Overview

About the property

Cottage in Bidford on Avon, Nr. Stratford upon Avon, Warwickshire, England - Peaceful Rural Location Within a Small Hamlet Close to the River Avon

A variety of spaces make this an excellent venue for groups as does its central position within England. A footpath leading to the delightful village of Bidford on Avon passes in front of the cottage (1 mile) with its shops, pubs and a supermarket. If one carries on over the bridge, a further mile, will bring you to a great little village pub the Cottage of Content at Barton. Cheerful and welcoming! In the other direction a path rises up above the village and can be followed to the delightful village of Cleeve Prior. There you will find a beautiful 15th century church and equally old pub, The Kings Arms. With its beams, log fires, real ale and great food it is everyone's idea of an English Country Pub. There is a quiet route through the lanes to the Stratford Greenway which give cycle access to Stratford on Avon. The River Avon itself is only a few hundred metres walk and children delight in helping the boats navigate the lock at Marlcliff. Some guests even do a spot of fishing.

About geoff gent

Retired now after 39 years at the chalk face (teaching), The Hamlet was my family home for 25 years. I worked hard to create an attractive, fertile organic garden which I was loathe to give up when I relocated to a smaller property in Evesham. I just moved out and left everything as it was! Consequently the house is very 'homely' and the garden green and productive! I've tried to make the home comfortable but not too 'precious' so that families with children and/or dogs would not feel too up tight during their stay. In retirement I've continued doing the garden and have been able to travel extensively usually on my bike! I will probably pop in to say hello and you may see me hoeing my veg garden but the large lawned gardens surrounding the house are exclusively for the use of guests.

geoff gent purchased this in 1980

Why geoff gent chose Alcester

I grew up in Birmingham and one of our special childhood treats was to catch the 148 bus from Moseley to Bidford on Avon and walk across the fields through Marlcliff and onto the teashop (now closed!) at Cleeve Prior. When the Hamlet came on the market in 1981 it had just been delightfully renovated, had large gardens and there were footpaths radiating from the cottage in many directions.

Although in an essentially rural area it is only a short walk along the river or across the fields to Bidford on Avon which has plenty of 'facilities' There are some great bike rides, country and riverside walks from the cottage and all the charms of the Cotswold villages and countryside, and Stratford on Avon, within 10 miles.

What makes this unique

Some visitors just stay around the property. They read, cook, eat, walk, cycle, fish in the river, use the local pubs and shops and really chill out.

Some have the above sorts of days but go into Stratford, Cheltenham, or Broadway to shop or 'do' the usual tourist things. There are a large number of National Trust Properties close by so members often get their money's worth and visit these.

Guests with children usually visit Warwick Castle and Cadburys' World in Birmingham.

Visitors from abroad often have frenetic days travelling to London, Bath, Oxford, Stone Henge etc. There is a direct train service to Oxford and London (Paddington) from Honeybourne only 4 miles away (free parking at station).

Guestbook comments from the owner

Jane and Nick.. This is an absolutely gorgeous place that has far exceeded our expectations. We have enjoyed every minute and we will be back!

Donna...Thanks Geoff for an absolutely fab time. Just what we all needed. Reading, jigsaws and plenty of dog/pub walks. The cottage was wonderful. Hopefully you will have us back!

Megan... Thanks for letting us stay in your beautiful house. We could not have wished for a nicer home and place to stay for our visit to England. Weather was warm and sunny which enabled us to spend many hours in your beautiful garden.

Perfect and Peaceful

  • 5 of 5

What a perfect place for our family to unwind. An amazing quirky cottage with its glorious peaceful garden had absolutely everything we needed for our short break. So much room for my partner, 3 teenagers and I for some much needed restful family time. So comfortable, the perfect home from home. All set in the most beautiful countryside. Geoff the owner ensured everything was perfect. Thank you Geoff. We will definitely be returning as soon as we can. We totally recommend a stay here.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for such a glowing review. It's nice to see people from, not too far away, coming for a break and making such good use of the cottage and the immediate environment. And....such lovely handwriting in the visitors' book ...as well as a squeaky clean cottage when you left. Be super to see you all again some time.

Lovely, cosy cottage

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay. The cottage was cosy and very homely with an open/log burner fire. The bedrooms were comfortable and all had their individual style. We hope to return!

Wonderful weekend away!

  • 5 of 5

The rustic cottage is spacious giving everyone room to spread out and enjoy the cottage's nooks and crannies. The fireplace is brill and kept us cosy in the evening. The sun room was lovely during the day to watch the bird activity in the garden - the gardens were amazing - loved the summerhouse. We really enjoyed the homely feel of having the owner's knick-knacks around us.

The hamlet feels remote and gave us the privacy we wanted for a group of friends to get together and catch up having not seen each other for a while. But it's actually closer to other villages for shops and pubs than you think. We enjoyed the walks across the fields and along the river.

We are planning our trip back to this cottage next year!

Lovely old cottage

  • 5 of 5

We spent a very enjoyable few days in this lovely homely cottage.

It was perfect for us with a bedroom downstairs and, I am told, the most comfortable bed ever.

Great base

  • 4 of 5

The cottage is in a great location for exploring the surroundings. We had some great walks and enjoyed the large garden. The house is very spacious.

The beds were all comfortable and the shower facilities were very good. Due to the excellent weather we did not use the main house a lot as sat in the garden every evening and breakfast time.

Access to a BBQ would have been fantastic and maybe the main house could do with a good spring clean but this did not affect our stay much at all.

Owner's Response: The garden is a great feature of the cottage, especially when the weather is so warm and sunny. I'm glad you used it so fruitfully. There is a BBQ available but I store it away unless someone asks for it. A jolly review from a jolly group. I did notice the hall needed a spring clean and had time to do that as the guests who followed you came the day after you left. It's a popular and large cottage so it's sometimes difficult to find time to dust out of the way areas when bookings are back to back.
