Apartment in Venice, Veneto, Italy - Romantic, Typically Venetian Residence, Quiet yet Central
The windows of this unusual fifteenth century palazzetto all face south over a crossroads of canals, just behind the famous Ca'd'Oro on the Grand Canal, of which it is a copy in miniature. The palazzo is situated in a quiet but central area of the city just round the corner from Tintoretto's house, and from the 18th century Jesuit church with Domenico Rossi's famous interior with its sumptuous folds of damask rendered in grey-green and white marble. This house is by no means the richest or the most magnificent building in Venice but it must be one of the most graceful in the world. The balcony is planted with varieties of flowers drawn from the sculptures in St Stephan's cathedral in Vienna which was finished in the same year - well before Columbus even thought of setting off for America. Plumbing and electricity however is updated and the appartment has been completely renovated.

About the Owner
We only administer our own family properties and try to keep the atmosphere as comfortable and personal as possible, leaving our own possessions, books pictures etc for guests to enjoy, but at the same time also providing ample, adequately equipped space for guests to live in, wardrobes, storage, garden etc. Our tastes are simple: we do not attempt or pretend to run Grand Hotels with fitted carpets, Jamie Oliver kitchens, or marble bathrooms with power showers whence the water issues from gilded taps in the shape of swans.
We find that more and more guests love this atmosphere and we now have a 35% rate of return visits. We are delighted abut this because it make the whole enterprise more family than hard business.
Guestbook comments from the owner
"The palazzo is situated in a quiet area of the city but is surprisingly central. A 15 minutes stroll takes one to the Rialto and the whole area is vibrant, welcoming and full of hidden delights. The residence is beautifully maintained, well furnished (in keeping with the history of the building) and offers elegant, comfortable, well equipped accommodation for up to 5 people. Stairs from the inner courtyard would make access difficult for the disabled. House keeping is par excellence and the 'extra' touches like the welcoming postcards and bottle of wine set the scene for what can only be a memorable stay. Booking the palazzo could not be easier as the owner oversees all the paperwork personally and one is guided through the process step by step with great humour!"
"Notre séjour à Venise a été excellent La qualité du “palazetto” y est pour beaucoup L’emplacement, le charme et l’exposition sud nous ont beaucoup plus. Bref, une expérience à revivre une autre année

Perfect location; peaceful neighbourhood but near enough to the centre of everything. We took the apartment for a girls weekend but it would also be suitable for a family. It was very clean, spacious & well appointed. The meet & greet service was excellent. Nothing to fault!
From the Owner
“It was not bought, it was bequeathed. We love the aera as, although very central- seven minutes from Rialto bridge which is the point of the compass centre of the old town, it is definitely the Venice of the Venetians, well away from the touristy Disneyland which much of Venice in particular St Mark´s, has become.”
Activity and Interests
Special interest holidays:
Many watercolourists, film directors and photographers have come to stay, hot on the heels of Ruskin and Turner, in our (very non touristy) area with its northern light. We supply a canoe for messing about in boats, and seeing Venice as it was built to be seen, from the water. Courses in Venetian art and history are two a penny, usually excellent, always very accessible from our house, please see Internet.
Half an hour by Vaporetto (water bus) down the Grand Canal, across the lagoon to the Lido beach. Swimming pools on the Giudecca or just near us at Sant´Alvise.
Venice Marco Polo Airport - conveniently the boat comes straight across the lagoon to almost exactly outside our house. Treviso Airport for cheaper flights, access by bus to Piazzale Roma, and the last point you can reach in a car. Then vaporetto down the Grand Canal to our stop the Ca´d´ Oro. Car hire pointless, unless you choose an amphibious vehicle there are no roads in Venice, only canals. Parking at the entrance to the city prohibitive (far more expensive per day).
Too many to list main points of interest, Verona (Romeo and Juliet) Vicenza (Palladio) Padua (Giotto) etc. The islands are just across the lagoon from our house and easily reached by public (inexpensive) as opposed to tourist (iniquitously over priced) boats. On Murano you can still visit the glass factories and the Museum of Glass, often neglected but definite favourites with the children.
Venice needs no introduction, Billa supermarket near us is open seven days a week; various banks and cash points, iden, list of restaurants supplied on booking, good guide book much recommended, we use Bedaekers.

From the Owner
“The palazzetto overlooks a busy, wide canal. From the balcony and from all the windows you have a front seat view of local life: the comings and goings of the boats, the fruit boat, the delivery boats, - even the rubbish collecting boat is picturesque. The balcony itself is planted with the same flowers and herbs as those you find sculpted in any Gothic cathedral. The house was being built around the same time as St Stephans, in Vienna, and was finished just before Christopher Columbus set off for America If he returned today he would not find the facade changed at all. Inside our furnishings and wall hangings have been left for visitors to enjoy. Here, you could not be anywhere else than in Venice.”
