Beautiful old stone cottages with courtyard and pool - Tri (1 Bedroom, Sleeps 2/4)

Updated: 27-Oct-2016
Cottages in Vrbanj, Island of Hvar, Croatia - Peaceful, Mountain Location, 3kms to Beach and Other Villages

The Quaich is situated at the foot of the mountains in the peaceful village of Vrbanj. 3 cottages surround a communal courtyard and private swimming pool. Our cottages, which are converted animal houses, are fitted to a very high standard yet also keeping their simple charm. Our aim is to provide simple luxury for our guests. The owners, Chris and Mick live on site and will endeavour to fulfil your every need. To enjoy The Quaich to it's full advantage we recommend car hire during your stay but several of the nearby towns and villages are within walking distance and cycling is very popular on the island. We are 5kms from the local ferry port of Stari Grad and 22 kms from Hvar town. There are many restaurants close by and a couple of bars and restaurants in Vrbanj itself. We offer a Romantic package also in Tri cottage and the cost includes several 'extras'. We offer many on-site services including picnics, evening meals on request, library, DVDs, taxi service.

Details for holiday cottage Tri (1 Bedroom, Sleeps 2/4), 1 Bedroom, Sleeps 4, 1 Bathroom

Tri is our romantic retreat. Again, with double-bed accommodation on a mezzanine level under a pitched roof and boasting an old roll top bath. All our sheets and towels are Egyptian cotton to help keep you cool.

Each of our beds has a mosquito net. Tri is directly adjacent to Dva and is very similar with a large living area where two additional guests can be accommodated on a fold-out sofa bed.

The cottage is equipped with TV for DVD's only and CD player with attachment for your ipod or MP3 player. There is a hairdryer in each bedroom.

The ground floor consists of an open plan lounge with double sofa bed and fully equipped kitchen including 2 ring hot plate, microwave oven and fridge. Also on the ground floor is a shower and wc.

The linen is changed weekly. All our kitchens are fully equipped and have the basic necessities like tea, coffee, sugar etc. Breakfast, out in the courtyard before the sun gets too high, is a wonderful experience.

About the Owner

My husband, Mick and I, bought The Quaich as a ruin back in 2005 and after much hard work and many trips back and forth from Brighton in UK with the majority of our furniture etc, we opened our doors to guests in summer 2008. The project turned out to be much more demanding than we first thought but with help from family and friends we have turned the ruin into a luxury home that we absolutely love and during the summer months share with our guests. Our life on the island is very different from back in the UK where Mick managed his own glazing company and I was a financial administrator. We still have a base back in Brighton and return there in the winter to see the kids.

We stayed here for 8 nights as part of our honeymoon and it was lovely. Chris and Mick were a great help and organised our hire car, sailing trip, dinner reservations and had lots of great tips on where to visit. We only hired a car for a few days and used Mick's taxi service for the rest of our stay which allowed us to relax. We stayed in Tri which is very cute and comfortable, and the bath is amazing! The pool area is also lovely and we spent our first two days just chilling out next there.

Vrbanj itself is a very quiet little village which is exactly what we were after, with a great restaurant (5 min walk away) and a little convenience store. Nearby Jelsa was a favourite spot with plenty of restaurants and cafes.

Would love to return here one day!

Wonderful cottages

Having decided we'd like to visit Hvar for a week, the big question was where to stay with an 18 month old toddler in tow? We couldn't have picked a more perfect accommodation than The Quaich. Just a few of the (many) things we loved;

- Before we even arrived, Chris was a great at communicating with me via email. Ensuring we were well prepared for the trip and helping to arrange extras to accommodate our toddler.

- Chris and Mick made us feel so welcomed, nothing was too much trouble. They provided excellent advice on local restaurants, beaches and how to best get around the island. They also made our 18 month old feel very welcomed, with toys at the ready.

- We stayed in two cottages (due to me booking last minute, this was the only way to accommodate us for the full week), Chris went out of her way to move us between the two cottages without any fuss (and not requiring our help!)

- Both cottages were simply lovely. Both had little attention to details in terms of decoration that just really made them feel very comfortable and gave them character. Air-conditioning was great too.

- We opted to have dinner cooked by Chris on our first and last night. Both meals were excellent, very tasty and well presented and dining by the pool was a highlight for us.

- The pool. It was a perfect size and very well maintained. We had a few days where we had sole use of the pool and on other days when other guests were also staying, we could easily share the space.

- Vrbanj is a quiet, peaceful location, only a few minutes drive from Jelsa, and easy to get to Hvar town. Supermarkets are not far away, and the local store (well equipped) is only a 2 minute walk away.

Mick offers a taxi service. As we had a toddler we had a hire car to make it easier to get around - but good to know the service was on offer.

Personally, after visiting Hvar town for the afternoon, our preference would be to stay inland again and away from the 'touristy traps' of Hvar town. We much preferred Jelsa and were glad we hadn't picked accommodation in the heart of Hvar town.

Overall, Chris and Mick offer more than just accommodation. With meals on offer, a taxi service, and being on hand to give advice and recommendations, they really offer a wonderful stay full of personal touches.

I recommend a stay at The Quaich - you won't be disappointed. Thank you Chris and Mick for making our first summer holiday as a family of 3 so wonderful :)

When you consider the business model for holidays lets it is very important that they are described accurately and honestly. You pay a deposit months in advance then pay the full sum due, typically at least 4 weeks before you arrive. This leaves the consumer out of pocket and hoping that what they signed up for from the website translates into reality when they arrive. Against this background I believe it is very important for consumers to share their honest, objective feedback.

It is easy to lose count of the references to luxury in the Quaich website - but what it fails to mention is mould in the shower cave (sorry shower room) which has no ventilation, but comes with a large can of Airwick; you cannot stand up in the bedroom if you are over 4 ft 6 in tall; the fixtures and fittings and universally rustic, old and uncomfortable; the towels and sheets may have been Egyptian cotton once, but now they are just old; the pool is small but pleasant but the loungers are old and battered with thin cushions; the food on arrival was rubbery prawns and plain boiled rice, and one of the most expensive meals we had all week. A small 15 in TV from the 1990s.

If this was promoted as simple, rustic accommodation it would at least be honest. But is promotes itself as luxury accommodation and on that basis it fails to deliver.

From the Owner

We chose to buy a property on Hvar mainly because it reminded me so much of Scotland with the mountains and pine forests everywhere and in addition the wonderful climate. In the spring the island is covered with wild stocks and freesia and the smells of rosemary linger. Vrbanj is a small mountain village away from the main road but not too far away from the nearest towns of Jelsa and Stari Grad. The sea is only 3km away and there are so many places to go swimming we are spoilt for choice. I was brought up in a small Scottish village where everyone knew each other and the old fashioned values such as helping your neighbour was a regular occurrence. Vrbanj is still like this and it's a little like stepping back in time. The property managed by me at Svirce is not owned by me but by a frien

Activity and Interests

Car: recommended

There are so many beaches to choose from on Hvar. The closest to us is approx. 4 kms. We have produced a list of the ten best for you to explore - from beautiful white stone beaches to rugged rocks. Snorkelling and diving are favourites on the island. There are plenty children friendly locations as well secluded romantic coves.

We can arrange an Island Tour for you so you will be able to see sites you would not normally experience.

We recommend car hire. The main airport on the mainland is Split some 30 mins drive from the ferry port. The ferry to Stari Grad takes 2 hrs and the catamaran takes 1.5 hours. We can arrange to collect you from the airport - please ask for costings but collection from either Stari Grad or Jelsa on the island is included in the package. Also if you fly into Dubrovnik and perhaps stay there for a day or two, you can then catch the ferry to Stari Grad and we can collect you from there.

Vrbanj is close to most of the main towns on the island. Jelsa, Vrboska and Stari Grad are 3 - 5kms away and Hvar town is 22kms away. There are also many trips to the nearby islands and the mainland.

Further Details:

Vrbanj has a local shop, post office, 2 bars and a restaurant. The nearest large town is Jelsa, 3kms away with a beach, marina, banks, shops, restaurants, bars, medical centre and a nightclub.

If you would like us to arrange sailing, sea kayaking or Jeep Safari just let us know and we can recommend a reliable agency.
