Charming Cottage, Beautifully Renovated With Private Heated Pool and Hot Tub

Updated: 27-Sep-2016
Cottage near St Jean D'Angely, Charente Maritime - Quiet Rural Setting, Amenities Close By

This charming 18th century stone cottage has been beautifully renovated to provide high quality relaxing holiday accommodation. Exposed beams and limestone walls retain its character whilst all modern facilities including free wi-fi access are provided. Positioned in a small hamlet in a very peaceful countryside location with vines alongside the spacious lawned, fenced garden. Our heat-pump typically maintains the 40m2 pool around 27-28deg+ May through September (unlike solar heating which cannot be relied on to do this!) and a fabulous 7 person, 42 jet hot tub at 37deg is great on an evening and any cooler days. All enclosed by legally required, approved safety fencing and gate. The roof terrace has terrific uninterrupted 30km views and the lawned garden has apple, cherry and fig trees to provide shade on our many hot, sunny days. The barn games room has table tennis etc. and a few bikes for your use on the miles of meandering tracks and quiet roads accessible directly from the garden.

About the Owner

Steve & I (Moira) took early retirement in 2005 to come here to live in this beautiful, sunny part of France.

We had lots of work to do landscaping, re-roofing and extending which we really enjoyed except when winter temperatures hit -11! With Steve's musical interests and a 'spare room' he was able, at last, to put together his own small recording studio. One of my interests is painting - whether it is landscapes or the odd bit of furniture picked up at the brocantes.

Our young black Labrador, Ollie takes us on rambles around the fields and parcelles of vines which surround us, or we tootle off in our old Land Rover and explore further afield. We both enjoy the wildlife here -the birds and keeping an eye open for deer and wildboar. We have nesting Barn Owls in (surprisingly!) the barn.

Relaxing and peaceful

  • 4 of 5

Great property, everything you could need. Lovely pool and hot tub, with large secure gardens. Very rural, you will realistically need to drive to do anything. Nice restaurants nearby and horse riding/ kayaking/ go karting. Beach 45mins drive. Supermarket 20mins away. Hosts friendly and helpful. We dont return to the same place twice on holidays as there is more to explore in the world, but would certainly recommend to friends.

Character cottage beautifully renovated in lovely rural setting

  • 5 of 5

My family stayed in this cottage in June this year. The owners were very welcoming and hospitable and made us feel at home straight away. The cottage itself is very well equipped and comfortable and the pool and hot tub and surrounding pretty garden an added bonus.

If you like walking, bird watching etc. there are many walks directly from the garden which is lovely. We did a lot of sightseeing as we were keen to see the area and this house is a good base as there are lots of places to get to in well under an hour. Cognac and Saintes the nearest towns are very pleasant and we drove to Bordeaux, which is a lovely city, in just over an hour or so.

Steve and Moira, the owners, have lots of information about what to do etc. and it is all noted down in the visitors handbook.

All in all, a lovely place to stay, highly recommended.

Fabulous cottage in the nicest area in France

  • 5 of 5

Our second stay in this wonderful cottage. Everything is to hand and the cottage is well equipped, the pool is perfect particularly on yet another hot sunny day and Steve and Moira are extremely hospitable and full of ideas of where to go. The area is ideal - quietly situated in amongst the vines and the sunflowers yet the coast is within an hours drive so lots of choices of what to do if you can tear yourself away from the cottage and pool. We would certainly recommend Chez Rivieres as a great relaxing place to stay and look forward to returning again one day 😎

Simply the best

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from the perfect family holiday at this delightful, well appointed and well equipped cottage in the heart (and peacefulness) of the French countryside. Fantastic pool, luxurious hot tub and views to die for. Nothing is too much trouble for hosts Steve and Moira. All in all, the right ingredients for a great holiday. We've never considered returning to a gite before...until now...like many before us, we'll be back.

Wonderful Holiday Cottage

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from a fantastic two weeks in August. The cottage is located in a small hamlet surrounded by vineyards and sunflowers, its ideal for our young boys with an immaculate pool and plenty of grounds for them to let off steam. The cottage itself is of good size with three large bedrooms, very well maintained and full of everything you could ask for. Steve & Moira were excellent hosts, always welcoming and friendly, they kept us supplied with their wonderful home grown produce. Their extremely well behaved Labrador, Ollie became a firm favourite with the boys. The cottage is situated between the market towns of St Jean D’Angely and Saintes, an hours drive will get you to the coastal resorts of Royan (wonderful beaches and excellent zoo at La Palmyre) La Rochelle (world class Aquarium) and Ile de Re (ideal of cycling). We found plenty to keep us occupied for the two weeks at this wonderful property in a lovely part of France. We look forward to returning in the future.

Charming, peaceful and comfortable

  • 5 of 5

We spent a very enjoyable week with our three young children in this beautifully refurbished and comfortable cottage; this property delivers everything the description claims. The hosts Steve and Moira are friendly, considerate and generous, and, their pet labrador Ollie is gentle and brilliant with young children. If your idea of a holiday is to relax and spend time surrounded by beautiful countryside with access to a heated pool you won’t be disappointed. Be good to yourself, vivez le reve a la francaise!

From the Owner

Well, coming from the chilly North East of England we wanted to move somewhere we could pass the summer months in shorts and tee-shirts. The South of France was too hot, we have nearly as many sunshine hours here and it's still a reasonable drive back up to the UK when we want to visit the family. This is such a lovely area - great climate, attractive architecture, rustic towns, a strong Roman heritage and we enjoy fabulous 'big skies' here both day and night. Why would we choose anywhere else?

From the Owner

We have fabulous views from our roof terrace which makes breakfast up there a memorable experience and you might even spot a small herd of deer among the vines. Typically our environmentally friendly heat pump maintains our pool at a very acceptable 27-28deg+ which extends the swimming period over the 'shoulder' months of May & September. We chose this method over solar heating for this very reason. Our hotub, which we keep at 37deg, is great for any cooler days or on an evening when you can lie back in luxury and stargaze with a beer or a couple of glasses of wine. Lubbly jubbly.
