Well Appointed Apartment In Hill Top ‘Borgo’ Set In Stunning Umbrian Countryside

Updated: 25-Jul-2016
Apartment in Ficulle (TR), Umbria

Torre de Monaldeschi is the ideal location for a holiday, either away from the crowds in the beautiful 'green heart of Italy' or as a central location for exploring Italy. The fabulous countryside and forested hills are a wonderful place to relax, but Torre is the perfect central base from which to explore the world famous culture and architecture of Tuscany and Umbria. Wander the timeless streets in ancient hill top towns, seek out some of the local markets and festivals that take place all year round or visit one of the local spa towns and spoil yourself in the warm waters of a relaxing spa or a soothing 'feel good' treatment. Sample the area's fantastic cuisine and taste the local wines, ranging from some of the finest that Italy has to offer – Chianti Classico, Montepulciano, Orvieto Classico and Montefalco - to the quaffable, and more affordable, wines of lesser pedigree. Or spread your wings a little further - Florence to the north and Rome to the south are both just an hour and a half away and other great cities, towns and villages - Orvieto, Montepulciano, Assisi, Siena, Pisa, Cortona and our personal favourite, the “Dying City” of Civita - are all within easy reach of your centrally-located apartment.

About the Owner

We are Colin and Lis Clark. We use our apartment at Torre de Monaldeschi as our holiday home in the early-Spring and late-Autumn and make it available as a holiday let from May to October and at the New Year. As it is our second home for a good part of the year we maintain it to a high standard and have carried out many improvements since we bought the apartment in June, 2011.

`what a wonderful setting - the view in the morning overlooking the Orvieto valley shrouded in mist - brought tears to my eyes`

`lovely apartment, superb furnishings and the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in`

`we had a great time- buying food and wine in the local shops using sign language was memorable! - having candle lit suppers under the stars even more so!`

Activity and Interests

Special interest holidays:

There are many excursions and special interest opportunities available from cookery schools to cycling and walking tours etc.

About one and a half hours drive west will bring you to the sea. Well worth visiting is the Argentario Promontory - almost an island joined to the mainland by a strip of land/road. Visit the enchanting towns/ports of St Sefano and Porto Ercole. Closer are the large inland lakes of Trasimeno and Bolsena offering all types of water sports, fishing etc. A ferry trip to the quiet island of Isola Maggiore, in the centre of Lake Trasimeno, is one of our holiday ‘musts’.

Rome - two airports Ciampino (1 and a half hours drive) and Fiumicino (2 hours) - Perugia airport (an hour and a quarter) and Pisa airport (2 and a half hours) are all served by budget airlines. Torre de Monaldeschi can also be reached by fast train to Fabro or Orvieto, but a car is essential to get the best out of your holiday and the beautiful Umbrian countryside.

Nearest town is Ficulle (5kms) where you can buy local produce. Fabro (10 kms) and Orvieto (20 kms) are bigger towns with large, modern supermarkets and a range of restaurants and coffee shops. Tuscany is only a stone's throw away - visit Montepulciano (50 kms), Cortona (75 kms) and Siena (100 kms). The A1, Italy’s main autostrada, will get you to Rome or Florence - ideal for a day excursion or a longer stay – or let the train take the strain by catching the ‘rapido` from Orvieto.

Further Details:

There are countless charming medieval hilltop towns to explore in Umbria, all well worth exploring. Assisi (world heritage site), with the famous basilica of St Francis, is about an hour and a half's drive. During the year there are many local markets and festivals - food, music etc. - which are an ideal way of getting involved with the local people and way of life. Two world-famous Jazz Festivals are held each year - in Perugia and Orvieto and a music festival is held every summer in Spoleto.
