Ancient Detached Stone Cottage in Shakespeare Country

Overview

Property

Updated: 06-Dec-2016
Cottage in Bidford on Avon, Nr. Stratford upon Avon, Warwickshire, England - Peaceful Rural Location Within a Small Hamlet Close to the River Avon

A variety of spaces make this an excellent venue for groups as does its central position within England. A footpath leading to the delightful village of Bidford on Avon passes in front of the cottage (1 mile) with its shops, pubs and a supermarket. If one carries on over the bridge, a further mile, will bring you to a great little village pub the Cottage of Content at Barton. Cheerful and welcoming! In the other direction a path rises up above the village and can be followed to the delightful village of Cleeve Prior. There you will find a beautiful 15th century church and equally old pub, The Kings Arms. With its beams, log fires, real ale and great food it is everyone's idea of an English Country Pub. There is a quiet route through the lanes to the Stratford Greenway which give cycle access to Stratford on Avon. The River Avon itself is only a few hundred metres walk and children delight in helping the boats navigate the lock at Marlcliff. Some guests even do a spot of fishing.

About the Owner

Retired now after 39 years at the chalk face (teaching), The Hamlet was my family home for 25 years. I worked hard to create an attractive, fertile organic garden which I was loathe to give up when I relocated to a smaller property in Evesham. I just moved out and left everything as it was! Consequently the house is very 'homely' and the garden green and productive! I've tried to make the home comfortable but not too 'precious' so that families with children and/or dogs would not feel too up tight during their stay. In retirement I've continued doing the garden and have been able to travel extensively usually on my bike! I will probably pop in to say hello and you may see me hoeing my veg garden but the large lawned gardens surrounding the house are exclusively for the use of guests.

Jane and Nick.. This is an absolutely gorgeous place that has far exceeded our expectations. We have enjoyed every minute and we will be back!

Donna...Thanks Geoff for an absolutely fab time. Just what we all needed. Reading, jigsaws and plenty of dog/pub walks. The cottage was wonderful. Hopefully you will have us back!

Megan... Thanks for letting us stay in your beautiful house. We could not have wished for a nicer home and place to stay for our visit to England. Weather was warm and sunny which enabled us to spend many hours in your beautiful garden.

Charming cottage

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was beautiful and very well equipped. The log burner was a lovely romantic addition to the cottage. A car is recommended for this location as the walk to the nearest village during the night might be quite hazardous. Lovely for a stroll during the day or a bike ride. The local village is ok to buy basics and there are a couple of takeaway restaurants. We have already booked to go back. The owner is very friendly and helpful.

Owner's Response: Glad you had a jolly time and enjoyed yourselves. The footpath in front of the cottage leads across the fields to Bidford the nearest town. Maybe a bit dark at night but fine in daylight. Be good to see you again.

From the Owner

I grew up in Birmingham and one of our special childhood treats was to catch the 148 bus from Moseley to Bidford on Avon and walk across the fields through Marlcliff and onto the teashop (now closed!) at Cleeve Prior. When the Hamlet came on the market in 1981 it had just been delightfully renovated, had large gardens and there were footpaths radiating from the cottage in many directions. Although in an essentially rural area it is only a short walk along the river or across the fields to Bidford on Avon which has plenty of 'facilities' There are some great bike rides, country and riverside walks from the cottage and all the charms of the Cotswold villages and countryside, and Stratford on Avon, within 10 miles.

Activity and Interests

Special interest holidays:

The area has many footpaths including The Heart of England Way and The Cotswold Way. If guests want, the cottage owner can lead them on local walks.

Travel:

Birmingham Airport is about 30 miles away. There is a bus service which goes from the village to Evesham and Redditch and trains leave nearby Honeybourne (5 miles) for London Paddington, Oxford, Worcester and Hereford.

Distances:

Stratford on Avon and Evesham are both 7 miles away. Warwick with its splendid castle is about 15 miles distant. The Cotswold towns of Broadway and Chipping Campden are 10 miles. There are a number of National Trust Properties within a ten mile radius, Coughton Court, Hidcote Gardens, Charlecote and Snowshill Manor among them. Privately owned Ragley Hall is only 6 miles and places like Birmingham and Rugby are near enough to reach in an hour or so.

Further Details:

Bidford on Avon has a delightful French bakery, a Budgens supermarket, a garage, a Chinese takeaway, fish n chip shop several Indian restaurants, a Lloyds Bank, a pub with a riverside garden and a superbly sited riverside eatery The Bridge.

Facilities

From the Owner

Some visitors just stay around the property. They read, cook, eat, walk, cycle, fish in the river, use the local pubs and shops and really chill out. Some have the above sorts of days but go into Stratford, Cheltenham, or Broadway to shop or 'do' the usual tourist things. There are a large number of National Trust Properties close by so members often get their money's worth and visit these. Guests with children usually visit Warwick Castle and Cadburys' World in Birmingham. Visitors from abroad often have frenetic days travelling to London, Bath, Oxford, Stone Henge etc. There is a direct train service to Oxford and London (Paddington) from Honeybourne only 4 miles away (free parking at station).

Notes:

  • Outside: Gardens are large and mostly lawned. There is a patio table outside with seating for seven. There is a shallow pond and paths lead on to paths shared with three other cottages. It's not therefore the sort of garden a dog or very young child could just be let loose in. The cottage is therefore only suitable for placid well trained dogs. Utility Room: There is a washing machine, clothes airer, ironing board and iron. The gas central heating boiler is located here so clothes drying is pretty efficient. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Linen and towels are provided and the property is thoroughly cleaned after each visit. No charge.
