Carefully restored, walled, stone property, encircling courtyard garden with pool. In tiny hamlet set amidst rolling vineyard countryside. The property is very private surrounded by walls, however there are lovely views from the terraces and we have retained many of its exterior, original ancient features as well as a useful summer kitchen and large outside dining areas. Nearby Vaison la Romaine is a lively town with extensive Roman excavations, modern shops, supermarkets, restaurants and various cuisines as well as a magnificent Tuesday market. There are 2 riding schools just down the road, one within 5 minutes walk and another about 10 minutes away. There is excellent walking and cycling and the house lies in the heart of the finest Cotes du Rhone wine producing area with its attractive and notable villages. Easy access to airports at Nimes and Avignon which are respectively 55 and 35 minutes drive as well as Marseilles airport with major international connections an hour away.

Wine tasting within walking distance which is a great plus.

I have found this property wonderful for exploring the area and at times relaxing by the pool with a book but then in the evening to live in your own little village, which seems to be what the house becomes, with the pool lights on, candles, low music and the magic of Provence nights making it all so memorable and romantic.

Easy access. Middle of a wonderful wine growing area. Private yet within 3km of a vibrant town with masses happening for every taste i.e. exhibitions, wonderful market, brilliant music during the festival excellent daily shopping facilities. Riding schools within walking distance. Wonderful walking - excellent restaurants in the area - can be reached from UK in the day, if you need to rush through France! Fabulous cities to visit on a day trip, i.e. Avignon, Arles, Aix, Marseilles, Orange, Nimes, Uzes. Gorges and river canoeing and swimming within easy reach. Lastly and not least lovely to be near such a historic town with such modern amenities, most UK papers of the day are available at the Presse and main supermarkets.

There is always masses going on in and around Vaison la Romaine - the Tourist office is wonderful and I can arrange to download the activities during the month of your stay on to your computer. However the Tourist Office is right at the start of town and easily accessible


Camargue beaches one and a half hours drive however there are many river beaches near and canoeing.


Nimes airport 55 mins by car.

Avignon airport/Eurostar 35/45 mins by car.

Marseille airport 1 hour by car.

8 hour drive from Channel Ports.


Vaison la Romaine 3km.

Orange 25 min drive.

Avignon 35 min drive.

Arles 45 min drive.

Aix en Provence 11/2 hour drive.

Excellent walking and cycling. Fantastic wine tasting in best known Rhone vineyards. Brilliant summer Festival Season in Vaison (well known for its cultural support). Wonderful Opera in Orange in the outdoor theatre as well as good proximity to Avignon which also has a summer festival season, several river trips and top quality starred restaurants, not forgetting the Pope's Palace and half a Bridge.

Very modern and good shops in Vaison as well as several supermarkets. Quite apart from the wonderful Tuesday market in Vaison there are markets on other days in many of the surrounding small towns. The best cheese shop outside Paris. Very many and good restaurants, several open throughout the day. Some shops open on a Sunday - rare in France. Wonderful old cathedral with occasional concerts.

This property does not have a large garden, in fact it has a courtyard garden and swimming pool with plants and flowers and a covered terrace for shade in the summer, so it is more like a town house with a courtyard although it is in the country. A plus is that no one can ever overlook residents and once the automatic gate is shut and the walk-in entrance closed one has complete safety and privacy - it is like having an outdoor room, which gives one a sense of complete freedom. No possessions need locking away. One can have friends staying but elect not to meet up until after breakfast as everyone can make their own in either the kitchen or upstairs kitchenette. Brilliant for 3 couples sharing. Great to be able to cycle into town for bread and papers in the morning. Daily UK papers.

  • Notes on accommodation: This property is not particularly suitable for children (mainly due to the stairs and stone edges) Neither is it suitable for handicapped guests. Fans can be provided but since the house is old it remains cool provided guests remember to shut the shutters. There are electric heaters in all rooms as well as wood burning stoves and an open fireplace. The house is very old but comfortable and modernised without totally ripping out all original features, i.e. if things were reasonably in tact we have maintained the original doors, tiles, quirky plastering etc. Two stair cases for the top floor. Outside: Totally private pool 10 x 5 meters, with manual pool cover. 6 sun loungers, 2 sun beds, side tables. Garage for 1 car additional parking 1/2 cars dependant on size. Electric entrance gates for cars as well as pedestrian entrance. Lovely covered terrace next to summer kitchen equipped with dishwasher, plastic crockery (no glass near pool) microwave, fridge/freezer (brilliant for drinks and lunches) - gas B-b-Q. Utility Room: Hoover, brooms etc. sink. dusters, mops, iron, ironing board. Additional fridge and shower and wash basin. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: All bedlinen and towels provided (swimming towels on request only). Towels and linen changed once a week. NO CHARGE FOR FINAL CLEANING. Please leave house and outside in the same condition as you find it. ALL BINS EMPTIED AND EMPTY BOTTLES TO BE REMOVED. Other: First floor - three very comfortable en-suite bedrooms one with bedroom/dressing room. Second floor - very large sitting/breakfast/drinks area with comfortable furniture and kitchenette leading to large terrace for sunning with lovely views.
