Why Miss Josy Wade chose Brighouse

Ravensprings is a gorgeous example of an Arts and Crafts Victorian House when I saw it advertised it just leapt out of the page. At the time the House was in desperate need and deserved restoration. As an unlisted and unprotected large property it was under threat of being converted into six apartments or eight apartments due to it's size which would have been a great shame.

At the time I thought that the central yet quiet location and the fact that most amenities were available on the doorstep made this a very desirable place to be. The location means that within 15 - 20 minutes you can be in the countryside or City Centre which offered the best of both worlds.

What makes this house unique

Ravensprings is a corner House and South Facing and thus sunny and light inside. It is also slightly elevated so it seems very private inside. Many of the original features were still in tact although a few had been lost during the 1960's / 70's. The fact that one of the previous owners had been part of the Miller's Oils family mean that a lot of money had been spent on the House during the late 20's, 30's & 40's. When the famous liner the Mauretania had been refitted in the early 1930's the owners had gone to the sale and purchased a stateroom of mahogany panelling and over-mantels and doors and other fitments. They then knocked the reception and sitting room into one enormous room (34' x 16') and fitted most of these antique furnishings in it. At the same time they had ornate and plaster beams to run the length of this high ceilinged room which are painted to look like they were carved from timber. The views from the dining room window was predominantly of Ravensprings Park. This was created as one of the owner's particular interests as it has a model railway which was donated to the Brighouse and Rastrick Model Society in the 50's. This is open to the public on about once a month and to see Father Christmas driving an model train full of children from your window is quite a novelty.

The dining room was in fact meant to have been used as a billiards room at one time (thus the rise and fall over head lighting) and the Owner was meant to have had friendly games with Joe Davis (then retired) the World Champion Snooker player in this room.

Another unique feature was the conversion of the cellar (out of bounds to visitors for health and safety reasons) into an air raid shelter during the First World War. There is a short tunnel leading to the lower garden. This was more recently (4 years ago) used as part of the film set of a spooky version of Alice in Wonderland on release as the indie film Red Kingdom Rising.

Beautiful stay for hen parties

  • 5 of 5

We all loved our stay at Ravensprings. Josy, the owner, and Caroline, were fantastic, easy to contact, and very flexible. We got early access to decorate the house before the bride arrived, and both were contactable late at night when we had a carbon monoxide alarm going off (low batteries). Caroline also texted as we'd left some personalised wine glasses behind, incase we wanted to keep them.

The house itself was beautiful, plenty of space!! Lots of bathrooms and bedrooms for our large party, with ample parking. The kitchen had everything we needed, there was even a small milk in the fridge, just incase you've arrived empty handed (oh and a large stash of biscuits). Everything we needed and more. Would definitely stay agian

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for this lovely review. Caroline and I are very pleased that it all went so well as there was so much planning involved in your celebrations. I'm glad that you contacted me about the alarm as we have regular gas checks and knew it would only be a battery - so apologies that we hadn't changed it! (Opening a window to air the place at this time of year could be pretty invigorating!). Either way it doesn't seem to have spoiled your fun. Caroline says thank you for leaving the House nice and tidy too which always helps. We would both welcome you and all or some of your group back to Ravensprings for another celebration some time in the future. Meanwhile thanks again and Best Wishes, Josy and Caroline.

Lovely place for large group

  • 4 of 5

This is a wonderful house for a large group. The bedrooms are unique and very comfortable. They are double beds so be aware that you will have to share a bed. The great lounge was perfect for our games and party. The lovely dining room with the hatch from the kitchen worked a treat.

The kitchen has all you need for cooking, 2 ovens, double sink and pots and pans to use.

We spent all our time in the house apart from heading out to an activity centre. So we didn't explore the area. It is residential, the town seems ok. Has supermarkets and takeaways if you need. Could possibly do with bigger bins inside the house.

Amazing Hen Weekend at Ravensprings

  • 5 of 5

We visited Ravensprings for a Hen Do for 17 girls. Josy (owner) and Caroline (housekeeping) were so helpful prior. All information was provided clearly up front and we were even allowed in early to set up! The house itself is massive, full of classic charm, with all amenities and such a variety of different rooms to accommodate everyone. The house is clean and the beds are comfy, there are a zillion bathrooms and enough fridges for plenty of food and prosecco. The location is really easy to get to and there is loads of on and off street parking! I think we had a total of 5/6 cars between us. A Taxi for 8 is only £35 one way to Leeds which was great for getting everyone there for a fun filled night out. Overall the weekend was perfect, the bride to be had an incredible time and everything ran really smoothly. Thank you to Josy and Caroline for making it a weekend never to forget!

Owner's Response: Hi Charlotte, Thank you for this lovely review of your stay at Ravensprings. Caroline and I are delighted that you and your group (especially the bride) had such a memorable Hen Weekend. Thank you also for the info about the price of a taxi for 8 guests as this beats the price quoted 4 years ago! I do hope that you and some of your group at least will be able to return and enjoy another celebration at Ravensprings. It makes all the work worthwhile when we have such positive feedback. I hope that the Wedding Day is at least equally as successful. All Best Wishes for the future to the Bride and Groom and of course to you, Thanks again, Josy and of course Caroline.

Great large house ideal for family get together

  • 4 of 5

This is an ideal house for a family get together . Perfect location for people coming from North and South by car and train.

Despite a last minute problem with a bedroom, both housekeeper Caroline and Owner communicated well with me and all was fine .Nice large kitchen, dining room and lounge where everyone could sit together.

The recommendations in the information sheet were extensive and the external caterers we had on one evening were excellent.

We all decided that we would return to Ravensprings .

Owner's Response: Hi Sonia, Thank you for this lovely review and I'm so pleased that everything went so well for you at Ravensprings for your weekend get together. The last minute catastrophe aversion with the downstairs bedroom was much appreciated and I can confirm a new bed is now in place! Caroline says thank you for leaving the House nice and tidy and we both look forward to welcoming you all again in the future. Best Wishes and Thanks again, Josy & Caroline.
