Farmhouse in Castiglione Messer Raimondo, Abruzzo, Italy - Olive Farm Deep In Spectacular Abruzzan Countryside. Ideal For A Quiet Holiday

Casa Del Falco is a small working olive farm deep in magnificent Abruzzan countryside. Reached by somewhat rutted 'white roads', it provides an authentic flavor of rural Abruzzo. It lies midway between the hill towns of Castiglione MR and Bisenti, both with beautiful medieval centres that have escaped 'gentrification'. Excellent shops provide an abundance of fresh local food and wine. The area is well served for meals out by pizzerias, rosticcerias and agriturismo restaurants. Although little English is spoken, the people of Abruzzo provide visitors with the warmest of welcomes. Two deep, wooded ‘fossa’ (gullies) provide a haven for birds and, in May/June, fireflies. There are butterflies and lizards everywhere and wild flowers in profusion. Our fruit trees - peaches, figs, pomegranates and walnuts - can be freely picked in season. The historical centres of Penne and Atri are within half an hour's drive and in less than an hour, you can be on the coast or deep in the Apennines.

Beautiful location

  • 5 of 5

It is a very isolated property with fantastic views. Well equipped and well maintained with good service from the owners. It is very isolated though. The white roads are maintained better than many and passable. However the roads in the area are generally minor, twisty and have suffered in the 2009 earthquake. This limits how far you can go in a day but the upside is the roads are generally quiet. There is plenty within reach to see. If you want to potter in rural Italy, enjoy the beauty of the Grand Sasso area, enjoy the local cuisine and end your day sipping wine on the patio admiring the mountain landscape this is for you.

Perfect Abruzzo location between mountains and sea

  • 4 of 5

Casa del Falco is an extremely comfortable and well equipped house in Abruzzo, ideally positioned between the Gran Sasso mountains (with the highest peaks visible from the window) and several laid-back beach resorts to suit most tastes. For those tired of either, there are a host of lovely old towns to wander around.

We loved the solitude, broken only by farming sounds. Mosquito nets on all the windows allowed us to keep cool in 35C temperatures. When the local roads are eventually mended it would be perfection!

Perfect relaxed getaway

  • 5 of 5

Amazing property with stunning views. Particularly enjoyed having bbqs on the patio and the pizza oven was an unexpected bonus. The surrounding area was serene and beautiful, with mountains to climb or gorgeous, historic towns to visit. Perfect 5 day break from work, 10/10 would stay again.

Stunning

  • 5 of 5

Absolutely stunning scenery. Not the easiest place to get to but that's what makes this place so special, not another house in sight. Ideal place to get away from the world and relax in one of the most picturesque locations I've ever been.

Peaceful enclave, view of mountain, olive groves

  • 5 of 5

The house is tucked on the side of hills, with a patio area surrounded by herbs

and – for this London resident – the much welcome sound of birds. There are good sized rooms, a wood pizza oven, and a useful selection of books on wildlife and the local area. There is space for a more active or relaxed routine, and mountain walks are easily accessible by car. A particular favourite of mine was discovering wildflowers in the mountains where snow had melted from winter.

Beautiful mediaeval towns are easily accessible for anyone who wants to explore this great area of Italy. We mixed up enjoying the house and exploring and would recommend it to others for the same.

Would thoroughly recommend!

Lovely holiday home in the middle of Italian countryside. Short drive from supermarkets and local towns and villages, though I was quite happy sitting on the patio with a view of snow covered mountains.

Location

From the Owner

We fell in love with Casa Del Falco because of its quiet location deep in the Abruzzan countryside and the fantastic views. We also have very supportive Italian neighbours and have made a number of real friends in the area. We also love the historic centres in most of the local 'citta' in the area and the food and wine.

Facilities

From the Owner

The house provides us with peace and quiet, fantastic views and is the perfect location for exploring the region of North Abruzzo. Picking our own olives and having them pressed at the local frantoia is hard work but also great fun. We usually have a few UK friends to help and the resulting oil is fantastic.
