About the property

Pretty atmospheric gite in Le Somail, on thCanal du Midi, Languedoc Roussillon, in Ancient Hamlet, Jazz In Summer, beaches 30-45 Mins , Mountains 30, Corbieres, good wine everywhere

This charming Gite with it's own canalside entrance, dates from the 17C. The Gite is on three floors, right next to the Canal du Midi with a stunning view of the ancient bridge (most photographed spot in the area) and the chapel, loved by all our guests. Beautiful in summer and atmospheric in winter, this romantic gite has private garden with swimming pool, The gite has it's own private terrace with BBQ, overlooking the garden, and its own private courtyard space which overlooks the canal with its drifting boats and gentle, lovely and happy ambience. The Canals tow paths provide lovely walks and cycle rides, whilst beaches are only 40 minutes away, the mountains 30 mins and rivers just a bike ride. You will be amazed and thrilled by the location, which has enthralled all our guests. The downstairs kitchen living room opens out onto a pretty terrace which overlooks the garden and pool.

Somail itself is known as the 'jewel' of the area and has several restaurants and a low key bar - plenty of sitting out by the water with a glass of wine, or a meal. There are also pretty little brocante boutiques and galleries with good work - wooden sculptures and bowls and paintings from the area by well know Denis Carrieire. There's also plenty to do if you fancy an active time - horse riding, canoeing twenty minutes away, small boat hire on the canal itself, relaxing walking and cycling as well as strenuous hiking!

The gite can be kept cool in summer by closing shutters and opening windows - as the French do, room fans available if you do get hot! The Gite is available all year for rent - and very popular! Linen and towels are provided. The property is cleaned at changeover, with fresh linens weekly. A recently refurbished and charming gite, perfecly placed to watch the famous bridge and the Canal, but far enough back to have a private feel. Le Somail is a very popular and beautiful place on the canal du midi. The gite is also suitable for a longer winter stay, perhaps for those looking for property in the area, and it is also a great place to stay in winter to relax, walk, cook, watch films, and generally have a very relaxed winter holiday. Private garden with 10 metre by 3 - 4 metre pool with easy steps at one end for sitting or playing with children. The pool is shared in high summer but not busy. Guests have plenty of decked and pebbled sitting out areas with teak sun loungers around the pool so that peace and privacy are maintained for perfect relaxation! Hammocks by the pool strung in the trees. Hire bikes bring the river close (10 minute ride), where you can swim and sunbathe. Our new bikes are available for hire, and we have an expert on great cycle routes, and special places by the river. The gite is also great to stay in during winter and autumn. With our experience of the area we can provide maps and advice for the many walks in the surrounding areas - including the Corbieres and Cathar country. The peace and quiet of the off season break provides a great chance to unwind, cook, with ingredients from the local markets, cycle, walk, watch films, all next to a misty canal and a slow burning stove

Fabulous Authentic Gite On The Canal Du Midi

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful peaceful setting in one of the most beautiful villages in the Aude.. Very pretty and authentic gite with a pool and fantastic gardens and views of the Canal Du Midi. The gite is set over 3 floors and is beautifully presented and so charming. The owner Sue is a lovely person and extremely knowledgeable and always around should you require anything not that we ever did as it was so perfect. Ideal base for house hunting as i was at the time , the morning sunrise and the evening sunsets are breathtaking.. Thank you i shall return very soon..

Uniquely atmospheric and all you could wish for

  • 5 of 5

This gite is spacious, well equipped and well maintained in a stunning setting with a lovely pool in the garden. The canal is a stones through away, the area is exquisitely beautiful with excellent restaurants but a few yards away and lots of interesting places to visit nearby. Sue is unobtrusive but friendly and very helpful when needed. We would definitely recommend this accommodation and hope to go back ourselves in the future.

Wonderful Relaxing Holiday

  • 5 of 5

Stayed for 4 nights only wish it had been 14. Superb location overlooking the Canal, we would have a glass of red on an evening as a nightcap and enjoy the view from the Juliet balcony wile sitting on the comfy settee. The well thought out Pool area was a great relief from the 30+ degree heat and the Gite was spacious, well equipped and everything worked just fine. Sue (the host) always enquired after our needs and Barney (the Dog) was a friendly little co-host too.

A week on the canal du midi

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful week in the gite. It is clean, enjoys a perfect location with a picture book view. It is well laid out with everything you could want for a relaxing week on the canal.

Fresh croissants every morning, restaurants that prepare local produce all on your doorstop.

We took advantage of the rental bikes on offer and found it a lovely way to explore the nearby towns and vineyards.

Canal Heaven

  • 5 of 5

Having stayed at thus Gite for the previous 3 years and our holiday booked for 2014 we know a warm welcome awaits in Le Somail. Fantastic hosts, beautiful setting and a truly French feel this Gite ticks all the boxes for our family of 5. The canal proves a constantly changing backdrop while cycling, strolling or enjoying a glass of Vin! Perfect.

Le Somail: The Gite

  • 4 of 5

We stayed in the Gite for one week during July 2013 and we loved it. It's an incredibly idyllic spot. It was just the two of us so we had lots of space but with two en-suite bedrooms it could work for four - if you don't mind being cosy. The little kitchen was well equipped for our needs, the bed was very comfortable, the shower pressure was good. It's been very nicely decorated in a simple, rustic fashion. The garden, BBQ and pool areas are also very nicely done. We shared the pool with a young family who were staying in the house at the time. If I am brutally honest it was a bit awkward initially, but it worked out fine in the end - there are plenty of sun loungers for everyone.

We chose to holiday in this part of France as we were going to a wedding in the area. Not knowing a great deal about the region we were very impressed to discover we had the picture postcard view of the Canal du Midi and the medieval bridge. It was lovely to be woken by the sounds of the ducks and geese each morning and to watch the cyopu (water rats) swim in the canal at night. It was very relaxing. You can just sit with a glass of rose and watch the boats go by in the evening. Book lovers should also check out the cavernous antique book store on the opposite bank and the local shop for bread is the Tomate - a yellow barge moored on the same side. We hired bikes and did a few easy rides along the canal. We also found it very well placed for day trips to Narbonne and its beaches, Beziers and the Black Mountains. There are also lots of local spots for river swimming.

Car: recommended

Special interest holidays:

Iyengar yoga guidance available. Locally - great Malay Indian cookery classes are available, and classes in watercolour. Winter - this is a great place for some complete peace and quiet, and contemplation. A place to watch films next to the gently chugging burner, and to go for some stunning winter walks on beaches, mountains, the Corbieres with their Cathar castles, and the canal itself. French markets will provide great food to cook, and there are restaurants outside Somail warmed by fires to eat out in. We can also arrange horse riding locally.

The Mediterranean coast is 30 - 40 minutes drive away. The lovely Chalet beaches of Gruissan (where Betty Blue was filmed) being our favourite, also the flamingo filled Etangs. The mountains are 30 minutes drive, here you can walk, hike and canoe. The rivers Cesse and Aude are close by, lovely for picnicking and swimming. This is also close to Cathare country - follow the sights of the Da Vinci Code. Boat hire, canoeing, riding, bikehire all available close by.

The airports of Perpignan, Bezier Cap D'Agde, Carcasonne are all within an hours drive, Montpelier just over an hour. Toulouse is two hours, Girona (Barcelona) is about two and a half hours. All serviced by Budget Airlines Ryan Air and Easyjet. Calais is 800 miles.

The lovely city of Narbonne, full of restaurants and famous for it's everyday foodmarket, 'Les Halles' (7.30 - 12 every day) and cathedral is fifteen minutes drive. Bezier is forty minutes, the famous Montpelier one and a bit hours. Carcasonne, whose famous castle was the inspiration for Walt Disney's Snow White castle is 45 minutes. There are many pretty local villages including the beautiful mountain village of Minerve.

Further Details:

The area has many food markets, and vide greniers. Occuring somewhere in the region almost every weekend in season, these are small local markets (brocantes) selling everything from bric a brac to beds to goats cheese. There are also many summer festivals in the outlying villages, including a large music festival in Narbonne and the huge summer festival in Bezier. In this area you can go to the beach, discover the many wine caves, enjoy great seafood as well as fantastic local produce, go the mountains for stunning beauty, walking and canoe hire to wind down the beautiful rivers. Le Somail has several restaurants, and there are many others in the area. The canal itself provides lovely walks, bike rides and boat hire, and there is horse riding available at local stables where you can ride in the mountains (Bize), or through rivers - up the road. For fishermen there is the canal itself and the nearby rivers. We're in a rural area, but just 15 minutes drive from the lovely city of Narbonne.
