Ski Apartment in Briancon, Serre Chevalier, France - Next to Ski Lift and River - Ideal for Winter and Summer Sports

The apartment has been recently extensively refurnished and equipped and has been redecorated in May 2014. It is bright, airy and easy to keep sorted. The apartment can sleep 8 but has only one bathroom and toilet so is probably better suited to between 4 and 6 people. It is an excellent location for skiing being next to a fast cabin ski lift with ski hire, lift pass and ski school all within the same building as the apartment. Serre Chevalier is an excellent ski resort, regularly rated as one of the best in France and is great value for money. In the Summer, Spring and Autumn it is a good base for all manner of Alpine activities - walking, white-water, climbing and mountain biking. The lifts are open for many of the summer months to allow easy access to high alpine paths and downhill mountain bike trails. If you choose to base yourself in Briancon you have all the facilities of a tourist town and you also have direct lift access to the mountains.

We are both from Leeds (school romance !) and have twin boys now in their early 20's. We now live near the Yorkshire Dales and have semi retired from our career's of policing and teaching.

Fabulous location

Great location, near to the Porel ski lift. The flat is a few floors about the ski hire shops and close to a number of bars and restaurants. The supermarkets were only a short walk. We walked each morning to the Boulangerie for fresh bread and croissants. Private parking is ideal and the fact that bedding and cleaning was included helped both with packing and work at the end of the holiday. Michel & Denise on site spoke very good english and were a great deal of help with local information. The flat was well equipped avoiding the standard 6 of everything and had ample pots and pans. Contacting the owner was easy and payment was no issue.

Location

From the Owner

We chose our apartment as it was high up with great views, south facing and was at the end of the block so it has windows on 3 sides letting in lots of light. Skiing is hard enough without lugging loads of kit via cars and buses to get to the slopes. We are next to the main access lift and can ski back to the flat !

Coast/Beach:

In the summer the Guisane and Durance rivers provide plenty of whitewater opportunities. There are several Alpine lakes within easy driving distance.

Travel:

The nearest airport is Turin (1.5 hours) but Grenoble, Chambery, Cuneo & Nimes (2 hours), Marseille (3 hours), Milan and Nice (4 hours) are good alternatives . Calais is 600 miles with 540 of this on the Autoroute. Briancon has an end of line train station (5-10 minutes walk from the flat) with an overnight sleeper service from Paris arriving 0830. A car is not necessary as the lift is next to the apartment and shops within easy walking distance.

Distances:

The apartment is in the lower part of Briancon next to the Prorel ski lift and Guisane river. It is 15 minutes drive to Italy and the villages of the Sestriere region. The Ecrins National Park and the Queyras Regional Park border Briancon town. The Guisane and Durance rivers merge near the apartment and both have plenty of white-water possibilities. In the summer the ski shops directly below the flat rent out mountain bikes.

Further Details:

Briancon is the highest town in Europe and in July 2008 was awarded Unesco World Heritage status. The old town is a walled medieval citadel and the famous Vauban forts ring the town controlling the valleys to Turin, Gap and Grenoble. The apartment is in the modern part of town with all amenities close to hand. Unlike many alpine villages Briancon stays fully open after the ski season as it is an important regional town. There are plenty of shops, bars and restaurants within easy walking distance. A reasonable sized supermarket is 5 minutes walk and 2 hypermarkets are 5 minutes drive. There is an 'Aquapark' 5 minutes walk away and Mounetier Les Bains thermal spa (recently refurbished) is a short drive up the valley. There is horse riding, climbing, mountain biking and karting available within a few miles of Briancon.

  • Notes on accommodation: Smokers are requested to use the living room balcony or the balcony by the front door. A 100 euro refundable deposit is taken locally against damage. Outside: There is a south facing balcony with folding table and chairs. Views of the alps. Free car parking is available in a barrier controlled car park for which we have a pass. Utility Room: Iron & ironing board available in the flat plus a hair dryer. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: All bedding is included in the rental pricand towels can be obtained locally for 7 euros per set (bath towel and hand towel). Michel and Denise (who is English) look after the apartment and will meet you to hand over keys and explain how everything works. Other: The hall has plenty of hooks for wet clothing and a large cupboard with plenty of space for cases and clothes. The balcony has a folding table and chairs with views down to the Guisane river directly below.
