We are your average 2x4 family-Mum, Dad, 14year old boy and 10 year old girl.We live in Ireland so we like to get away for a blast of sun once a year-more if we are lucky. We like quiet places where we can relax and do nothing if we want but with lots of activities in the area if we feel energetic. Tavira is a perfect location for us-far from the madding crowd of the Western Algarve and yet we can easily get there if we want a day out in a water park or a day at one of the beaches there.We love good food-so shopping in Tavira's daily market is a must-everything is so cheap compared to at home.We love eating in the many restaurants Tavira has to offer and have our favourites listed in our visitors book. Why Helen Rafferty chose Tavira

We bought our apartment in Tavira as we fell in love with the town on holidays in Fuzeta and Cabanas.On both occasions we spent most of our time in Tavira- wandering around the quaint streets, admiring the different types of architecture and of course the doors with their knockers shaped like hands.We sampled some of the restaurants on offer and wanted to go back for more. If you are looking for sophistication,nightclubs and all night revelling then Tavira is not for you-it is more about families,relaxed dining, people watching from one of the pavement cafes and long days at the beach or the pool.The main square in the evening is filled with locals usually retired sitting and watching the world go by.There is a great deal of history to be explored and it is a real town not just a resort.

What makes this apartment unique

The best thing about the apartment is that you can stay there without the need of a car. If you spend a lot of time running around in a car as most of us do nowadays it is a nice change and a real switch off to take a holiday from it, as well as the rain! On a trip in October this year we arranged for a taxi to take us from the airport.The walk to town is easy, we walked to the new shopping centre-did a grocery shop and took a taxi back for less than €5.We walked to the market another day and bought loads of fresh fruit and vegetables. You can walk to the ferry stop on the river which takes you over to the Ila de Tavira beach and the bus station is 5 mins away if you want to go to Santa Luzia or Faro. All the restaurants are a walk away-so give yourself a real holiday and ditch the car.

NOTE-as the complex is on a hill overlooking the river there is a long flight of steps to negotiate in order to walk to town-there are also steps within the complex before reaching the apartment-so if you have difficulty with steps this apartment would not be for you.

"We Had a fantastic stay in your apartment at the end of June. Would highly recommend it. Lovely small complex...but spacious enough for my three boys to have plenty room to run around. 

The pool is a great place to relax and the shaded area is very handy for little kids to escape the hot sun.

Notes on accommodation: The property is fully air-conditioned/heated there is a unit in each of the bedrooms and one in the living room. There is a large selection of DVDs/videos plenty of children's movies, a small library of books and games for all the family eg chess and boggle. Our apartment is licensed by the Camara Municipal de Tavira,which means it has been inspected and complies with their safety regulations for fire, gas, etc. Outside: There is a small private garden with patio at the front of the apartment accessed via patio doors, it is furnished with table and chairs. There is a private inner courtyard furnished with table and chairs and perfect for alfresco dining as it is accessed from the kitchen as well as the living room and has a gas barbeque. There is a narrow shared balcony off both bedrooms accessed via sliding doors which can be shaded by an awning which is manually operated. The large pool is set in the landscaped gardens and there is also a shallow section suitable for small children. There is a large paved patio which has a shaded area overlooking this children's pool-or you can choose to sit on the loungers on the deck overlooking the large pool. The pool as yet is not fenced off from the garden but a hedge forms a boundary on one side-therefore it is important that parents are vigilant when young children are using the pool as there is no lifeguard. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Quality bed linen and towels are provided. End of stay cleaning is included. A brief clean,change of towels and bed linen is included in a 2 week stay.Beach towels are included in the price if you wish to have them let us know. Other: There is an inner courtyard accessed from the kitchen and the living room via glass doors. It is furnished with a terracotta table and chairs and there is a gas fired BBQ. clean apartment in quiet neightbourhood

The apartment is close to Tavira´s restaurants, yet in a quiet neightbourhood. There are steps to go down to the center and it is only ten min away. We had an one year old with us, and there was no problem carry him in the pram down the stairs. The apartment is fully equipped and has a lot of space. The area around the apartment was very nice. They also helped us to get sheets to the baby cot, even if it was not included. The only negative is that we had a couple of ants invasion in the kitchen and the bedrooms.

Fabulous apartment and pools, walking distance to beautiful Tavira.

The management team were great, Denise showed us the way to the apartment and we arrived earlier than usual as the apartment was ready for us, which made for a relaxed start to our visit! The apartment is really well designed and beautifully decorated with art and ornaments. The facilities are excellent too - I think they have everything you would need in the well stocked kitchen and the lots of games, DVDs and even beach toys that our family appreciated! There were also helpful touches such as hand soap and toilet rolls in the bathrooms, and beach towels which were really useful! The property is well managed and lots of useful information is provided. It feels like it is well loved by the Raffertys and we could understand why, it is such a sweet apartment with large well appointed rooms located around a little courtyard, which creates light as well as outside space. In the grounds are the large swimming and paddling pools and lots of green space and beyond these the riverside walk into lovely Tavira. There are a lot of steps or a long winding route down to the river which we just about managed with our toddler (sometimes with the buggy) but this could be too much for older visitors - there is good car parking though! We only stayed for a few nights at the end of our holiday, so it wasn't really long enough - a good excuse to go back! We did manage to eat at D'Gusta (luckily a storm held people off that night, but they wiped down some tables outside after the rare rain shower) and we enjoyed their tapas at this popular and busy restaurant, over the other side of the blue bridge. We took the boat to Tavira beach and our older boys also enjoyed the futsal pitch close to the bus station. We are very appreciative of Helen and the family for letting us stay in this fabulous holiday apartment and to their excellent management team for their help and flexibility. We love Tavira and this is a great apartment, which we hope we get the opportunity to return to!

A fantastic family holiday

We had a lovely time staying in the apartment and exploring Tavaria. Helen was really helpful before we left and the apartment was brilliant for us. It felt like a real treat staying there and the pool and grounds were really well set out for our 2 year old and a 5 year old to happily play. The walk into town was easy, with lots of lovely streets, cafes and restaurants to explore. We didn't hire a car but used the buses and taxis a few times when we wanted to explore further out of town. The boat trip to the beach was a great adventure and it was really helpful to have a beach umbrella and buckets and spades to borrow in the apartment. Thank you so much, we had such a lovely time none of us wanted to come home!!

Fantastic Ground Floor Apartment

We had a fantastic stay in Helen's apartment. Its really well equipped with everything you need for a fantastic holiday, it felt like a real home from home. Really relaxing grounds and good size swimming pool. We love Tavira and enjoyed once again the fabulous beaches and restaurants (all very reasonably priced). It was really hot so the air-con was an essential! Great welcome from the agent too. We would love to return soon!

We spent the month of January 2015 in this very clean, bright, airy well appointed apartment and had a wonderful time. The description was accurate regarding the unit in most details. We are used to central heating and on the cooler days the zone heating was not adequate but with a purchased hot water bottle and extra blankets which were available we managed quite nicely. The sunny windows in the bedroom also helped. With only 3 English-language TV channels available, we really appreciated the selection of DVDs available in the unit.

Customer service was excellent from both the owner and her onsite manager, Loraine. The information books on tourist activities and how to operate appliances were most helpful and utilized frequently.

Although the winter is off-season and some activities and businesses were closed for the month or longer, we filled our days and really enjoyed the area. We took the local train along the coast visiting Faro, Fuzeta and Vila Real de Santo Antonio, enjoying them all. Also took Algarve Tours to Seville for the day which was also very good. We utilized the local Tourist Information office and the people there were very helpful. We attended a local concert series on Saturday evenings in local churches which gave us a feel for the local culture. Also enjoyed movie at the local community centre and a jazz concert. We enjoyed walking through Tavira along the river, its sights, and coffee and pastries at the local pastelerias.

We hope to return and would recommend this unit to friends and family.

Special interest holidays:

Many people come to the Eastern Algarve to bird watch as the Ria Formosa is the most important birding site in the Algarve. Covering 60km it comprises large areas of dunes and lagoons, channels and islands, saltpans, pools and river mouths. The diversity of habitat in the area means you can spot up to 50 species of birds in a morning from Greater Flamingoes to Eurasin spoonbills to Crested Coots.It is an area of great importance for a wide range of breeding, passage and wintering birds-hence it is a haven for the ornithologist.

There is an observatory located 7km north west of Tavira-Casa De Estudo Para Astronomia (CDEPA) was set up for astronomers and for families and friends to enjoy a visit to one of the best star sites in Europe. It offers a planetarium, Night Observations, Megalithic Astronomy, Introductory courses in Astronomy and Astrophotography. The nearest beach is the Ila de Tavira-you can walk from the apartment to the riverside boat stop in 15 mins and there take the ferry to the beach.The bus station which is a 5 min walk from the apartment runs a bus to Quatro Aguas(QA) where you can also catch the ferry. If you have a car you can drive and there is plenty of parking at QA or you could drive to Pedras del Rei and take the mini train across to the beach at Barilla. There are plenty of restaurants/toilets at both beaches.


Faro airport is 35km from Tavira-it is an easy drive via the A22 motorway and takes between 20-30 mins. If you are not hiring a car it is possible to arrange a private transfer costing approx 70euro return for 1- 4 people -ask for details. It is also possible to fly into Seville airport-from there the drive is 1½ hour all via motorway-it is nice to stay a night in Seville and see the sights and if you have kids visit the fantastic Isla Magica theme park which opens from 1100-2300 in high season.


From the apartment you can walk to the Centre of Tavira in 10 mins along the river Gilao.There are several small fishing villages close to Tavira town-about a ten minute drive away is is the lovely village of Santa Lucia-it is the centre of the octopus fishing industry as seen by the heaps of earthenware pots on the quayside. There are numerous fish restaurants where you can choose from the days catch. The village of Cabanas has a new promenade and a craft fair in August which is worth a visit.

Further Details:

Tavira town has many shops, restaurants and bars to choose from. There is a daily market selling fresh friut, vegetables, meat and fish. There are several supermarkets in the town including Lidl and Aldi. There are restaurants for all tastes and budgets. There is a mini train which gives a tour of the town and can help to get your bearings-it departs from the riverside near the roman bridge.To get a 360 degree view of Tavira you can visit the camera obscura which is located in a disused water tower in the centre of the town-not to be missed it gives a real time view of the town.

For those interested in history there is plenty to keep you busy with a walking tour of the town to see the Roman bridge, the castle and the numerous churches.

If you have children with you a visit to a waterpark is a must and there are several to choose from- Aqua Show, The Big One, Slide and Splash are a few examples-they are all accessed very easily via the A22 in about 30-45mins-it is also possible to take a day trip coach there from Tavira. Zoo Marine is also worth a visit with dolphin and seal shows as well as water rides and 3 swimming pools to cool off in.There is also a beautiful carousel and other fun rides.

Further afield going towards Spain you can visit Vila Real San Antonio-this is a thriving town with an architecturally impressive pedestrian centre laid out like Lisbon's Baixa district. From here you can take boat trips up the Guadiana River.It is the 2nd longest river in Europe at 778km.

The Spanish town of Ayamonte is only 10km away-it can be reached by ferry from Vila Real or via a bridge from Portugal. It has a wonderfully Spanish feel to it and there is a lovely old medieval quarter with narrow streets and cobbled plazas lined with trees, restaurants and bars. When you have finished shopping in the wonderful array of shops relax with a glass of wine and some tapas.5 mins drive from town is the Isla Canela beach popular with wind and kite surfers-it is accessed via a bridge from Ayamonte

A non refundable 25% deposit is payable at time of booking and the balance is required 6 weeks prior to arrival. A refundable damage deposit of 200 euro/ £170 is payable to our agent on arrival, with deductions made for any breakages. A cot and high chair can be supplied for €5/day.New for 2015 unlimited wifi included in prices above. The extra Z bed for a fifth person with sheets and towels is supplied free of charge.
For short stays as cleaning and laundry supplement of €70 applies.
Changeover Day:
We are very flexible with regard to changeover day but request that clients vacate the apartment before 10am so it can be made ready for following guests.If there is no one arriving that day it may be possible to have a late departure please enquire.

Notes on prices:
Prices are for the property per week in euros. Long term winter let €650/month for Nov, Dec, Jan, Feb and March applies to rentals of 4 weeks min and includes unlimited wifi and the final clean.Utilities are paid at the end of your stay when our manager reads the relevant meters and are charged as per the standard rates the utility companies are charging at the time.Cleaning and linen/towel change can be arranged for you with our manager or you can decide to take care of this yourselves and extra linens/towels will be at your disposal. A 25% deposit is required to secure the booking with the balance due 8 weeks before arrival. A refundable damage deposit of 200 euro/170 pounds sterling is payable on arrival and will be returned before you leave by our management team.

Please note there are steps within the complex and also a very long flight of steps involved in the walk to and from town (unless you take a taxi back! ) so this apartment is not suitable for renters with difficulties with steps.
