About Jack and Christine Boyd

On Owners Direct since 2008.

Our home is in the UK but we fell in love with the Greek Islands many years ago and have been regular holiday visitors ever since. We hope you will be equally charmed by the tranquil relaxing environment of Makrygialos and this less well known and less commercialised part of Crete. We like to offer a friendly accessible service to a holiday that is strikingly different from package holidays and basic self-catering accommodation with few facilities. We want our guests to feel right at home and so we have designed our villas around al fresco living with lots of balcony space. Everything you need for a great holiday is within easy reach, and we never get tired of returning here each year, with superb beaches and lots of activities on hand to help us unwind.

Jack and Christine Boyd purchased this villa in 2008

Why Jack and Christine Boyd chose Makry Gialos

We bought a villa in this part of Crete because it's such a lovely unspoiled corner of the island. On arrival each time we visit we immediately unwind and relax into the gentle pace of life. There is no doubt that Makrygialos is a very special place. The villagers are very hospitable so above all it's a very friendly place, with everything you need within an easy stroll. The shallow sandy bay is stunning, with plenty of secluded coves and quiet easy-to-get-to beaches all along the coast. We especially love the picturesque harbour and promenade, with lively waterside tavernas, restaurants and cafes.

What makes this villa unique

A great advantage of our location within Makrygialos village is that everything is easily accessible and so unless you intend to do some sightseeing a hire car is unnecessary. You can stroll at a leisurely pace to the nearby beaches, shops and tavernas within 5 -10 minutes of the villas.

One of the many benefits of our site is that you have equal opportunity to be private or to socialise. The villas are offset from each other so you can sunbathe on the balconies in privacy. If you like to meet new people on holiday then our pool is a great focal point to socialise, where friendships are easily forged and playmates for children are easily found.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a truly wonderful time in Crete. Jack and Christine's villa is absolutely fantastic. It had every essential and luxury we could think of. The various balconies provide sun, shade and different views of the pool, mountains and sea. The pool area was a great place to sunbathe and swim. The pool was really quiet (we staying mid June 2015) and a good size for swimming. Rosemary, the site manager, was very helpful and a mine of information for places to visit. We wished we could have stayed longer but it was a great place to escape to as soon as our daughter had finished her last GCSE. We loved the beaches, and they were all in walking distance and so very different. The hotel beaches directly opposite the apartment are really nice and had good sand. The “Green Beach" (Diaskari) was quiet and a bit rugged. The surf was up when we were there which was great fun, and the taverna was excellent. The tavernas near Grapevines provided good quality food at good prices. The Stefado at Gabbiano’s is an absolute must. The small supermarket near to Grapevines was adequate and provided for all our essentials, especially the fantastic local fruit. We didn’t venture too far away from Makrigialos. We definitely would love to return to the villa and Makrigialos in the future. Make sure you check out the Visitors Book on your arrival as this has a wealth of useful tips and comments to help you plan your holiday.

Please feel free to use the above and thank you for providing a lovely apartment.

Best wishes

Fabulous holiday at Grapevines Villas

  • 4 of 5

We had a wonderful stay at Grapevines. It was a perfect place for our family with our own villa and a beautiful communal pool allowing us to meet other familes whilst having our own space. The location is fantastic- close to some beautiful beaches, lovely tavernas and stunning scenery. We loved it and loved exploring Crete for the very first time. Rosemary and Niko were brilliant at sorting out any problems we had. Jack and Christine's notes on what to do were also a great guide on things to do. We loved it- thank you.

This really was a superb holiday with everything that we hoped for, for a lovely relaxing family holiday. We were a family of 4 with a small child and an older son of 18. We usually stay in hotels all inclusive but like to explore and not tie ourselves to hotel catering and lifestyle. I have to say this gorgeous place did not disappoint - I dare say we will never stay in another hotel again. The villa itself was attractive and fitted with all the modern appliances we have at home. We did have a few concerns about the open staircase because we have a small child but Christine and Rosemary made some alterations to make this safe and we were delighted. The grounds were so well maintained and cared for, making it a lovely place to sit during the day. The pool was always immaculate and clean and because we travelled quite late in the season it felt like our own private pool which was a lovely bonus. The villa is situated within an easy 5 min walk to the nearest beach unless you want to walk across the road to the hotel and use their beach. On route to the beach there are some lovely tavernas that serve the most delicious food (I didn't have one single meal that I didn't thoroughly enjoy) and the waiters/waitresses were so friendly and keen to embrace you without being over powering. We often went to a taverna for a quick drink and were given free snacks and tasters from their own lunch which was so endearing. The Greeks also didn't pester you outside the shops etc to try to get you to visit their shop which you often find in other countries. We got the feeling that most of the tavernas and shops were family run and very welcoming. There was a harbour/port a very short walk from the beach and we would often spend our evenings there enjoying more of the Greek hospitality. Rosemary and Nikos run the villas and were very attentive if we needed their assistance. We were also lucky enough to meet Christine and Jack on our visit as there were also enjoying their holiday at the same time - they were also so friendly and helpful and genuinely wanted us to enjoy our stay here. You can tell that this is a place where people take a huge amount of pride, and the personal service they offer is so very much appreciated and for us first timers travelling without a travel agent was very reassuring to us. I honestly could not fault this holiday at all. Thanks guys, it really was a super holiday, we will definitely be back. Clare & Ian Summers x

Owner's Response: Many thanks for your review. We have passed on your generous comments to Rosemary and Niko. You seem to have found the best that Makrigialos has to offer, with its family-run tavernas and shops, plus wonderful beaches and a delightful harbour area. We try to do our best for guests; "We're here to help!" is our motto so it's lovely when we get feedback that tells us we live up to it. Best wishes, Jack and Christine

Fantastic property with everything we could have asked for - even an extensive DVD collection! The property, pool and grounds were immaculate and extremely well maintained and Rosemary was very helpful and friendly. We loved the local beach and the many restaurants/ tavernas to choose from - supermarket very close by was handy too! We will definitely return!

Great Family Holiday

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the Grapevines for a week with our teenage son and 6 year old. It was fantastic. The villa was clean, well equipped and beautiful and the pool and gardens were immaculate. The village was stuffed with great tavernas and there were several beaches close by. Jack and Christine - with Rosemary the caretaker - couldn't have been more helpful and accommodating. We had a great week. Yes, it's quite a long drive from the airport, but it's a wonderful part of Crete. We loved Pefki Gorge.

From the initial enquiry about dates & cost, to our arrival & week stay, the customer service from Jack & Christine has been excellent. Quick replies to emails, flexibility & car hire all made the overall booking easy & stress free. The villa is of a very good standard, well equipped, with plenty of room for 4 adults. We loved that it's right next to the lovely big pool (which we had to ourselves every day!) & we could just wander in & out for drinks & snacks. Grapevines is perfectly situated for numerous local tavernas & shops, all extremely hospitable with superb food. There is also a fab quiet beach just a 5 min stroll away, again with a great little taverna. We had freshly caught fish & lobster there one lunchtime - superb! The only downside is its quite a drive from the airport, but the roads are very good and the scenery is stunning! We will most definitely be back.....but next time for longer!!

This villa was fabulous. Location beautiful Had a lovely time and would certainly recommend. I think car is needed if you want to explore but if you want to stay in the area then no. Takes approx 2 hours from Heraklion airport. My only critismwould be the bed in the double room is rock hard and we found it very uncomfortable. Would have given 100% if not for the bed but certainly everything else was great.

Owner's Response: We are delighted you found our villa "fabulous" and rated it as 5 star. Thank you. Regarding your only criticism, it's difficult to accommodate to every personal preference. Other guests have commented they have enjoyed many wonderful night's sleep in our peaceful villa and no wonder - slatted bed, sprung mattress, and padded topper. As owners who pride ourselves on going that extra mile, we'll keep trying to please!

Villa is also ideally situated for road and trail cyclists, mountain bikers, keen walkers, bird-watchers, with access to magnificent gorge walks, starting within walking distance (Pefki Gorge) or a short car trip. Nearby, Pervolakia Gorge is home to nesting Griffin Vultures. You can see these magnificent birds wheeling overhead as you walk the gorge. It also has rock climbing on bolt-protected routes and for the more experienced climber there are mountain crags and beach cliffs as yet unexplored. Further afield, the Nekron Gorge (Dead Gorge) is a great walk with beach and tavernas to refresh you on your return. Also nearby on the road to Sitia you can see Eleonora's falcons. We just had to stop the car and spend a happy 10 minutes watching them swoop overhead!

Makrigialos (which means Long Beach) occupies its own bay in South East Crete, 25km / 30 minutes drive east of Ierapetra, along a coastline of secluded coves and fine quiet easy-to-get-to beaches, and 35km/40 minutes south of Sitia in the Lassithi region. With its picturesque harbour and promenade, waterside tavernas, restaurants and cafes, the village is lively but still unspoiled allowing you to enjoy real Cretan hospitality.

It is easily accessible from both of Crete's airports at Heraklion (1hr 20) and Sitia (40). Car hire is not essential as everything you need for a relaxing holiday is close at hand. Easy driving directions are available from us prior to your journey.

The drive from the North to the South of Crete takes in some of the most beautiful and breathtaking scenery possible. Nearest major town is Ierapetra, an easy 30 minute drive along the coastal road.

Further Details:

Nearby beaches have watersports facilities. Mountain bikes and quad bikes are available for hire in village. Horse riding available in Ierapetra. Many nearby attractions include the gorges of Pefki, Dasaki and Pevrolakia, day boat trip to nearby Koufonissi island, wine-tasting at the Kaspa monastery and traditional Cretan evenings in Pefki and by the harbour throughout the summer. Makrigialos also plays host to the popular Casa dei Mezzo music festival in June each year.
