About this property

Luxury olive mill with heated pool, sea views within walking distance of Ostuni

Masseria Il Trappeto is a stunningly restored olive mill just 1 mile from the historic town of Ostuni, which is set in an an ancient olive grove. It has a heated pool. The Evening Standard described it as 'the perfect place to come for a week with a gang of friends.'

It has 7 bedrooms and 7 bathrooms. It has a large outside terrace with a stone table by the pool that seats 14. WIFI AVAILABLE.

There is also limonetto, a private party area just 50m from the front door, which has its own outside kitchen, dance floor, table for 18, open fireplace and lemon trees.....

There is also another chill-out area in the walled garden which is a pergola with sofas and table football by the large heated swimming pool. This now has a beautiful Rajasthani canopy which we had specially made for us in Jodhpur. We also have a ping pong table.

The property is surrounded by terraces on the first floor with magnificent views of Ostuni and the sea. For cooler times we have underfloor heating and two open fireplaces. There is a flat screen TV and internet connection and a music system (CDs and ipods) for music throughout the ground floor. There is a 60sqm sitting room which has the original olive presses, and a large kitchen, with 3 sinks, a large stone table in front of a working fireplace and an island.

The property is set in a peaceful 10,000 acre olive grove, with trees over 1,000 years old. It is a UNESCO World Heritage sit. Yet, it is a 5-minute drive or 20-minute walk to Ostuni. There are no other occupied buildings within sight.

I am always available to answer any questions you have about the villa, flights and facilities. You can call, text or email me anytime. And we also have an Italian house manager, who speaks fluent English and lives 5 minutes away. He can organise a cook and outings.

Wonderful converted Olive Mill and great hosts
The house, pool and gardens are wonderful. A real experience. Ottavio the property manager is always available and helped us when needed throughout the week. The views up to Ostuni from the house are just great, and its not far at all into the town by car or on foot. We had a really lovely week there. Ostuni is also a great place for a dinner out and a wonder around. A lovely old town. Only minor negatives would be the weak wifi coverage which could be fixed easily with a few well positioned boosters, and also the lack of a microwave which was a bit inconvenient with a baby in the party. Recommended!

Beautiful Holiday!
Masseria Il Trappeto was even more beautiful than the photos on the website. Our extended family of 13 spent a wonderful week here in mid June. The spaces worked so well and were large enough for everyone to find somewhere to relax. A wonderful base to explore stunning Puglia. The owner Josephine was extremely helpful with local information which we used to plan our week in the area. The manager of the property Ottavio spoke fluent English and could not have been more helpful with any requests we had. He helped organise transport for our group, also a photographer for the family birthday and we had a great cooking class and dinner one night. The pool was just fantastic with the very warm weather. Although the property is a few kilometres from Ostuni several of our group made the 30 min walk there each morning coming back with wonderful pasteries. We would really love to return to this property one day - the restoration of this Olive Mill has been done perfectly..

A special location for a special celebration
Overall we had a fantastic stay at il Trapetto for my mother’s 70th birthday. We arrived on an early flight and were kindly allowed to stay by the pool while the villa was cleaned. Once we had settled in our contact Ottavio visited the next day to book taxis for the trips we had planned. During our stay he was responsive to our enquiries about local restaurants and beaches – he even arranged a pizza delivery for us! The property was lovely, with well-appointed furnishings and a well-resourced kitchen. There was a generous amount of living and sleeping space for us all (9 adults and 4 children) and entertainment for kids like the table football was an added bonus. The limonatta was also a lovely place to hold our evening meals. The pool was wonderful – during the day and night – but did need a mid-week clean because it is natural sea water. We had two relatively minor issues with the property. The first was the electricity, one of the dishwashers wouldn't work when the air conditioning was on in a few bedrooms. This meant that we couldn't put the dishwashers on at bedtime when we were all in our rooms. While we were there the electricity also tripped twice whilst we were out dining at the limonatta (there was a problem with the irrigation for the olive groves) which was frustrating. But in most instances this was resolved by Ottavio relatively quickly. The other issue was that due to the quite remote location of the villa there is no rubbish collection offered by the local council nor by the owners. In the end rather than using our holiday time to drive to the local collection facility we arranged for a private collection by Ottavio for €40. Ostuni town itself was beautiful - perfect for just wandering around and soaking up the atmosphere. We had a lovely dinner (all 13 of us!) at Osteria del Tempo Perso which we booked well in advance and the gelatos at Cremeria all Scalla were a big hit with the kids.

About the host

Hosted by James Pembroke

Host profile image
Josephine and James Pembroke have two properties on VRBO as they are easily the best Website in the UK.
In 2005, we started looking for a small villa abroad and by accident we bought Masseria Il Trappeto, (IT2578) which was a very large ruin which had not been used since the 1940's. That was a vast restoration project, which was achieved amazingly swiftly by Italian craftsmen. We love the area and the food.

Why they chose this property

We came to Puglia and fell in love with the food, the Italians and the climate. We were looking for a family villa not in need of much restoration. We found a very large two storey ancient olive mill, which had been derelict since the 1970s. Within a year we had totally restored Il Trappeto into a luxury villa while still retaining and enhancing it's strong Pugliese character.
Without the fantastic enthusiasm and skill of the local craftsmen and our brilliant Project Manager Ottavio we could not have completed this vast project.

What makes this property unique

Masseria Il Trappeto is within an Ancient Olive Grove and is secluded and private. It has amazing views of the old town of Ostuni and the Adriatic Sea. It is a 20 minute walk or a 5 minute drive up to Ostuni with it's many restaurants, bars and fabulous shopping,. It is a 10 minute drive to the beaches and Villanova our nearest charming port with very good fish shops and the best foccacia. Il Trappeto is unique as most large properties in the area are b&b's but we are a private villa with a heated pool and an optional cook. Our villa is wonderful at low season we designed it with that in mind. We have underfloor heating, 2 working fires and piles of books and DVD's; we love it for Christmas, walks on the beaches and out for a long lunch (very reasonable too).
