enjoyment of our holiday because they both found it cramped, they couldn't get dressed in it and it offered no privacy and also as the ladder blocked the front door access - it meant that if our daughter wanted to come into the lodge during the night (her room had no access to the main lodge other than via the main door), she could not (unless we stored the ladder, which would have meant our sons being unable to climb down to use the toilet). In summary bedroom 2 is a sleeping area and not a bedroom and not suitable for adults or teenagers and the description did not give a fair or accurate description of what it actually was. Bedroom 3 was a pretty room with an en-suite. It has no access to the main lodge other than via the main front door - something we had queried in advance but I think the communication on this was confused. As we arrived at 3am we had no option but to accept the accommodation as was.

About the host

Hosted by Quinta Souto Covo

Host profile image
Tony and Sherrin bought Quinta Souto Covo in 2006.
In 2009 after a huge renovation of the Main House and Lodge in the large, riverside grounds, they decided to share their labour of love with guests and have made friends for life in the wonderful people who have stayed there since.
They are passionate about Portugal, the life, food, wine and history and enjoy passing on their knowledge.
'You will be welcomed as guests and leave as friends,' as one guest wrote, ' more of a house party than a villa rental'.

Why they chose this property

The Lodge and suites in the Main house are beautifully furnished with every little luxury to make your stay memorable.
The grounds and surrounding countryside are just breathtaking . The sound of water follows you everywhere from fountains, water channels and the river which flows through the garden. There are walks galore and beautiful terraces for the less energetic guest. It is perhaps the most beautiful area of Portugal, not so well known that there are hoards of tourists. The villages and city of Viseu nearby are full of history and some remarkable architecture and the two wine growing regions, Dão and Douro are within short driving distance, with very hospitable visits for wine tasting to be enjoyed.
Diverse, elegant and full of things to do , BEIRAS ALTAS and Quinta Souto Covo are a must for lovers of Portugal.

What makes this property unique

The Quinta is a haven of peace and tranquility. A place of forgotten childhood pleasures. Walks with animals, making boats and sailing them on the river, swimming at night in the flood lit pool.
It has become a place of return holidays and we have seen the transformation of little children into young adults, still beguiled by the magic of mountains and water, card games on the terrace, and wonderful local food and wine after an early morning hike with the family.
It is the atmosphere mixed with all the comforts of home that make this property so special.
So much or so little to do, such a hard choice!
