About the property

The 3 holiday cottages are located in the extensive grounds of the owner’s home, with private patios, and garden furniture. There are ponds and a stream, lawns and mature trees, and wildlife everywhere. You can see red squirrels, and birds of prey, and if you are lucky, hares, deer and even (rarely) wild boar! The peace and quiet is almost tangible. The local village, Lore, with its small supermarket, is within walking distance. Ceauce, a small market town with a full range of shops, banks and a small market, is a couple of miles away. 8 miles to the north is Domfront, a mediaeval market town with a fine church and a castle. Also nearby, you will find Lassay les Chateaux, with its picturesque castle, lake and rose garden. Bagnoles de l'Orne, about 15 miles away, is a spa resort set around a lake with a casino, many restaurants and smart shops. Please visit our own website for more information, and many more photos; a link is available by clicking on the 'Facilities' button above, and scrolling down until you reach it, or you can copy and paste this address into your browser: www.colmanscottages.com

If you are thinking about booking one of our cottages, please note that we have been owners since 1996, starting with Corner House in Grinton, North Yorkshire, and then with our 3 properties in Normandy in France a year later. You will see from our own websites that we have received reviews from guests, many of whom have stayed with us many times over the years. You will find links to our own websites on our Owners Direct adverts.

About Gp Capt N A and Mrs P S Colman

We have lived, or had a home, in North Yorkshire since 1978, and have grown to love the Yorkshire Dales, especially Swaledale. We have led a nomadic life for many years, which is the nature of being in the RAF. Now, ‘retired’ and in our early 70s, we still have a nomadic lifestyle. In 1993, we purchased and restored a collection of old farm buildings at Le Haut Fresnay in Normandy. This is now our second home, where we spend several months of the year managing our 3 holiday cottages there. In 1996, we acquired Corner House in Grinton, to which we return each year to relax during the winter months. Grinton and Le Haut Fresnay are delightful places, each different, but both homes we love and cherish. We invite you to come and share our enjoyment of them. You will not find a warmer welcome!

Gp Capt N A and Mrs P S Colman purchased this cottage in 1993

Why Gp Capt N A and Mrs P S Colman chose Orne

After many holidays in France, during which we always had an eye open to the possibility of buying a second home, with outbuildings and land, we were drawn inexorably towards Normandy. Not only was it quite close to the UK, enabling us to remain within easy travelling distance of our families, but it was also - to us - a beautiful part of France. So it was that on a cold and damp November day we happened upon Le Haut Fresnay in the Orne region of southern Normandy. We knew what we were looking for, and Le Haut Fresnay fitted the bill. We took early retirement and embarked on our mission to create a nice home for ourselves, using a derelict barn, and at the same time to turn the other farm buildings into holiday cottages. All are well established and have been in operation for some 20 years.

What makes this cottage unique

Now, after 20 years and with all the hard work behind us, we have our lovely home and 3 holiday cottages, to which many of our guests return year after year. They, like us, enjoy in particular the peace and tranquillity that is a special feature of Le Haut Fresnay. It is a place to relax and shake off the shackles of everyday life, a place to soak up the atmosphere, whether it be on the terrace under a starry summer sky, or in the comfort of the cottage living room with a glass of wine and the woodburning stove for company. Our cottages offer a home from home, with every modern convenience. If you happen to be disabled we can offer you La Fresnaie, which we designed and built expressly for disabled guests. For our part, we offer a warm welcome and we can provide whatever help is needed.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you to Nigel and Pauline for making our stay at La Fermette so wonderful. It was a home from home experience with a fully equipped kitchen, a spacious living/dining room which is comfortably furnished, the bedrooms are light and airy with lovely views across the Normandy countryside and the modern bath/shower room provides plenty of hot water. This holiday provided "just what the doctor ordered" with peace and tranquillity for a relaxing get away. We look forward to returning in the future and have no hesitation in recommending Le Haut Fresnay to anyone. G & C Baybutt (La Fermette)

We are just glad that we found this gite on the internet. We had trawled through many websites but most gites do not seem to be that comfortable to us. This one certainly is comfortable (Le Fournil). The setting is even better than we had anticipated. There is more birdsong here than anywhere else we know. P&M Marriott (Le Fournil)

Notes on accommodation: Le Haut Fresnay is a lovely place for family holidays, offering space for children to play, as well as privacy both outdoors and inside for parents. Whilst only La Fresnaie offers accommodation for the disabled and less mobile, La Fermette is spacious and is ideal for families. Also, with its 2 double bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, La Fermette will appeal to 2 couples holidaying together, or perhaps a 3-generation family. Le Fournil is a cosy cottage, ideal for a couple with, or without, children. For all our guests, we are on hand to offer help and advice about sightseeing, dining or even visiting the doctor if necessary. We can book restaurant tables and check opening hours. If you have a suitable device, you can access our wi-fi broadband. For the cooler months of the year, all 3 cottages have wood-burning stoves in the living rooms, with electric radiators as well in all rooms, controlled centrally in La Fermette and La Fresnaie, and individually in Le Fournil. Outside: The cottages all have private patio areas with garden furniture and barbecues, and are surrounded by extensive lawns and gardens, populated with trees, shrubs and perennial plants and there are several acres of grass meadow and woodland. The local fauna includes; red squirrels; deer, hares and rabbits; a wide variety of small birds; buzzards and occasionally, wild boar! A stream runs along the property boundary, opening into 2 ponds, one behind La Fermette, and providing even more wildlife. Birds of prey abound, buzzards and kestrels being the most common, but also sparrow hawks and hen harriers. As to larger birds, both types of woodpecker, and almost too many jays and magpies for the comfort of small birds. One of our guests listed 63 species of bird during his week here. We also see lizards, salamanders grass snakes and slow worms, but never (so far) an adder. At night, you can hear owls and midwife toads, and if you are lucky, find glow worms - on dark nights the stars are amazing.

La Fermette August 2014

  • 4 of 5

This was our third visit to Nigel and Paula’s gites, this time staying in La Fermette. We were last here about 15 years ago but the welcome was very much the same and it was very easy to catch up from where we had left off! It was a real pleasure to be here once again and relaxed in the knowledge that we would have a great holiday.

The gites are well appointed and comfortable and Nigel and Paula are most welcoming but also discrete – if you need their help or advice they are there.

Ceauce is very handy within a short bike ride away and yes the boulangerie opposite the church is definitely the best and friendliest however good or bad your French is! Just south of Ceauce is the start of a 40km former railway line ideal for walking or cycling. A small river runs through Ceauce with something of a man-made lake with plenty of trout.

Within easy reach of Le Haut Fresnay are places like Bagnoles and Domfront; further afield lie day trips to Granville, Avranches, Caen and of course the D-Day beaches. Fishing from the pier at Granville requires no licence but can get very crowded!

At the time of our visit in mid/late August we were able to take advantage of their over-laden fruit trees and also the blackberries which grow in abundance down the country lanes.

Well worth a visit is la Ferme des Martellières in Sept Forges where tasting of the local products is not too be missed; they are very accommodating and will welcome you even if just tasting.

Le Haut Fresnay is a lovely place to stay and allows the visitor to do as much or as little as is wanted energetic or otherwise; it's up to you to make the most of what is on offer; there is plenty of choice whether just sitting in a local cafe enjoying a coffee and croissant watching the day go by, cycling down the quiet county lanes, doing a bit of history or simply enjoying a bar-b-que at Le Haut Fresnay with a good glass of something red in the hand!

Our 2-week stay in La Fresnaie

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful holiday at le Fresnaie in July of this year. Nigel and Pauline are very helpful, and unobtrusive hosts, and they even ordered the beautiful weather for us! I would echo the comments of Margaret and Andrew Kirby in July 2012, regarding le Fresnaie, and the thought that has gone into making it wheelchair/disabled friendly, externally as well as internally. There is so much space, again inside and out, and it's position affords lots of privacy, without feeling 'cut off'. The kitchen is well equiped, with everything you could ask for. The British T.V. was a bonus, particulary as it was Wimbledon, and Andy Murry's triumph! It was lovely to be back in France again, it was our first trip since Dave's illness left him disabled four years ago. We had many camping holidays in France in the past, and it was good to be back again,in this rural and unspoilt part of the country. Thanks to Nigel and Pauline for a lovely holiday.
