It is situated on the top level of the development to make the most of the stunning view over the village with its ruined, medieval castle and across to the distant hills. The open plan living room has large French doors which open onto the south-facing pool and outdoor space, which includes both sunny and shaded terraces. About the Owner

Nick and I live in Bedford, England. Nick is a retired solicitor, and I am a retired French teacher (which comes in useful!). Our "pie in the sky" wish for a number of years was to own a home in France, and after much exhaustive (but highly enjoyable!) research this dream came true for us in January 2008 when we took ownership of our brand new villa.

We loved the traditional building style coupled with the modern, open feel of the interior, we loved the idea of having our own pool and we particularly fell for the amazing view - I can sit and just look out of the window for hours!

Guestbook comments from the owner

"The villa was more than we expected and the view was to die for...obviously great thought has been given to home comforts, should anyone ask us to recommend a place to stay in France, we know where to send them.' Ann and Barry

'We hadn't appreciated before we left that the air-conditioning in the bedrooms was a real bonus, if you intend to rent the property again next year, we'd very much like to hear from you!' The B family.

'Glad we discovered you and the villa. We wouldn't hesitate booking again and would thoroughly recommend the place!' K and P.

I lost count of how many times our family stayed at this villa - even though we usually prefer to find new places every year. So I thought I should finally share our appreciation of this perfect holiday spot.

The villa is almost new and well maintained. The decor strikes the perfect balance between tastefully modern and practical, very nice stuff but not so nice you can't let the kids in the house. The view from the terrace is absolutely amazing, no pictures can do it proper justice, but it does come at a small cost: This is a windy part of the country and near the top of the hill you will notice, occasionally. Bedroom A/C is great in summer, wifi works impeccably. The pool isn't huge, but big enough for a quick dip and for the kids to play all day.

The location of the villa is in a small, British dominated area above a village which is otherwise remarkably non-touristy, same as most other villages in the area. All facilities are within walking distance down the hill, except maybe a great restaurant.

We eat out a lot when in France, and fortunately there are wonderful restaurants scattered throughout the area. Our favorite price/value ratios are Le Toit Vert in Fitou, La Table du Château in Bizanet and La Table Saint-Crescent in Narbonne - all a bit far away but worth the drive. There are also good choices in neighbouring villages, ask the caretakers. Tips: In many restaurants, go for the value lunch menu and buy baguette, cheese, sausage and wine on the way back for light dinner on the terrace!

There's lots to see in the area, we suggest the idyllic abbey village Lagrasse, some of the many carthar fortresses, or any local wine producer. Or just let the road take you, the I can't really think of a place anywhere near here which is *not* strikingly beautiful, or at the very least unspoilt and unmistakably French. Trekking in the area is impressive, most villages in the area have marked village walks, but plan in advance and get a map at the tourist office as things can get quite rough, desolate and hot quickly. The drive to the great beaches on the coast (we suggest La Franqui or Leucate) is about 40 mins. You will go on small mountain roads (or take the long route around) but the effort is rewarded.

Owners Julia and Nick as well as caretakers Jeanne and Dave are extremely friendly and always helpful on any enquiry. Thank you for sharing your beautiful place and taking good care of us, look forward to coming back this summer!

Amazing Villa

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned home from a lovely week at this villa. We had a lovely welcome from the caretaker Dave - our 12 year old son was itching to jump in the pool within 5 minutes of arrival so Dave said 'off you go'! It is a very clean villa, the pool can be seen from both the lounge and the bedroom - great for monitoring older children. The pool/outside dining area is very private. the air-conditioning in the bedrooms was lovely as was the pool towels which were provided for all the family. Views of the castle and the village of Durban are beautiful, especially at night. The mezzanine has a great selection of books/dvd's and games so, as parents, we were able to relax and recharge. The local Utile supermarket provided food and petrol and the boulangerie is lovely, open sunday mornings too. Recommend visits to Fitou vineyards and the abandoned town of Perrilos. The owners very helpful from our initial enquiry to the lead up to the holiday.

We had a very relaxing week in this lovely modern villa.

No complaints at all. Swimming pool clean with outstanding views across the town.

The local representatives were extremely helpful and informative.

Air conditioning in the bedrooms very effective and welcome.

All in all a perfect week and we have recommended this property to friends and family.

Location

From the Owner

We considered various areas of France but decided on Durban-Corbieres for a number of reasons, apart from the house itself. We like being in a wine-growing area - Durban is a working, farming, wine-producing village surrounded by vineyards - the proximity to the coast, the mountains and the ski resorts, the short trip to Spain, the nearby cities of Carcassonne, Perpignan with its colourful Catalan identity and Narbonne with its amazing food market (where we've watched the locals enjoying horse meat and red wine for breakfast!) We love the vastness of the skies and the hills, the climate (more hours of sunshine than the Cote d'Azur), the endless possibilities for walking and the wealth of local restaurants - every village has its own little gem.

Activity and Interests

Coast/Beach:

The fine white sand beaches of the Mediterranean are a 30 minute drive away. Nearest are the blue flag beaches of La Franqui and Leucate.

Travel:

Budget airlines fly to a number of airports within easy reach: Perpignan, Carcassonne, Nimes, Beziers, Montpellier, Toulouse and Girona. Perpignan and Carcassonne are closest at under an hour.

Distances:

The village of Durban-Corbieres is just a few minutes walk down the hill. There is a supermarket (with petrol), bakery, pharmacy, newsagent, bank and post office. The village has one bar and restaurant, with a number of others in nearby villages, including a Michelin starred restaurant at Fontjoncouse, just a few kilometers away.

Further Details:

The area offers a wealth of things to do and see, for example:

*Durban is situated on the 'Sentier Cathare', a well-known walking trail. The lofty, romantic ruined castles of the Cathar sect are within easy reach, the closest being Aguilar, Queribus and Peyrepertuse.

*There are ancient monasteries at Lagrasse and Fontfroide.

* The historic walled city of Carcassonne, a world heritage site, is less than an hour away.

* The Canal du Midi meanders through the countryside to the north.

* the African Reserve at Sigean, an extensive wildlife park, can be reached within 30 minutes.

* Durban is in the centre of the wine region of Corbieres, with Fitou and Minervois also close by. There are countless small, and some larger, winegrowers offering wine-tasting and sales from their chateaux and 'caves'.

* The Catalan city of Perpignan is an hour away.

* The ski resorts of the Pyrenees can be reached in 2 hours.

* Barcelona is just over 2 hours away.
